7、mmittee. It is one of a series of methods for determination of gelation time of resins, the others being as follows. It should be noted that BS4584 “Metal-clad base materials for printed circuits” Part11 “Bonding sheet material for use in the fabrication of multi-layer printed boards: EP-GC-11” also
8、 includes a method for testing resins used for laminates, etc. This method describes a procedure for determining the gelation time of a polyester system when maintained at a specified temperature. The method covers the requirements of method111C of BS2782:1970 which is therefore being withdrawn. WAR
9、NING NOTE. This method does not necessarily detail all precautions necessary to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act1974. Attention should be paid to any appropriate safety precautions, and the method should be operated only by trained personnel. 1 Scope This method descri
10、bes a procedure for determining the gelation time of a catalysed polyester system when maintained at a specified temperature. 2 References The following standards publications are referred to in this method. BS572, Interchangeable conical ground glass joints. BS3787, Glass condensers with standard j
11、oints. 3 Principle The time is measured for gelation of a mixture of resin and catalyst maintained nominally at a temperature of82 C or117 C. 4 Reagents The following reagents are required. All reagents used (except where stated) shall be of analytical quality. 4.1 Butan-1-ol, b.p.116 C to118 C. 4.2
12、 Propan-2-ol, b.p.82.4 C. 4.3 Liquid paraffin, B P quality. 5 Apparatus The following apparatus is required. 5.1 Flask,150ml, with round bottom fitted with a34/35conical joint complying with the requirements of BS572. 5.2 Heating bath or mantle 5.3 Adaptor, with34/35conical joint and side neck with1
13、9/26conical joint complying with the requirements of BS572. 5.4 Liebig condenser, of nominal length300mm, with conical joint. The condenser shall comply with the requirements of BS3787 and the conical joint shall comply with the requirements for joint19/26 of BS572. 5.5 Test tubes, of heat resistant
14、 glass,150mm long and25mm in diameter and150mm long and19mm in diameter. 5.6 Glass stirring rod,7mm in diameter. 5.7 Timing device, accurate to1s or less. 6 Test temperature The test temperature shall be preferably81 C to82.5 C or116 C to118 C as appropriate, but other test temperatures may be used
15、depending on the choice of a suitable reagent used in the flask. NOTEThe temperature used in method111C of BS2782:1970 was81 C to82.5 C. 7 Procedure Assemble the apparatus as shown in Figure 1. Place6g to7g of the liquid paraffin in the test tube (B) and50ml of the propan-2-ol or butan-1-ol, as appr
16、opriate, in the flask (A) and raise the alcohol to boiling point by means of a heating bath or mantle, so that the test tube (B) is maintained at a temperature of81 C to82.5 C (using propan-2-ol) or116 C to118 C (using butan-1-ol). 18、99 To100g of the polyester resin add to an accuracy of2.5% the amount of catalyst specified by the resin manufacturer and following the manufacturers instructions. Then pour a25mm deep layer of the resin mixture into test tube (C) and immediately reassemble the apparatus. Start the timing device imm
19、ediately the test tube (C) is immersed in the liquid paraffin. Place the stirring rod in the resin mixture and stir it by moving the rod one complete revolution of the diameter of the tube (C) about every15s until gelation occurs. Stop the timing device and note the time for gelation. Make a second
20、determination using fresh test portions from the same samples of components of the resin system. 8 Expression of results Calculate the mean of the two results and report this mean as the gelation time expressed in minutes. 9 Test report The test report shall include the following particulars. a) A c
21、omplete identification of the material tested, including type, source, manufacturers code number and previous history. b) A reference to the British Standard method i.e.BS2782:Method835B:1980. c) The test temperature. d) The result of the test and, if required, the individual results.
