8、ications, recommended practices, methods, classifications, and guides) of the AmericanWelding Society (AWS) are voluntary consensus standards that have been developed in accordance with the rules of theAmerican National Standards Institute (ANSI). When AWS American National Standards are either inco

9、rporated in, ormade part of, documents that are included in federal or state laws and regulations, or the regulations of other govern-mental bodies, their provisions carry the full legal authority of the statute. In such cases, any changes in those AWSstandards must be approved by the governmental b

10、ody having statutory jurisdiction before they can become a part ofthose laws and regulations. In all cases, these standards carry the full legal authority of the contract or other documentthat invokes the AWS standards. Where this contractual relationship exists, changes in or deviations from requir

Scope1.1 This specification prescribes requirements for stan-dard sizes and packages of welding filler metals and theirphysical attributes, such as product appearance andidentification.1.2 This specification applies to

35、 covered electrodes withboth solid and tubular core wires; bare solid and tubularwires on spools, coils, and drums, or in straight lengths;and solid and sintered strip electrodes. It applies to allfusion welding processes, except brazing, braze welding,and thermal spraying, or granular metallic or m

36、ineralproducts, such as submerged arc fluxes, or other suchproducts used in fusion welding processes.1.3 Safety and health issues and concerns are beyond thescope of this standard and are, therefore, not fullyaddressed herein. Safety and health information is avail-able from other sources, including

37、, but not limited to,ANSI Z49.1, Safety in Welding, Cutting, and AlliedProcesses, and applicable federal and state regulations.1.4 This specification makes use of both U.S. CustomaryUnits and the International System of Units (SI). 41、ths. Standard sizes (diam-eter of the core wire) and lengths of electrodes are shownin Table 1.3.1.1 The diameter of the core wire shall not varymore than 0.002 in 0.05 mm from the diameterspecified. The length shall not vary more than 1/4 in10 mm from that specified.3.2 Core Wire and Covering. The

42、core wire and cover-ing shall be free of defects that would interfere with theuniform deposition of the electrode. The core and cover-ing shall be concentric to the extent that the maximumcore-plus-one-covering dimension shall not exceed theminimum core-plus-one-covering dimension by more than:1. 7%

43、 of the mean dimension in sizes of 3/32 in2.5 mm and smaller,2. 5% of the mean dimension in sizes larger than3/32 in 2.5 mm and smaller than 3/16 in 5 mm, and3. 4% of the mean dimension in sizes 3/16 in 5 mmand larger.Concentricity may be measured by any suitable means.2ISO standards are published b

45、ering) for a distance of not less than 1/2 in12 mm nor more than 1-1/4 in 30 mm for electrodes5/32 in 4.0 mm and smaller, and not less than 3/4 in20 mm nor more than 1-1/2 in 40 mm for electrodes3/16 in 5 mm and larger, to provide for electricalcontact with the electrode holder.3.3.2 The arc end of

46、each electrode shall be suffi-ciently conductive, and the covering sufficiently tapered,to permit easy striking of the arc. The length of the con-ductive portion (measured from the end of the core wireto the location where the full cross section of the cover-ing is obtained) shall not exceed 1/8 in

47、3 mm or thediameter of the core wire, whichever is less. Electrodeswith chipped coverings near the arc end, baring the corewire no more than the lesser of 1/4 in 6 mm or twice thediameter of the core wire, meet the requirements of thisspecification provided no chip uncovers more than 50%of the circu

48、mference of the core.3.4 Electrode Identification. All electrodes shall beidentified as follows:3.4.1 At least one imprint of the electrode designation(classification plus any optional designators) shall beapplied to the electrode covering starting within 2-1/2 in65 mm of the grip end of the electro

49、de. The prefix letterE in the classification may be omitted from the imprint.3.4.2 The numbers and letters of the imprint shall beof bold block type of a size large enough to be legible.3.4.3 The ink used for imprinting shall provide suffi-cient contrast with the electrode covering so that, in nor-mal use, the numbers and letters are legible both beforeand after welding.3.4.4 When an electrode is classified as meeting therequirements of A5.X and A5.XM, both electrode desig-nations shall be applied.3.4.5 If allowed by the specific A5 spe
