、s (i.e., Class A)* on the formed part shall be free of stretch marks, die marks, nicks, scratches or other defects affecting the appearance of the plated parts. Buffing of the final chromium plating is not permitted. * Engineering may designate the significant (Class A) surfaces on the engineering d

、rawing and may also specify on the drawing check points (C points) for specific evaluation of the plating thickness. Unless otherwise specified, significant surfaces are those surfaces directly visible or visible by reflection when the finished part is assembled on the truck and/or those surfaces wh

、ich can be a source of corrosion products which are visible either directly or by reflection. 4.2 Plating Requirements 4.2.1 Appearance Plated parts shall exhibit a bright and uniformly reflective finish. The plating shall be smooth and free of stains, pin holes, buffing and polishing lines or other

、 defects affecting the plated appearance or the ability of the plating to pass required corrosion tests. The appearance of production parts shall match color and finish of the master samples as agreed upon between the NAVISTAR Plant Quality Control Department and the supplier. Chrome plated aluminum

、 bumpers must meet the acceptance criteria described in Table 2. 4.2.1.1 Field service experience has indicated that some trivalent chromium plating systems produce a plated surface susceptible to premature tarnishing. Use of trivalent chromium is not permitted unless supplier has sufficient field d

、ata to demonstrate the capability of their trivalent chromium system. 4.2.2 Thickness - ASTM B 487 and ASTM B 764 Requirements for minimum plating thickness are described in Table 1. Plating thickness may be determined by the microscopic method of ASTM B 487 or the electrochemical method of ASTM B 7

、64. In the event of conflict, the microscopic method shall be the referee method. TABLE 1. Suppliers are required to assume all patent liability. 2008 by Navistar, Inc. 4.2.2.1 In all cases, the semi-bright nickel thickness shall be no

、less than 60% of total nickel thickness consisting of semi-bright, bright and special nickel layer added to provide discontinuities in chrome. 4.2.2.2 The thickness of the plating layers is dependent upon the nature of the chrome deposited as described. 4.2.2.3 Due to the complex geometry of highly

、formed parts, such as exhaust pipes and bumpers, there may be a vast difference in the plated thickness between low and high current density locations. It may not be practical and/or cost effective to meet the minimum thickness in low current density locations on these parts. In such cases, the supp

With the approval of Materials Engineering, an average of plating thickness at specified check points (C-points) may be used to meet the minimum plating thickness. Howev

、er, at no location on the part will the plating thickness be below 60% of the minimum thickness specified. 4.2.2.4 Engineering exceptions to the minimum plating thickness requirements described herein shall be shown on the engineering drawing.4.2.3 STEP Test Requirements - ASTM B 764 The bright nick

、el layer shall exhibit a minimum of 100mV anodic potential difference to the semi- bright nickel layer on all significant surfaces as determined per the STEP (Simultaneous Thickness and Electrode Potential) test method. 4.2.3.1 The microdiscontinuous top nickel layer shall be equal to or more noble

、than the bright nickel layer but it shall not exhibit a potential difference greater than 20 mV more than the bright nickel layer. 4.2.4 Chrome Microporosity - ASTM B 456 The microporous chrome layer shall exhibit a minimum of 10,000 pores/cm2as determined by the copper deposition (Dubpernell) metho

、d as described in ASTM B 456, or a minimum of 2000 pores/cm2 as determined by active corrosion sites when tested per ASTM B 456. 4.3 Corrosion Resistance - ASTM B 368 Plated parts will be subjected to copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray (CASS) test per ASTM B 368 with the following exceptions:

、 1. Scribe the sample to the base metal using an “X” mark with 75 mm (3 in) legs. 2. After testing for 66 hours, rinse the surface in warm water and air-dry. Clean the surface with a soft camel hair brush saturated with a mild detergent solution. Rinse the sample in warm water and wipe gently with a

Evaluate immediately. 4.3.1 Requirements 4.3.1.1 There shall be no undercutting or peeling of the plating around the scribe mark. 4.3.1.2 There shall be no evidence of base metal corrosion deposits or blisters on the significant surfaces. 4.3.1.3 No corrosion pits larger than 1.5 mm (0.
