、ications are designed to serve the public interest through eliminating misunderstandings between manufacturers and purchasers, facilitating interchangeability and improvement of products, and assisting the purchaser in selecting and obtaining with minimum delay the proper product for his particular

、need. Existence of such Standards and Publications shall not in any respect preclude any member or nonmember of TIAIEIA from manufacturing or selling products not conforming to such Standards and Publications, nor shall the existence of such Standards and Publications preclude their voluntary use by

、 those other than TIAIEIA members, whether the standard is to be used either domestically or internationally. Standards and Publications are adopted by TIAIEIA in accordance with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) patent policy. By such action, TIAIEIA does not assume any liability to

、any patent owner, nor does it assume any obligation whatever to parties adopting the Standard or Publication. TIAIEIA INTERIM STANDARDS TIAIEIA Interim Standards contain information deemed to be of technical value to the industry, and are published at the request of the originating Committee without

、 necessarily following the rigorous public review and resolution of comments which is a procedural part of the development of a TIAIEIA Standard. TIAIEIA Interim Standards should be reviewed on an annual basis by the formulating Committee and a decision made on whether to proceed to develop a TIAIEI

、A Standard on this subject. TIAIEIA Interim Standards must be cancelled by the Committee and removed from the TIAIEIA Standards Catalog before the end of their third year of existence. Publication of this TIAIEIA Interim Standard for trial use and comment has been approved by the Telecommunications

、Industry Association. Distribution of this TIAIEIA Interim Standard for comment shall not continue beyond 36 months from the date of publication. It is expected that following this 36 month period, this TIAIEIA Interim Standard, revised as necessary, will be submitted to the American National Standa

、rds Institute for approval as an American National Standard. Suggestions for revision should be directed to: Standards in accessible proximity to the PAS mounting location. See section 4.0. The vehicle shall provide finger clearance area for the installation and removal of the TIA phone connector (I

、S-788-A) which includes area for the release of the connector latching mechanism. The vehicle shall package protect for a minimum length of 90 mm in the plane perpendicular to mounting surface to protect for engagement and installation of the connector. The female threaded portion of the fasteners w

、hich secure the PAS to the vehicle, will be provided on the vehicle side. e.g. loose nuts, molded inserts, etc. The female fasteners will be able to properly engage screws lengths which protrude from the PAS at a range of: minimum 8 mm and a maximum of 12 mm. The fasteners will have a thread type of

、 4.0 x 0.7 mm. 4.0 Electrical interface Electrical interface of the PAS to the vehicle shall be through the TIA phone connector, referred to as TIA/EIA/IS-788-A. The cable length of this connection will be 325 +/- 1Omm from mounting hole “A“ to the end of the IS-788-A connector. See figure C. 5 TIAI

、EIAIIS-798 The IS-788-A connector and PAS shall be placed in the vehicle in close proximity which will allow operation and functionality within this cable length. The IS-788-A connector will always be located toward the rear of the vehicle from the location of the PAS, or located below the PAS if it

、 is mounted in a vertical orientation. The cable with the IS-788-A connection will exit the PAS envelope near the area designated as “area B“. See figure C. The connector should be placed in a position within the vehicle which allows easy access by the user. Connectors within the PAS envelope will b

、e required to meet a pull test of 8 lbs. in axial load and 4.5 lbs. at 90 degree angles (four directions). The connector/cable assembly will be without physical damage or loss of electrical continuity. Strain reliefs will meet an axial push/pull test of 8 lbs. Cable mounted over-molds will withstand

、 axial push/pull tests of 12 lbs. All cable interconnections within the PAS should be secured or protected as not to cause buzz, squeaks and rattles in the vehicle. 5 .O User Expectations 5.1 Phone/hang-up cup interface The method of phone interface to the cradle shall be intuitive and the locking m

、ethod shall provide a sensory indication that the phone has been engaged/disengaged. e.g. snap, click or detent. The lockilatching mechanism to release the phone should be obvious to the customer. 5.2 Design Homoligation guidelines of minimal 3.5 mm minimum radii should be employed. 5.3 Ease ofUse T

、he PAS should be designed to allow for one hand docking or removal of the phone from the hang-up cup. The PAS shall be designed for easy installation and removal from the vehicle or mounting interface. (less than five minutes with simple hand tools) 6 TIAIEIAIIS-798 6.0 Latch Integration To provide

、the consumer a means to easily install and remove the PAS to and from the vehicle, a latching system can be utilized. This section of the document will specify the guidelines for integration of a latching system into the TIA cellular phone environment. This latching system can be integrated into the

、 cellular phone environment by addressing the following topics: 0 0 0 Choosing and utilizing a latch interface which is common to both the vehicle manufactures and PAS suppliers. Specifying the guidelines and providing the information which a vehicle designer needs to incorporate the latching system

、 into the vehicle. Providing information and guidelines to the PAS or latch manufacture so they incorporate the latching system into use by the PAS. Let this be a reminder that the latching system is an option only, and that the common denominator for interfacing the PAS and vehicle, is the AMPS fou

、r hole mounting system. (see Figure E) See Figure F for a description of the latching system/TIA ideology. 6.1 Common latch interface The common latch interface which will be basis for the integration of a latch system between the PAS and vehicle is defined in document TIA/EIA-IS-790 Latch Specifica

、tion. 6.2 Guidelines for the vehicle integration of the latch Vehicle designers who wish to provide to their customers, the provisions for the use of a latching system, should follow the guidelines in this section of this specification and also adhere to the relevant physical requirements specified

、in document TIA/EIA-IS-790. The TIA cellular latch system will be utilized by the PAS customer in one of two formats: The first format is where the PAS manufacture includes the latch and release mechanism directly into the PAS envelope. In this case, finger clearance area is already specified by Fig

、ure D and no other considerations are required. The second format is an add-on latch option where the customer secures the latch to the bottom of their PAS. The add-on latch will be defined within an area, which is related to the PAS envelope and the four hole mounting pattern. The vehicle should pr

、otect for fiiger clearance around this area to allow the consumer access to engage the release mechanism and remove the PAS from the vehicle mounting location. See figure G for definition of this area. 7 TIAIEIAIIS-798 To preserve design flexibility, and to allow the vehicle designer the ability to

、design a system which is most attractive and functional to the consumer, the latch release mechanism should be designed such that it can be installed on either the left or right side of the PAS. In other words, the latch which attaches to the PAS should be symmetrical in design which will allow the

、customer the ability to mount the latch release on either side of the PAS. This means that the vehicle designer would be required to provide additional area for the latch and finger clearance area for the release of the latch only on one side of the PAS. Refer to Figure G. 6.3 Guidelines for the PAS

、 side of the latch The PAS can utilize the latch in one of two fashions: 1) fully integrated. 2) separate, or add-on latch. 6.3.1 Integrated latch If a PAS manufacture chooses to integrate the latch mechanism directly into the hang up cup, holder of the phone, or the phone itselc there are two guide

、lines to follow: 1) the release mechanism which the consumer activates to remove the PAS and all components of the latch system, must be contained within the solid PAS envelope as described in Figure B. (Finger clearance area in the vehicle for access to this release mechanism/button is already defi

、ned by this specification in Figure D.) 2) a latch producer must also adhere to all the relevant physical design requirements of TIA/EIA-IS-790-Latch Specification. 6.3.2 Separate, or add-on latch Manufactures who wish to produce a latch which mates to the TIA/EIA/IS-790 standard base and TIA cellul

、ar phone products, will follow the stated design guidelines: 0 Adherence to all relevant physical design requirements of TIA/EIA/IS-790- Latch Specification. 0 The standard interface for the PAS/add-on latch will be the AMPS four hole mounting pattern as described in Figure E. The add-on latch will

、include female fasteners which have a thread format of M4 x .7 mm. The latch must protect for accepting a protruding screw length from the PAS of minimum 8 mm and a maximum of 12 mm. 0 The latch must fit physically in the area specified in Figure H. Adherence to these dimensions will allow the vehic

、le designers and latch suppliers the ability to design perspective products which properly interface. It is intended that the latch release feature is designed to be operated from one side of the PAS only. The theory of this will allow the customer and vehicle 8 TIAIEIAIIS-798 designers flexibility

、to optimize the presentation of the PAS products by allowing the latch to be mounted on either side of the PAS. 9 TIAIEIAIIS-798 i- l PHONE SCREWS Y 1 HANG UP CUP mm FASTENERS FIGURE A TYPICAL PAS MOUNTING CONFIGURATION AVEHICLE FORWARD 240.0 END VIEW 2X4d.O 1 140.0 -= HOLE POSITIC REF SIDE VIEW FIG
