9、ormance requirements for adjustable pipe wrenches of the heavy-duty and Stillson types and of nominal sizes ranging from 200 mm to 1 200 mm. NOTE a) The titles of standards referred to by number in the specification are given in appendix A. b) Requirements that must be specified by the purchaser are

10、 listed in appendix B. 2 Definitions 2.1 For the purposes of this specification the nomenclature used in figure 1 and figure 2 and the following definitions shall apply: acceptable acceptable to the authority administering this standard, or to the parties concluding the purchase contract, as relevan

11、t Amdt 1 defective a pipe wrench that fails in one or more respects to comply with the appropriate requirements of the specification fixed jaw the immovable jaw that forms part of the handle of the pipe wrench lot not less than 3 and not more than 500 pipe wrenches of the same type and nominal size,

12、 from one manufacturer, submitted at any one time for inspection and testing nominal size the over-all length of a wrench, in millimetres, when the jaws are opened to the maximum capacity SANS 1028:2008 Edition 1.1 4 3 Requirements 3.1 Type A wrench shall be of one of the following types, as specifi

13、ed by the purchaser: a) Heavy duty type (see figure 1); b) Stillson type (see figure 2); 3.2 Nominal size The nominal size of a wrench shall be one of those given in column 1 of table 1 or table 2 (as relevant), as specified by the purchaser. 3.3 Handle 3.3.1 Heavy duty type The handle of the wrench

14、 shall have an integral housing that accommodates the movable jaw and shall be of cast steel, malleable cast iron, or spheroidal graphite iron. The handle shall incorporate a fixed jaw that has a replaceable jaw insert of hardened steel. The jaw insert shall have teeth complying with the requirement

15、s of 3.5 and shall be so secured, by means of a pin or any other acceptable means, as to prevent it working loose. 3.3.2 Stillson type The handle of the wrench shall be of drop-forged steel and shall have an integral fixed jaw with teeth that are hardened and tempered and comply with the requirement

16、s of 3.5. 3.4 Movable jaw The movable jaw shall be of drop-forged steel and shall have teeth that are hardened and tempered and comply with the requirements of 3.5. The shank of the movable jaw shall have threads so shaped and cut as to engage with the internal threads of the adjusting nut. 3.5 Teet

17、h The teeth of movable jaws, fixed jaws, and jaw inserts shall be of such shape, size, and pitch as to enable the wrench to grip a pipe securely without crushing it and without slipping during normal operation. 3.6 Adjusting nut The adjusting nut shall be of steel that is suitably hardened and tempe

18、red. It shall be circular in shape, knurled or longitudinally serrated externally, and threaded internally to mate correctly with the threads of the movable jaw. The nut shall operate freely without excessive play and shall not jam or lock after the wrench has been tested in accordance with 6.3. 3.7

19、 Frame The frame of a Stillson type wrench shall be a one-piece casting of steel, malleable iron, or spheroidal graphite iron and shall be secured to the handle by means of a hinge pin or other equally effective means. 20、l have accept-ably shaped heads formed at each end by riveting or spinning. 3.9 Spring One or more springs shall be provided to so balance the movable jaw that its action is smooth and unimpeded in both directions over the full length of its travel and the spring(s) shall not be capable of displacem

21、ent during normal operation. 3.10 Hardness of components The hardness of components, determined in accordance with 6.2, shall conform to the following requirements: a) Handle and jaw shanks. The hardness of the shank of the handle and of the shank of the movable jaw shall not exceed 400 HV30. b) Jaw

22、s. The hardness of the teeth of movable jaws, fixed jaws, and jaw inserts, measured within the triangular profile of any tooth, shall be not less than 600 HV30 and not more than 700 HV30. 3.11 Workmanship Forgings or castings shall be well formed and free from flashes, burrs, and sharp edges. 3.12 F

23、inish Handles shall be coated with an enamel paint or any other acceptable finish. All other components shall have been given an acceptable anti-corrosive treatment. 3.13 Performance After a wrench has been tested in accordance with 6.3, the threads on the nut and movable jaw of the wrench shall sho

24、w no sign of deformation and there shall be no sign of permanent distortion of any other component. 27、y marked in a prominent position with the following information: a) the name or trade name of the manufacturer; b) the nominal size of the wrench in millimetres. 5 Sampling and compliance with the specification1)5.1 Sampling The following sampling procedure shall be applied in determining whether a

28、lot complies with the relevant requirements of the specification. The samples so taken shall be deemed to represent the lot. 5.1.1 Sample for inspection From the lot take at random the number of wrenches shown in column 2 of table 3 relative to the appropriate lot size shown in column 1. 30、mplementation of quality control or testing during manufacture is available to help in assessing the quality of the lot. It is also used as the procedure for adjudicating in cases of dispute. SANS 1028:2008 Edition 1.1 7 5.1.2 Sample for testing From the sample taken in accordance with 5.1.1, take a

31、t random the relevant number of wrenches shown in column 3 of table 3. 5.2 Compliance with the specification The lot shall be deemed to comply with the requirements of the specification if, after inspection and testing of the samples taken in accordance with 5.1, no defective is found. 6 Inspection

32、and methods of test 6.1 Inspection Examine each wrench in the sample taken in accordance with 5.1.1 for compliance with those requirements of the specification compliance with which is not assessed by the tests given in 6.2 and 6.3. 6.2 Hardness test Using the relevant procedure described in SANS 65

33、07-1 and a calibrated Vickers hardness testing machine, check each wrench in the sample taken in accordance with 5.1.2, for compliance with the requirements of 3.10. Amdt 1 6.3 Proof torque test With the jaws of the wrench suitably adjusted, grip a rigidly held solid mandrel of the appropriate diame

34、ter given in column 2 of table 1 or table 2, as relevant. Apply to the handle, at a point approximately 50 mm from its free end and at right angles to its axis, a force such that the torque at the axis of the mandrel is equal to the appropriate value given in column 3 of table 1 or table 2, as relev

35、ant. NOTE Do not jerk or strike the wrench. Apply the force at a steadily increasing rate until the required value is reached. Check for compliance with the relevant requirements of 3.6 and 3.13.
