、tors for polarization maintaining fibre 1 Scope This part of IEC 61300 provides a method to measure the keying accuracy of a polarization maintaining fibre connector. 2 General description Optical fibre connectors for polarization maintaining fibre (PMF) shall align the birefringence axes of the two
、 mating fibres. The keying accuracy of PM connector plugs should be specified to realize PMF connection with high extinction ratio propagation (see annex A). The extinction ratio of PMF itself is generally over 40 dB for fibres several metres in length. The extinction ratio achieved with the PMF con
、nectors is lower than that due to the PM fibre alone because of the following reasons: a) in the termination: after the PM fibre has been terminated into the ferrule, some residual stress causes the extinction ratio to decrease; b) angular misalignment of the axes of birefringence: the angular misal
、ignment of the polarization axes at the connection point affects the extinction ratio. To evaluate the influence of the second factor of the misalignment angle of the polarization axes at the connection point, measurement of the keying accuracy and the extinction ratio is very important (see annex B
、). 3 Apparatus The apparatus and arrangement necessary to make this measurement is shown in Figure 1. The material needed consists of the following: a) an optical source S with known characteristics (wavelength, spectral width, etc.) and a compatible detector D. A Fabry-Perot laser or low-coherence
、source (for example SLD) is suitable for this measurement; b) an in-line polarization assembly including a polarizer P1,a quarter-wave retardation plate and a polarizer P2 in an expanded beam system formed by two lenses L1 and L2. The quarter-wave plate converts the state of polarization SOP from li
、near to circular and the polarizer converts the SOP from circular to linear. With this combination of elements, linearly polarized light with the same optical power will be produced regardless of the plane of polarization. NOTE In the case of an unpolarized light source such as an LED, P1 and the qu

The extinction ratio of the test patch cord is given by Dmax Dmin(dB). The angle of polarization axis of each plug of t
、he test patch cord is the angle of the polarizer P2 and the analyzer A, respectively. f) Keying accuracy is obtained as a mismatch angle between the obtained polarization axis and the key groove direction of the receptacle for each plug end as shown in Figure 3. Figure 1 shows the relationship between the geometrical axis of PM fibre and the plug key. The sl
、ow axis of the fibre structure is usually aligned to the plug key direction as shown in Figure A.111). For some PM fibres, it is easier to observe the geometrical axis by structure than to locate the polarization axis by the procedure in the main document. Fast axis Slow axis PM Structure PM fibre F

EN 61300-3-24:2007 8 Annex B (informative) Calculated extinction ratio versus measured values The extinction ratio of PMF itself is generally over 40 dB for several metres in l
、ength. The extinction ratios of the PMF connectors are lower than the initial value for the following reasons. a) Termination After PM fibre has been glued to the ferrule, some residual stress causes the extinction ratio to decrease. A typical patch cord with PMF has an extinction ratio between 25 d
、B and 35 dB. If two PMF patch cords are connected, the minimum total extinction ratio will be ERt min= 10 log (10ER1/10+ 10ER2/10)(B.1)where ER1and ER2are the extinction ratios in decibels of each PMF patch cord 1. The total extinction ratio caused by termination ERtcannot determine a fixed value be
、cause ERtvaries from ER1to ERt min along the fibre length. b) Misalignment angle of the axes of birefringence The misalignment angle of polarization axes at the connection point affects the extinction ratio. The minimum total extinction ratio caused by the misalignment angle is given by ERm min= 10
、log (tan2 )(B.2)where is the misalignment angle between two axes of birefringence 2. The total extinction ratio caused by angular misalignment ERmalso cannot determine a fixed value because ERmvaries from ER1to ERm minalong the length of the fibre. The total extinction ratio of two connected patch c

ERmin= 10 log (10ERt min/10+ 10ERm min/10)(B.3)Figure B.1 shows the calculated extinction ratio of these samples using equation (B.3) versus measured extinction ratio for each pair of patch cords. Figure B.1 indicates that the calculated extinction ratio using equati
、on (B.3) corresponds to the minimum values for random concatenation of PMF connectors. The total extinction ratio can also be expressed by equation (B.4).
