SCOPE This specification define
、s the performance requirements for tanned top grain or split leather made from steer hides to be used in steering wheel, shift/handbrake boot or knob applications. 2. APPLICATION This performance specification is to be used for steering wheel, shift/handbrake boot or knob applications. The material
、must also meet its respective WSS-M1F21 or WSS-M1F22-X specification requirements. 2.1 LIMITATION Foam used on the leather wrapped steering wheel cannot contain Dioctyl phthalate (DOP) in its formulation. Foam containing DOP will migrate thru the leather and cause topcoat peel in the field. 3. MATER

、 on wrapped steering wheels assemblies) 3.11.1 Steering Wheel Wear Rubbing 180,000 cycles (RQT-110601-017086/9/latest) Test procedure: - Secure production representative steering wheel in test fixture. - Position a 44.5 +/- 2mm wide strip of #10 unbleached and unsized duck cloth on the steering whee
、l rim. - Ensure a smooth and reciprocating stroke od 95 +/- 2mm at 25 +/- 2 strokes per minute is achieved. - The cloth must cover the steering wheel rim from one parting line to the other. - Weigh the free end of the cloth with a 0.45 +/- 0.05 Kg mass. - The test is to be run 180,000 cycles at an a
、mbient air temperature of 21 +/- 3 degrees C. - The cloth is to be replaced at 90,000 cycles. - The number of cycles reached when wear becomes apparent is to be noted. Wear is defined as wear through to the russet. Fully losing the grain texture is allowed. - Test 6 samples per color. - Record and r

、min at 60 C Test procedure: Cement 4 pieces of leather (4mm x 50mm x rim circumference) at the points where the torques are to be applied. An alternative method would be to use a toothed clamping block to apply torque to the rim material. Apply only enough clamping force as is required to prevent th
、e clamp from slipping on the rim surface material. The test samples must be conditioned for a minimum of 3 hours at 22 +/- 2 C or 60 +/- 2 C. The high and low temperature samples must be tested within 5 minutes after removal from the conditioning chamber, or an appropriate time as determined by cool
、ing rate tests at supplier facility. The Ford engineering approved test fixture is clamped to the wheel rim and torque is applied for 60 seconds, or until the rim material breaks free from the supporting substrate, or insert structure. For leather wrapped spokes, the spokes area must also be tested
、in a similar manner. For heated steering wheels, the resistance change from pre and post test parts must be no more than 5 %. Each specific steering wheel may require unique clamping fixture due to its unique rim geometry. Record and retain steering wheels, sample lot information and torque/twist re
