It supersedes BS3488:1962 from which it differs in that requirements are a
、ligned more closely with those of the British Pharmacopoeia and that the requirement for freedom from ammonia and ammonium compounds has been deleted. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their corre
、ct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pagesi andii, pages1 and2, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright
、 date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS3488:1987 BSI 12-1999 1 1 Scope This BritishStandard specifies requirements for anhydrous lanolin suitable for technical uses, for example as an easily removable rust preventati
、ve or protective film agent. It is not applicable to lanolin for medical or cosmetic use. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Description The material shall consist of purified recovered wool fat. It shall be of uniform consistency,
、free from visible impurities and have the characteristic odour and colour of lanolin. 3 Acid value The acid value, when determined by method2 of BS684-2.10:1988, shall be not higher than1.5. 4 Saponification value The saponification value, when determined by the method described in BS684-2.6, shall
、be not lower than90 and not higher than106. 5 Iodine value The iodine value, when determined by the method described in BS684-2.13 using a test portion of1g, shall be not lower than17 and not higher than35. 6 Moisture and other volatile matter The moisture and other volatile matter content, when det
、ermined by method A of BS684-1.10:1982, shall not exceed0.3%(m/m). 7 Melting point The melting point, when determined as the drop point by method1 of BS684-1.4:1976, shall be not lower than38 C and not higher than44 C. The cap shall be filled by the following method. Melt the wool fat on a water-bat
、h, cool to about50 C, pour into the cup and allow to stand for24h at15 C to20 C. 8 Ash The ash, when determined by the method described in BS684-2.2, shall not exceed0.15%(m/m). 9 Matter soluble in water The content of matter soluble in water, when determined by the method described in Appendix A, s
、hall not exceed0.1%(m/m). 10 pH value of aqueous extract The pH value of an aqueous extract, when determined by the method described in Appendix B, shall be not lower than5.0 and not higher than8.0. 11 Sulphur The material, when tested by the method described in Appendix C, shall cause no pitting or
、 etching and no more than slight discoloration of the copper strip.BS3488:1987 2 BSI 12-1999 Appendix A Determination of matter soluble in water A.1 Procedure Boil20g of the sample for5min with approximately200mL of neutral distilled water. Cool the mixture to room temperature and filter through a w
、ater-wetted filter paper into a250mL one-mark volumetric flask. Wash the filter with small quantities of the neutral distilled water adding the washings to the filtrate and, if necessary, filter again. Dilute the filtrate to the mark. Transfer a50mL portion of the filtrate to a glass or platinum dis
、h, weighed to the nearest0.1mg, evaporate to dryness on a steam bath and dry for1h in an oven maintained at105 1 C. A.2 Expression of results The content of matter soluble in water, expressed as a percentage by mass, is given by the expression 25M where M is the mass of residue (ing). Appendix B Det
、ermination of pH value of aqueous extract Boil20g of the sample for5min with200mL of recently boiled distilled water in a500mL beaker. Cool the mixture to room temperature and allow to stand. When the liquid is clear, decant about70mL of the liquor into a100mL beaker. Determine the pH value of the d
、ecanted liquor electrometrically using a pH meter. Appendix C Detection of sulphur C.1 Reagents C.1.1 Strips of sheet copper, 755mm long by10 2mm wide complying with BS2870 or BS4608. C.1.2 Silicon carbide powder C.1.3 Acetone C.1.4 White spirit, complying with BS245. C.2 Preparation of strips If th
、e copper strips(C.1.1) do not have a uniform finish, free from defects, polish them mechanically on both sides to obtain a uniform finish, free from defects. Clean and polish the strips with a pad of cotton wool and the silicon carbide powder(C.1.2) and then with successive pads of cotton wool until
、 a fresh pad remains unsoiled after use. Wash the strips with the acetone(C.1.3) and allow to dry. Use clean metal forceps for all further handling of the strips. C.3 Procedure Dissolve20g of the sample in100mL of the white spirit(C.1.4). Immerse a strip of copper, prepared as inC.2, to a depth of50
、mm in the solution contained in a glass test tube. Close the test tube with a vented cork and allow to stand in a vertical position at room temperature. Remove the strip after24h, wash with white spirit and compare with similar strips of freshly cleaned and polished copper.BS3488:1987 BSI 12-1999 Pu
