This specification covers Schiffli embroidered identification k- Fd shoulder sleeve and breast insignia used by the Navy and Coast Guard. * 1.2 Classification. The embroidered insignia shall be of the following

15、hall take precedence. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Guide sample. Samples, when furnished are solely for guidance and information to the contractor (see 6.3). Variation from the specification may appear in the sample, in which case the specification shall govern. 3.2 First article. When specified, the contrac
16、tor shall furnish sample unit(s) for first article inspection and approval (see 4.3 and 6.2). 3.3 Materials. 3.3.1 Base cloth. The base cloth shall be cotton or a polyester/cotton blend, twill weave, single or plied yarns, 6.0 to 8.0 ounces per square yard, with a breaking strength of 150 pounds per
17、 inch (min.) in the warp and 70 pounds per inch (min.) in the filling. 18、U) * 3.3.2.1 Rayon yarn (needle). The rayon yarn shall be a bright, continuous filament, regenerated cellulose type rayon. Yarn size and color shall be as specified in the applicable figure or stitch enlargement. The use of sulphur dyes is prohibited. The dyed yarn shall show good colorfastness to w
19、et-dry cleaning, bleaching, wet heat (hot pressing), light, and laundering when the end item is tested in 4.4.1. 3.3.2.1.1 Color matching. The color shall match the approved standard shade sample under artificial daylight having a color temperature of 7500 (+500) Kelvin and shall be a good approxima
20、tion to the standard shade sample under incandescent lamplight. at 2850 (+loo) - Kelvin. 3.3.2.2 Thread (bobbin). The bobbin thread shall be cotton, natural color, two ply or a continuous multifilament, undyed (white) nylon yarn. Yarn size shall be sufficient to assure proper stitch execution. * 3.3
21、.2.3 Thread, overedge (cover). Unless otherwise specified in the figure or stitch enlargement, the overedge (cover) thread shall be a bright, continuous multifilament, single ply, 600 denier rayon, with two ends feeding as one or one single ply of 1200 denier rayon, one end feed. * 3.3.2.4 Thread, o
22、veredge (needle and looper). The needle and looper thread shall be cotton conforming to type IC2, ticket number 00, three ply of V-T-276. In addition, the colored cotton overedge threads shall show good colorfastness to dry and wet heat (hot pressing) when tested as specified in 4.4.1. Unless otherw
23、ise specified, the color of the thread shall match the color of the background cloth. * 3.3.2.5 Metallic yarns. The synthetic metallic yarns shall consist of a metallic ribbon wound around a core yarn conforming to type III, classes 8 and 11 of MIL-E-17568. The synthetic metallic ribbon shall not sh
24、ow any evidence of discoloration or become tacky when tested as specified in 4.4.4. 3.3.3 Buckram. The buckram (when required) for the insignia shall be plain weave, natural or white in color, 2.5 ounces (min) per square yard, a minimum thread count of 25 ends per inch in the warp and 20 picks per i
25、nch in the filling, and a minimum breaking strength of 25 pounds per inch in the warp and 20 pounds per inch in the filling, of Compliance for the above requirements (see 4.1.1). The contractor shall furnish a Certificate * 3.4 Construction. The insignia shall be embroidered on a Schiffli automatic
26、type embroidery machine in accordance with this specification, guide sample and the applicable stitch enlargement. Stitch enlargements shall be furnished by the Government to the contractor for use in preparing the necessary punchings. The stitch enlargements shall not be altered in any way. NOTE: S
27、titch enlargements of the unit identification marks are furnished with the background size and individual letter size only. Stitch enlargements for individual ship names are not provided. 3.4.1 Embroidery stitches. The embroidery stitches shall be of the type, length, number and density as specified

T
29、he ground and overlay stitches shall be in accordance with the applicable stitch enlargement and shall completely cover the applicable background design area in a close, dense and tightly drawn manner to produce a clear, sharp execution of the design. The base cloth and underlay stitches shall not b
30、e visible. 3.4.3 Underlay stitches. Where underlay stitches are required, the number of stitches shall not be less than indicated on the applicable stitch enlargement or guide sample. Where underlay stitches are required, the stitches shall be inserted in the direction and manner most suitable for p
31、roper design execution. 3.4.4 Border stitches. The embroidered insignia shall be bordered by a Schrage stitch or a combination of Blatt and Schrage stitches provided it is equal in density to the specified Schrage stitch. The border stitch shall be as indicated on the applicable stitch enlargement o
32、r guide sample (not applicable to type I, style 2). 3.4.5 Cutting. The completely embroidered insignia shall be cut from the base cloth and properly trimmed before the overedging operation. Border stitching along the edge of the insignia shall not be cut. 3.4.6 Overedge stitching. Unless otherwise s
33、pecified, the insignia shall have overedge stitching superimposed on the border stitching using yarn specified in 3.3.2.3 and 3.3.2.4. The overedge stitching shall comform to stitch type 504 or 505 of FED-STD-751, using 26 (+4) stitches per inch with a stitch length of 1/8 (+ 1/32) inch. The needle-
34、and looper thread shall be cotton and the looper aid cover thread shall be two ends of 600 denier rayon or one single end of 1200 denier rayon. The overedge stitching shaIl start and finish on the edge of the design in accordance with industry practice, There shall be approximately a half inch overl
35、ap of the stitching; Stitching shall completely cover the edge of the base cloth. The free end of the overedge stitching chain shall extend a minimum of 1/2 inch, turned and secured to the backside of the insignia with a pressure sensitive tape or masking tape and shall not be visible on the face of
36、 the insignia. The masking tape shall be no closer than 1/8 inch from the overedging, 3.4.7 Stiffener. Insignia may be treated on the reverse side with a suitable stiffener, if required, to facilitate subsequent processing. The finish shall not affect the colors on the face of the insignia and shall
37、 not be adversely affected by storage or the requirements for end item testing. * 3.4.8 Construction requirements. The number of characters in a unit name

Embroidered characters and symbols shall completely cover the
46、background embroidery and underlay stitching and shall contain the minimum number of stitches indicated in table III. Characters shall be 1/4 (+ 1/16 - 1/32) inch high. All numerals shall be embroidered with style “A“ characters. Unless otherwise specified, all characters and symbols in a specific u
47、nit identification mark shall be of the same style. Definitions and requirements for lettering, numerais, and symbols are as follows and as illustrated in figures 2 and 3. * Characters - Alphabet letters and Arabic numerals Style A characters - expanded or extended Gothic Style B characters - compre
