3、cies of the U.S. Department of Defense.1. Scope Scope*1.1 This practice covers procedures for safe handling of solvent cements, primers, and cleaners used in joining thermoplasticpipe and fittings. The procedures are general ones and include safeguards against hazards of fire and precautions for pro

4、tection ofpersonnel from breathing of vapors and contact with skin or eyes.1.2 The word cleaner, when used in this practice, refers to chemical cleaners.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibilityof the user of t

8、ific to This Standard:3.2.1 cleaner, chemicalan organic solvent used to remove foreign matter from the surface of plastic pipe and fittings.3.2.2 primeran organic solvent,solvent or a blend of solvents, which enhances adhesion, applied to plastic pipe and fittingsprior to application of a solvent ce

9、ment.3.2.3 solvent cementan adhesive made by dissolving a plastic resin or compound in a suitable solvent or mixture of solvents.The solvent cement dissolves the surfaces of the pipe and fittings to form a bond between the mating surfaces provided the propercement is used for the particular material

10、s and proper techniques are followed.4. Safe Handling4.1 Anumber of the solvents contained in cements, primers, and cleaners are classified as airborne contaminants and flammableand combustible liquids. These products generally are composed of solvent blends which vary with manufacturers. Follow1 Th

16、 label or in the Material Safety Data Sheet available from the manufacturer.4.2 Vapors can pose serious safety hazards in the workplace. Unlike lighter-than-air gases (for example, helium, hydrogen,ammonia, and hot air), the heavier-than-air vapors found in Solvent Cements, Primers, and Cleaners don

17、t readily dissipate intothe atmosphere. These vapors will aggregate (collect) at the bottom of an enclosure (horizontal or vertical pipe) or along the floorof a room. To help mitigate this, some manufacturers allow the piping system to be filled with liquid after the initial set time hasexpired. Che

18、ck with specific cement manufacturer for their suggestions on how quickly a system can be filled with liquid tomitigate this potential hazard. Avoid prolonged breathing of solvent vapors. When pipe and fittings are being joined in partiallyenclosed areas, use a areas use a respirator approved for th

19、e organic vapors located on the safety data sheet; for more informationcontact National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) or, use a ventilating device in such a manner as to maintaina safe level of vapor concentration with respect to toxicity4, 5 and flammability6 in the breathing

20、 area. Select ventilating devicesand locate them so as not to provide a source of ignition to flammable vapor mixtures.4.3 Keep cements, primers, and cleaners away from all sources of ignition, heat, sparks, and open flame.6 Do not smoke or useE-cigarette devices in vicinity of these products while

21、they are being applied and for several hours after being applied.4.4 Keep containers of cements, primers, and cleaners tightly closed except when the product is being used.Avoid use of pliersfor opening or closing container, as they can easily damage the lid, preventing tight sealing upon closing. C

22、onsult manufacturerfor recommendations on proper type of can opening/closing device. The container type shall be in accordance with CFR Title 49.Container labeling shall conform with the requirements of the Federal Hazardous Substance Act and OSHA HazardCommunication Act.4.5 Dispose Follow local and

23、 state recommendations when disposing of all rags and other materials used for mopping up spillsthat were stored in an outdoor safety waste receptacle. Empty the receptacle daily with proper consideration for its flammablehazard.4.6 Most of the solvents used in pipe cements, primers, and cleaners ca

24、n be considered eye irritants and contact with the eyeshould be avoided as it may cause eye injury. Proper eye protection and the use of chemical goggles or face shields is advisablewhere the possibility of splashing exists in handling these products. In case of eye contact, flush with plenty of wat

25、er for 15 minand call a physician immediately.4.7 Avoid contact with the eyes and skin. Wear proper PPE (personal protection equipment) like safety glasses and solventresistant gloves impervious to and unaffected by the solvents when contact with the skin is likely. Application of theDo not applypri

26、mers, cleaners, or solvent cements with rags and bare hands is not recommended. Brushes, daubers, andhands. Swabs, brushes,rollrs, daubers, or other suitable applicators can be used effectively for applying these products, thus avoiding skin contact.products. Dispose of used applicators in the same

27、manner as the rags (see 4.5). In the event of contact, remove contaminatedclothing immediately and thoroughly wash skin with soap and water. Wash contaminated clothing before wearing them again.5.
