、used to determine the anti - wear properties of lubricating fluids. Apparatus Required Shell 4-ball Wear Tester Source: Precision Scientific Co. Chicago, Illinois or other ac ceptable source. Balls 1/2 inch diameter, steel. Hardness, Rockwell C64. Microscope With grid measuring in fractions of a mil

、limeter. Timing Device Stopwatch, clock, watch or other. Solvents Benzol or naphtha. Note: No chlorinated solvents should be used as a surface film may be formed yielding erroneous results. Temperature Controller Limits of Variables 1. Load: 40 kilograms, max 2. Temperature: 0 to 300 F 3. Speeds: 60

、0, 1200, 1800 rpm 4. Time: Indefinite The above variables are to be sp ecified by the Ford specification for the lubricant. 5、 material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/ - 2 C and 50 +/ - 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h pri or to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure 1. The specified speed for the test is obtained by placing the belt in the proper pull

、ey of the three -step arrangement. 2. The ball pot assembly, four balls and spi ndle and chuck assembly are cleaned thoroughly in benzol or naphtha. 3. One ball is inserted into the spindle and chuck assembly, care being taken to avoid fingerprints and the assembly is inserted in the headstock of th

、e machine. 4. The other three ball s are placed in the ball pot assembly, again avoiding fingerprints and the assembly is inserted in the headstock of the machine. 5. Ten milliliters of the fluid to be tested is placed in the ball pot assembly. Ten milliliters brings the level to the top of the ball

、 holding ring. 6. The locking cover is screwed on tightly to hold the balls securely in place. Note: The ball pot assembly is pictured in the figure. 7. The ball pot assembly is placed on the heater assembly, being sure that the iron and cons tantan markings of the two pieces match, as the temperatu

、re controller will not operate if this is not done. 8. The ball pot assembly and the heater assembly are lifted as one unit to their position on the machine (that is, so that the one ball in the spi ndle and chuck assembly is nested in the three balls of the ball pot assembly) and the ring assembly

、is slipped underneath the heater assembly. The complete group is set in place on the bearing housing assembly. Note: Care must be exercised so that the b alls are not bumped together. 9. The specified load is applied, again being very careful to avoid sudden bumping of the balls together. 10. The me

、rcury is raised into contact with the contacts on the heater assembly and locked in place with the locking n ut. 11. The temperature control is adjusted to the specified temperature and the heater switch is turned on. FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD BJ 016-01 Page 3 of 4 Copyright 2000, Ford Global Tech

、nol ogies, Inc. 12. When the specified temperature has been reached, the motor switch is turned on and the time is noted. 13. When the specified time for test h as elapsed, the machine is shut off, the heater is shut off, the mercury is lowered, the load is removed and the ball pot assembly is remov

、ed. The balls are washed in the ball pot assembly. 14. The ball pot is placed on the four - ball microscope and the w ear scar on one ball is brought into focus. 15. The width and height of the scar are measured in millimeters, using the grid in the eyepiece of the microscope. The other balls are ro

、tated into position and similarly measured. 16. The six dimensions are averaged and this average is reported as the result of the test. Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities .
