、 shall beinterpreted as referring to the latest edition of that code or standard.PERFORMANCE5 Fire Test5.1 General5.1.1 When fire tested as described in 5.2.1 5.3.6, the water discharged from the sprinklers shall becapable of controlling the fires originating in an attic such that compliance with th

、e following requirementsis demonstrated:a) The maximum area of breach (opening) in the roof deck caused by the fire shall not exceed6ft2(0.56 m2).b) The maximum number of operated sprinklers shall not exceed the number of sprinklersrequired to be included in the sprinkler system hydraulic design as

、referenced in themanufacturers installation instructions.c) The sprinklers installed at the peak nearest each end of the attic test room shall not operate.5.1.2 Sprinklers in each temperature rating are to be subjected to the tests specified in 5.2.1 5.3.6.5.2 Test Arrangement5.2.1 Test room5.2.1.1

、Simulated attic test rooms are to be constructed having a slope or slopes representative of therange of attic slopes intended to be protected by the sprinklers. In every case, the testing shall include theminimum attic slope referenced intended to be protected by the sprinklers. A simulated attic te

、st roomshall be constructed having a length not less than 52 ft (15.8 m) and the maximum attic width intended tobe protected by the sprinklers. The attic is to be constructed of wood trusses manufactured from 2 by 4inch and 2 by 6 inch trade size lumber installed on 24 inch (61 cm) centers. The wood

、 trusses constructedfrom 2 by 6 inch trade size lumber shall be installed along the slope. Nominal inch thick plywood shallbe installed along the attic slope as roof deck sheathing and also installed on the underside of the attictest room. The sheathing shall be terminated flush with the ends of the

、 trusses to provide for ventilationat the eaves on both sides of the attic room. A 2 inch 0.25 inch (51 mm 6.4 mm) gap between theends of the plywood shall be provided along the length of the attic peak to simulate the ventilationprovided by a ridge type vent.5.2.1.2 If sprinkler protection is inten

、ded to be provided for hip type attic spaces or attic compartmentedby vertical barriers, additional attic test rooms shall be constructed to represent these configurations.AUGUST 9, 2012 UL 199G 5UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM U

、L5.2.1.3 The attic test room is to have closable openings for access.5.2.2 Ignition source5.2.2.1 The ignition source shall be sufficient to create a fire that is large enough to open all of thesprinklers installed nearest the attic peak. For fires originated at the eave, a nominal 6 lb (2.7 kg) woo

、dcrib consisting of four alternate layers of four trade size 2 by 2 inch kiln-dried spruce or fir lumber 12 inch(300 mm) long placed on top of 12 by 12 by 4 inch (300 by 300 by 102 mm) steel pan containing heptaneand water has been considered an acceptable ignition source. For fires originated at ot

、her locations withinthe attic test room, one or two nominal 33 lb (15 kg) wood cribs each consisting of ten alternate layers offive trade size 2 by 2 inch kiln-dried spruce or fir lumber 20 in (508 mm) long placed on top of 21 by 21by 4 inch (533 by 533 by 102 mm) steel pan containing heptane and wa

、ter have been consideredacceptable ignition sources. For all cribs, the alternate layers are to be placed at right angles to theadjacent layers and the individual wood members in each layer are to be evenly spaced along the lengthof the previous layer of wood members and stapled.5.2.3 Sprinkler inst

、allation5.2.3.1 Sprinklers are to be installed in the test room at the maximum spacing referenced in themanufacturers installation instructions.5.2.3.2 The sprinklers located within the attic test room are to be installed in a piping configuration andconnected to a water supply that provides the req

、uired water flow to each of the sprinklers installed withinthe room.5.2.3.3 Sprinklers installed near the peak of the attic are to be installed at the maximum distance belowthe peak referenced in the manufacturers instructions. Sprinklers installed along the slope shall beinstalled at the maximum di

、stance below the bottom of the top truss chord referenced in themanufacturers instructions.5.3 Test method5.3.1 Tests are to be conducted using attic room arrangements that are considered representative of theconfigurations intended to be protected by the sprinklers.5.3.2 If sprinkler protection is

、intended using both wet and dry sprinkler systems, fire tests shall beconducted using both a wet and simulated dry system unless the manufacturer demonstrates that thetests using a simulated dry system operates fewer sprinklers than required to be included in the hydraulicdesign for a wet system. Fo

、r the simulated dry system tests, the water delivery to the sprinklers shall bedelayed 60 seconds after the first sprinkler operates.5.3.3 The moisture content of the plywood in the area of the fire ignition shall be within 4 to 9 percent. The moisture content of the trusses in the area of the fire o

、rigin shall be within 6 to 12 percent.5.3.4 For the nominal 6 lb (2.7 kg) crib, 16 ounces (0.5 L) of water and eight ounces (0.24 L) of heptaneare to be placed in a pan directly below the wood crib. For the nominal 33 lb (15 kg) crib, approximately1-inch (25.4-mm) layer of water and 32 ounces (0.95

、L) of heptane are to be placed in a pan directly belowthe wood crib. For the fire test originated near the eave, the edge of the wood crib shall be located within30 inches (76 cm) of the outer edge of the attic.AUGUST 9, 2012UL 199G6UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORD

、ISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL5.3.5 The heptane in the pan located beneath the crib is to be ignited.5.3.6 The fire test is to be conducted for 30 minutes after the ignition of the wood crib, unless after 10minutes, all the combustibles are extinguished or the fire is controlled in such mann

、er that no additionaldamage to the test structure will occur or sprinklers will operate. The water flow to the sprinklers is to bethe minimum flow rate specified in the installation instructions for the sprinkler coverage area tested.AUGUST 9, 2012 UL 199G 7UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULAUGUST 9, 2012UL 199G8No Text on This Page
