Materials and Manufacture4.1 Material:4.1.1 All materials used in the construction of these search-lights shall be of a quality suitable for the purpose intended andshall conform to the requirements of this specification.4.1.2 The searchlight shall
7、be constructed of brass, copper-alloy, an equivalent corrosion-resistant material, or a materialthat when tested in accordance with Practice B117for 200 h,does not show signs of pitting, cracking, or deterioration.4.1.3 Plastic, when used, shall be of a suitable thermoplasticor thermosetting materia
8、l so molded as to produce a dense solidstructure, uniform in texture, finish, and mechanical properties.5. Requirements Requirements5.1 The height of the searchlight from the base to the top ofthe light shall not exceed 19 in. (483 mm).5.2 The housing of the searchlight shall be capable of freemovem
9、ent of at least 60 above and 45 below the horizontal,and be able to rotate 360 in the horizontal plane. There shallbe a means provided to lock the searchlight in any desiredposition without the use of tools (vertically and horizontally).5.3 The searchlight shall be capable of illuminating a lightcol
10、ored object at night at 55 ft (180 m). The searchlight shallproject a beam of light of not less than 5.5 ft (18 m) in diameterat a distance of 55 ft from the light source. The edge of thebeam shall be a point where the intensity of the light is 10 %of the maximum intensity. The light source shall ha
11、ve acandlepower rating of no less than 350 000 cd.5.4 The searchlight shall be capable of being operated fornot less than3hofcontinuous use and6hofintermittent use.5.5 The lamp used in the searchlight shall be of theincandescent, quartz, or other type which would allow forinstant start. The lamps sh
12、all be rated for 12 V.5.6 Each searchlight shall be watertight. The searchlightshall show no leakage of water following the test methodprescribed in 7.1.5.7 Each searchlight shall be wired with a 6-ft (2-m) lengthof rubber jacketed hard service flexible cord, unless otherwisespecified in 8.3. The co
13、nductor size shall be no less than 16AWG. The cable entry into the searchlight shall be sealed witha watertight bushing and packing gland. A suitable clampingdevice shall be installed in the area where the cables enter thegland to prevent any force being exerted on the gland orconnections. The free

Workmanship, Finish, and Appearance6.1 Searchlights shall be of sturdy construction, and freefrom mechanical, electrical, or other imperfections or defectswhich materially affect appearance or which may af
18、fect quality,reliability, or serviceability.6.2 The finished searchlight shall not contain rough edges,burrs, or other disfigurations and shall be clean, free from rust,tool marks, and other injurious defects.7. Test Methods7.1 WatertightnessThe searchlight shall be submerged ina saltwater solution
19、(1.04 sp gr) to a depth of 3 ft (0.9 m) of60F (16C) for 2 h.The light will then be subjected to the testsof 7.2.1 and be in perfect working order.7.2 Environmental:7.2.1 Operational TestThe searchlight shall be operatedcontinuously for3hatrated voltage in an ambient temperatureof 77F (25C) and be op
20、erational after being subjected to thewatertightness test of 7.1. The searchlight shall then beoperated intermittently. The intermittent time periods shall be15 min “ON” and 5 min “OFF” for a total 6-h period. Thesetests shall be repeated three times.7.2.2 Impact:7.2.2.1 Test ConditionsThe searchlig
21、ht shall be placed ina cold chamber at 40 6 5F (40 6 3C) for 2 h. With thesearchlight stabilized at this temperature, it shall be immedi-ately subjected to the low- and high-impact tests specified in7.2.2.2 and 7.2.2.3. The point of impact shall be applied to theoutside of the case at a point midway
22、 between the ends of thecase at 4 points 90 apart and the back plate.7.2.2.2 Low ImpactThe searchlight shall be subjected to a12 in.lbf (1.3 J) impact using a 1-lb (0.5-kg) steel ball at eachof the points of impact specified in 7.2.2.1. The searchlightshall then be subjected to the watertightness te
23、st (see 7.1).There shall be no evidence of breakage from impact and noevidence of moisture shall be found in the case.7.2.2.3 High ImpactThe searchlight, after passing thelow-impact test, shall be again placed in the cold chamber at40 6 5F (40 6 3C) for 2 h and then immediatelysubjected to a 20 in.l
24、bf (2.3 J) impact using a 1-lb (0.5-kg)steel ball at each of the points of impact specified in 7.2.2.1.There shall be no evidence of damage to the case or the lens.7.3 Test for Light ProjectionThe beam spread of thesearchlight shall be shown to meet the calculations contained inthe IES Lighting Hand
25、book.4This test shall be conducted atrated voltage.7.4 Switch EnduranceThe contact switch mechanism ofthe searchlight shall be tested by operating the switch for25 000 continuous cycles. A cycle shall consist of movementsfrom “OFF” position through the full “ON” and “FLASHING”positions and back to “
26、OFF” position. The switch shall beoperated under normal electrical load conditions, and the lampand batteries shall be replaced as often as required to ensurethat the switch mechanism is operating under normal loadthroughout the 25 000 cycles. Burning out of bulbs andbatteries during the test shall
27、not constitute failure of this test.Failure of the switch to complete 25 000 cycles shall constitutefailure of this test.7.5 The searchlight, when mounted to a lifeboat, shall beable to withstand a vertical drop test of the lifeboat with forcesof 10 g and a side impact test of the lifeboat with forc
28、es of 20g.8. Packaging and Package Marking8.1 Product MarkingEach searchlight conforming to allthe requirements in this specification shall be marked with thename, brand or trademark of the manufacturer, this ASTMspecification number, and any other information as may bespecified in the contract or p
29、urchase order.8.2 PackagingUnless otherwise specified by the customerin the contract or purchase order, the searchlight shall bepackaged, packed, and marked in accordance with the manu-facturers commercial practice to ensure acceptance and safedelivery by the carrier for the mode of shipping and han
30、dling.8.3 Details pertaining to the cable, cable terminations, andvoltage should be provided by the procuring agency in thecontract or purchase order.9. Quality Assurance9.1 Responsibility for InspectionUnless otherwise speci-fied in the contract or purchase order, the producer is respon-sible for t
31、he performance of all inspection and requirements asspecified herein. Except as otherwise specified in the contractor purchase order, the producer may use his own or any otherfacilities suitable for the performance of the inspection require-ments specified herein. The purchaser reserves the right to
32、perform any of the inspections set forth in the specificationwhere such inspections are deemed necessary to assure thesearchlights conform to the prescribed requirements.9.2 The producer shall perform the necessary inspection andtests to assure that an S-4 inspection level, in accordance withMIL-STD
33、-105D, is provided. An Acceptable Quality Level(AQL) of 1 % defective for the operational test and the switchleakage test, and an AQL of 4 % for any of the otherrequirement or test specified shall be provided.
