21、d v Introduction Traditionally, linear bar codes and two-dimensional symbols have been considered as write once/read many times ( WORM) t echnologies. The advent of R ewritable Media, which can completely change the displayed information, provides applications with an opportunity to erase previously
22、 encoded data carriers and human readable data and to overwrite this with new data. There is a requirement to ensure that Rewritable Media can be fully integrated with pre-existingW ORM applications. Additionally, R ewritable Media c an b e combinedw ith rewritable R FID (radio frequencyi dentificat
23、ion) technologies to create what is called a Rewritable Hybrid Media product. In this form, the characteristics of the optical data carrier a nd R FID data c arrier c an b e used in an i ntegrated m anner in business applications . Because the rewriting procedure for each technology is different, th
24、ere is a requirement to ensure that this data is synchronised, not necessarily to be identical, on each rewriting cycle. Because the Rewritable Media and RFID tags can be re-used for a number of cycles, they can contribute to environmental improvement as they produce a s maller carbon footprint over
25、 their lifetime than current systems that use paper a nd c ard-based products. Also, by c ombining Rewritable M edia with R FID, the number o f single-use RFID labels can be reduced. Manufacturers of b ar c ode equipment and RFID equipment, and the userso f both these data capture technologies, requ
26、ire publicly available standard test specifications for the objective assessment of the quality of R ewritable H ybrid Media and its c omponent parts. S uch standards c an be referred to when developing equipment and application standards, or determining the quality of the data carriers. Such test s
27、pecifications form the basis for development of measuring equipment for process control and quality assurance purposes during the rewriting process as w ell as a fterwards. T his I nternational Standard provides r equirements a nd guidelines to achieve a specified quality requirement for application
28、s making use of Rewritable Hybrid Media. These requirements also address the fact that any batch of Rewritable Hybrid Media is heterogeneous, with some items that are relatively new being intermixed with other items that have been erased and re-written many times. Procedures outlined in this Interna
29、tional Standard ensure, irrespective of the age and number of cycles a chieved by a n item o f Rewritable Hybrid M edia, that the minimum r equired quality o utput i s maintained. The bar code symbol needs to be produced in sucha way as tob e reliably decoded at the point of use, ifi t is to fulfil
30、its basic objective as a machine-readable data carrier. Similarly, the RFID tag needs to be encoded in a correct manner to be reliably read at the point of use . This International Standard specifies the overall quality process and associated methodology for Rewritable Hybrid Media. This Internation
31、al Standard determines quality characteristics to ensure that various types of product combination and integrated Rewritable Hybrid Media system can be implemented in a reliable and robust manner. This I nternational S tandard contributes t o the interoperabilityo f data carriersa nd d evices t hat

In addition, as the Rewritable Media technology develops, this International Standard will provide a benchmark to assess whether the new developments are capable of being applied ina manner compatible with existing data carriers . 34、r ewritable hybrid media data c arriers, which combine RFID t ag t echnologyw ith l inear and/or two-dimensional bar c ode symbologies that are written to ane rasable substrate. Three main product configuration types are addressed within this International Standard: Rewritable Media, which supports
35、the rewriting of linear or two-dimensiona l symbols; Rewritable Hybrid Media, which integrates the Rewritable Media with an RFID tag; Rewritable Media combinedw ith RFID technologyt hat are physically separate data carriers but still require their data encoding processes to be integrated as part of
36、a Rewritable Hybrid Media system. In particular, this International Standard defines the base requirements for Rewritable Media and Rewritable Media devices (see 6.2), defines a dditional methods f or p rocess control of t he R ewritable Media over multiple erasure and rewrite cycles (see 6.4), defi
37、nes reference standards for evaluating the RFID tag component (see 7.2 and 7.3), defines a dditional methods f or p rocess control of t he R FID component over m ultiple erasure and rewrite cycles (see 7.4), provides i nformation to ensure that the data encoded i n the bar c ode symbology and RFID d
38、ata carrier are synchronous, i.e. are derived from the same source data set (see Clause 8). NOTE Depending on t he application, the encoded d ata can be i dentical or different (e.g. one data carrier could provide additional data). Because of the interdependencyb etween the Rewritable Hybrid Media a
39、nd the rewrite device used to create the o ptical i mage, the e ntire Rewritable H ybrid Media system n eeds t o be taken into account to d efine conformance. Therefore, there is a requirement to define the capability of achieving a given print qualityg rade as defined in relevant standards. This Re

49、writing and erasing of optical data including bar code symbologies and eye readable data. This isa chieved by incorporating an optical imaging layer in the media substrate. The process of e rasing a nd t hen rewriting is normallya chieved in a device t hat c ombines the functions, or in separate devices addressing each process.
