、D FOR NEW DESIGN 1. SCOPE: This specification was released originally to define the paintability requirements for sheet metal used on exposed automotive body parts. 2. APPLICATION: This specification defines the paintability requirements for the exposed side of the following types of sheet metal: .

、Uncoated cold rolled and HSLA steel . One and two sided zinc and zinc alloy coated steel . Aluminum sheet 3. REQUIREMENTS: 3.1 STATISTICAL PROCESS Suppliers must conform to the requirements of Ford Quality System Standard Q-101. A mutually acceptable Control Plan as described therein is required for

、 material/source approval. Appropriate statistical tools must be used to analyze process/product data so that variation in the final product is continuously reduced. 3.2 SURFACE APPEARANCE 3.2.1 The uncoated and coated surfaces shall be free from rust, staining, or discoloration of any kind. 3.3 SUR

、FACE CLEANLINESS 3.3.1 The uncoated and coated surfaces shall not have any drawing oils, lubricants, or rust preventative materials applied which are not approved by the B&A - Quality Control Office. 3.3.2 Carbonaceous Material 7 mg/m2 FLTM BZ 2-3, Method “A“ (required for uncoated crs surfaces only

、) The sampling frequency for the above requirement shall be determined by the B&A Quality Control Office. Test samples for all evaluations shall be taken as indicated in Illustration A. 8、 Surtronic 3P or equivalent) Each of the six pairs of average (Ra) surface roughness and peak count (PC) measurements of the metal surface prior to painting, shall lie in the region labeled “SATISFACTORY“ in Fig. 1. This region is bounded by a line expressed by the following relation: PC = Ra x 197.

、4 - 178.7 Where PC = Peak count (peaks per cm) measured at threshold of 1.3 micrometre Ra = Roughness average (micrometre) The sampling frequency for the above requirement shall be determined by the B&A Quality Control Office. The supplier shall record the Theoretical Distinctness of Image (TDOI) as

、 expressed by the following relation: TDOI = 98.4 - (14.6 x Ra) + (0.075 x PC) Note: It is recognized that forming operations may alter surface texture and thus, may produce surfaces which do not conform to this requirement even though the as-received surface conformed. 3.5 PAINTABILITY This paragra

、ph defines the requirements for the paintability tests which are required for initial approval or requalification purposes. All requirements contained in para 3.5 shall be performed on five (5) separate coils of steel with head and tail samples from each coil. This is as defined by the Q-101 Manual,

、 Process Potential Studies. Any deviation from this requirement must be approved by Body and Chassis Engineering. The requirements in this paragraph can be performed by the sources listed in para 5.3 as a service to those without the required preparation or testing facilities. ENGINEERING MATERIAL S

、rocoat (HBEC) Primer/Enamel System Panels which have been phosphate coated per 3.5.1.1 shall be primed using the currently released High Build Cathodic Electrocoat Primer to a film thickness of 30 micrometre. The panels shall be cured for 10 minutes at 182 +/- 2 C metal temperature or as recommended

、 by the supplier. Panels which have been primed per above shall be top coated with white enamel using the currently released High Solids Enamel to a film thickness of 42 +/- 4 micrometre. The panels shall be cured for 17 minutes at 129 +/- 2 C ambient or as recommended by the supplier. Suitable labo

、ratory test panels shall be processed concurrently as controls (Reference Para 5.2). Panels shall be aged 72 h at 23 +/- 2 C or 16 h at 45 +/- 2 C before testing. 3.5.2 Resistance Requirements Test panels prepared as outlined by para 3.5.1 shall provide acceptable performance as defined by the follo

(Grade 2) Panels shall be prepared in accordance with para 3.5.1 except use black enamel. There shall be no greater loss of adhesion

、 than grade 2, when tested as in para 3.5.2.1 within one half hour after 120 h exposure in 38 +/- 2 C at 100 % relative humidity.
