Clean the jars, lids (using laboratory washing machines) and seals (hand or machine wash) before each use. They must be clean and odorless. 2. A blank test

The jars containing the specimen(s) (or blank) should be conditioned and assessed per Table 2 below. TABLE 2: Summary of Test Conditions Use a separate specimen and jar for each

Evaluating the Odor: The assessors should be selected from staff who do not work in the production facility. Heavy smoke

28、rs, users of strong perfumes, or people with sinus problems are not suitable. All assessors must be aware of any risk assessment documents and Toxicology reports of all submitted components, which should be readily available, if requested. Acceptance tests shall be made by a minimum of five assessor

29、s. If the rating of individual tests differs by more than two points, three additional assessors shall be used to retest the sample. The test must be conducted in an environment free from drafts and contaminant odors. FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD BO 131-03 Copyright 2014, Ford Global Technologies, LL

30、C Page 5 of 7 The lid should be removed and the assessors nose should be positioned about 5 cm over the edge of the jar. The air from the jar should be wafted towards the assessors nose. The assessor should slowly inhale through the nose. The lid should not be off the jar longer than 5 seconds. Reco

31、rd the appropriate rating (refer to “Rating Scale“). If the assessor gives a rating which would be classed as a failure, a description of the odor must be included in the report. The person conducting the Odor Test should not allow the assessors to view any previous ratings or comments in any way. 5

32、. Repeat Step 4 for each assessor and each sample. 6. The odor rating is indicated by the arithmetic mean of all the assessors individual ratings, the value being rounded up to the nearest half point. To ensure that odor differentiation can be established by the assessors, all conditions being teste

33、d shall be conducted in the same time frame. For all the variants and conditions, the odor evaluation uses the rating of 1 to 6, with half-point ratings, as follows: Rating Scale Rating 1 not perceptible Rating 1.5 slightly perceptible Rating 2 perceptible, not disturbing Rating 2.5 clearly percepti

34、ble but not disturbing Rating 3 very perceptible but not disturbing Rating 3.5 intense enough to be slightly disturbing Rating 4 disturbing Rating 4.5 intense and disturbing Rating 5 strongly disturbing Rating 5.5 very intense, disturbing Rating 6 extremely disturbing The definition of a disturbing

35、odor is one that would be considered inappropriate for a new car smell. The smell of a component/ material is defined as disturbing, not when it is more concentrated, but rather when it transitions from one acceptable odor to another unacceptable odor upon conditioning. The concentrated odor of hot

36、plastic, hot rubber, hot leather, etc. would not qualify as a disturbing odor. A disturbing odor or inappropriate smell is also one that is identifiable as smells that are not normally associated with the interior of a new car, (i.e. sour milk, fish, perfume, burnt, musky, asphalt, rotten meat). The

37、 assessors should be encouraged to use the half point ratings to improve differentiation between samples. 7. The test report shall include: A reference to this standard. All necessary details for identifying the test samples. Material variant classification (A, B, C or D) from Table 1. Test conditio

38、n(s) (1, 2, 3, and/or 4) from Table 2. Identification of assessor by name or number. Individual and average odor rating. Samples defined as unacceptable should include an odor description.
