、cket screws and wrench keys. BS 3643, ISO metric screw threads. BS 4168, Hexagon socket screws and wrench keys. Metric series. This standard is based on proposals made by the Machine Tool Trades Association and is one of a series dealing with components of machine tools. Others in this series are: T
、he locknuts specified in this standard are those secured by a socket set screw. Double locknuts and lock washers are not included in this specification. The slots of both the millimetre and inch series of locknuts are suitable for use with hook spanners conforming to BS2090 1) . That standard gives
、a series of hook spanner blanks and dimensions of hook spanners which may be made from them for different sizes of nut. Column16 ofTable 1 andTable 2 of this standard gives the number of the hook spanner blank appropriate to each size of locknut; a hook spanner made from this blank to dimensions giv

A marking requirement has been included in the standard so that a standard locknut may be distinguished from a special and its size readily identified. A British Standard does not purport to include all th

Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pagesi andii, p

BS4185-1:1967 BSI 03-2000 1 1 Scope This standard relates to separate millimetre and inch series of locknuts, “C” type, s
、ocket set screw locking, for use on machine tools and their auxiliary equipment. NOTE“C” type locknuts are those for use with a hook spanner 2)(“C” spanner). The millimetre series is suitable for threaded components of diameter10125mm and the inch series for threaded components of diameter 1 / 2 5in
、. NOTEAll the millimetre dimensions in this specification relate to the millimetre series and all the inch dimensions to the inch series. 2 Materials The body of the locknut shall be manufactured of steel070M55 (R) conforming to BS970-1 3)or from steel having equivalent mechanical properties. The pa
、d under the socket set screw shall be manufactured of material selected by the manufacturer of the locknut as suitable for its purpose. It shall be softer than the socket set screw and the threaded member with which the locknut is to be used. Any pellet insert in the socket set screw shall be manufa
、ctured of material selected by the manufacturer of the socket set screw as suitable for its purpose. 3 Constructional requirements 3.1 Dimensions. Locknuts of the millimetre series shall conform to the dimensions given inFigure 1 andTable 1 and those of the inch series to those inFigure 1 andTable 2
、. When plating is specified, the locknut shall conform, after plating, to the dimensions given in this standard. 3.2 Locknut body. The tolerance on the angular position of each slot with respect to the thread J shall be 1 . The tolerance on the squareness 4)of the abutment face of the locknut (FaceX
、, Figure 1) with respect to its thread A shall be as follows: 1) Millimetre series 2) Inch series The screw thread of the bore of the millimetre series of locknuts shall conform to BS3643 5)and shall be Class6H; that of the inch series shall conform to BS1580 6)and be Class2B. The thread of the hole
、 for the locking screw shall conform to BS3643 5)and shall be Class6H (millimetre series) or to BS1580 6) and be Class2B (inch series). 3.3 Locking screw. The locking screw shall be a hexagon socket set screw with cup point. For the millimetre series, it shall conform to BS4168 7) , Class6g; for the
、 inch series it shall conform to BS2470 8)(Unified fine thread). The locking screw shall be designed to be self-locking and to be unaffected by vibration. 3.4 Pad. The nominal dimensions of the pad to be interposed between the socket set screw and the thread carrying the locknut are given in Columns
、14 and15 ofTable 1 andTable 2 but the actual dimensions shall be such that, to prevent loss of the pad before assembly of the locknut on a shaft, the pad is a press fit in the body of the locknut. 4 Finish The abutment face of the locknut (FaceX, Figure 1) shall have a surface texture 9)of0.4m CLA (
、millimetre series) or 16CLA (inch series). The remainder of the locknut shall have a surface texture of3.2mCLA (millimetre series) or125CLA (inch series). The locknut shall be sound and free from burrs, sharp edges and other defects. 2) BS2090, “Hook spanners, peg spanners, coupling wrenches and the
