2、-COPPER- ESB-M1P17-A NICKEL-STEEL PLATING, CHROMIUM-DECORATIVE EXTERIOR-COPPER- ESB-M1P18-A DUAL-NICKEL-STEEL 1. SCOPE These specifications define the performance requirements for interior and exterior chromium plating systems on steel substrates. 2. APPLICATION These specifications were released or

3、iginally for coating where a bright or low gloss decorative and/or protective metallic finish is required on steel and/or iron surfaces. Unless otherwise specified on the engineering drawing, all parts shall be finished with a final coating of chromium. When nickel finish is desired, the engineering

4、 drawing shall specify nickel plate, e.g. nickel plate ESB-M1P17, omit chromium plating. 3. REQUIREMENTS Material specification requirements are to be used for initial qualification of materials. 3.1 STANDARD REQUIREMENTS FOR PRODUCTION MATERIALS Material suppliers and part producers must conform to

5、 the Companys Standard Requirements For Production Materials (WSS-M99P1111-A). 3.2 APPEARANCE All parts shall have the finish specified on the engineering drawing. The plated parts shall be free from surface imperfections such as rough or orange peel conditions, crazing, cold shuts, pits, slivers, d

6、ullness, stains, discoloration, breaks in the plate, and wheel marks or buff lines to the extent required specifications for the visual inspection of appearance items established by Product Engineering. Low gloss parts shall match the approved Styling master sample for appearance. 3.2.1 Buffing of C

7、hromium Plating Because of the potential adverse effect on corrosion resistance, buffing of final chromium plating on exterior parts is not permitted. Brushing or other approved mechanical treatments on nickel coating are permitted provided that minimum plating thickness requirements are met after t

8、reatment and minimum chromium porosity is maintained for ESB-M1P18-A, option 2, para 3.4.3. 9、how no separation between layers of plate. 3.3.1 Sawing Position the part in a vise or holding fixture so that the significant plated surface is perpendicular to the saw blade and the cutting motion of the blade is in a direction which tends to pull the plating away from the base metal. 3.3.2 Bendin

10、g Any section of the part containing a significant plated surface shall be positioned in a vise or holding fixture and subjected to repeated bending until fracture of the section. 3.4 PLATING THICKNESS Minimum plating thickness requirements for significant surfaces are shown in para 3.4.3. 3.4.1 Sig

11、nificant surfaces All surfaces visible on a part as assembled in a vehicle or surface which can be the source of corrosion products visible on an assembled vehicle are significant surfaces. Except as noted on the engineering drawing, all significant surfaces shall meet the corrosion and plate thickn

12、ess requirements, as detailed in para 3.4.3. Threads shall be completely plated, but shall not be considered as significant surfaces, unless so indicated on the engineering drawing. Rear of bumpers shall not be considered significant surfaces, unless so designated on engineering drawing. 3.4.2 Plati

13、ng Thickness Measurement (ASTM B 487) The optical measurement of copper and nickel deposits on significant surfaces shall be considered the standard thickness test method. The chromium plate thickness on significant surfaces shall be checked by the spot test as described in ASTM B 556 or by the elec

14、tronic deplating test, ASTM B 504, Determination of Thickness of Chromium Plate. In case of differences, ASTM B 504 shall be the umpire method. 17、 inorganic particles, insoluble in the plating bath, which are co-deposited with the nickel, or soluble organic addition agents which are co-deposited with the nickel or mechanically applied low gloss treatment of the bright nickel (i.e., brushed or glass bead blasted). 18、micrometers in the strike may be replaced with nickel provided parts meet all other requirements of this specification. (e) Initial copper plate 7.6 micrometers in the strike may be replaced with semi-bright nickel provided parts meet all other requirements of this specification. (f) The minimum chr

19、omium thickness allowed in the lowest current density areas particularly as related to bumpers is 0.13 micrometers. 20、l bright nickel which contains submicroscopic non-metallic particles which produces a microporous chromium deposit. (h) Mechanical Process: Impingement of the parts surface after chromium plating with sized particles producing a microporous chromium deposit. (i) Option 1 not applicable to new drawin

21、gs. 3.5 MICROPOROSITY, min 10000 pores/cm2(FLTM BQ 103-06) (Note: Applies only to 1P18-A Options 2 and 3) 3.6 CORRODKOTE TEST (FLTM BQ 004-01, for the time required see para 3.4.3) . Duplex nickel plated parts shall not have the surface pit corrosion included in the rating of the percent of corrosio

22、n. . Failure is to be noted for surface pitting corrosion if any grid area contains more than 10 spots 1.22 mm in diameter or larger. . Any corrosion pit larger than 1.6 mm shall be considered failure of the part. . Failure is to be noted as more than 2.0% corrosion of the entire significant surface

23、. . 15% or more corrosion in a grid section containing 100 6.4 x 6.4 mm spaces placed anywhere on the significant surface shall also constitute failure. 3.6.1 Surface Finish When low gloss finish is specified for glare reduction surfaces, the specular gloss of the surface shall not exceed the requir

24、ement of specification ESB-M25P2-A for the part in question. 3.7 CLEANING PRIOR TO ELECTROPLATING Steel parts containing 0.35% carbon or more at the surface, or heat treated to Rockwell C 30 or higher, shall be cleaned using the principles defined in ASTM B 242, “Preparation of High Carbon Steel for

25、 Electroplating.“ Steels containing less than 0.35% carbon at the surface, or lower than Rockwell C 30 in hardness, shall be cleaned using principles defined in ASTM B 183, “Preparation of Low Carbon Steel for Electroplating.“ ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION ESB-M1P17-A ESB-M1P18-A Printed copies

26、 are uncontrolled Copyright 2006, Ford Global Technologies, LLC Page 5 of 5 3.8 BRITTLENESS OF PLATED PARTS Parts shall be free from the detrimental effects of hydrogen embrittlement or other factors which result in part brittleness. All heat treating operations, including tempering after quenching

27、or stress relief after cold forming, shall be completed prior to plating. Electroplated steel parts containing 0.35% carbon or more at the surface, or heat treated to Rockwell C 30 or higher, or highly stressed cold worked parts, shall be heated within 1 h maximum after electroplating to a temperatu

28、re of 205 C, for 4 h at heat. Higher temperatures and/or longer times may be used if necessary to avoid any detrimental effects of hydrogen embrittlement. Hardened parts which have been tempered at less than 205 C shall be heated within 1 h maximum after electroplating to a temperature of 150 C for

29、8 h at heat, or longer if necessary. 4. GENERAL INFORMATION The information given below is provided for clarification and assistance in meeting the requirements of these specifications. 4.1 METHOD OF PLATING 4.1.1 Copper, Nickel, Chromium or Nickel, Chromium Plating These specifications are not intended to limit in any way the formula or procedure of plating. Any process resulting in a satisfactory adherent plate meeting the requirements of this specification will be approved.
