、XTENDED TIME-TESTING OF WIRE and CABLE INSULATIONS FOR SERVICE IN WET LOCATIONS 1.0 SCOPE This publication describes procedures for long term testing of extruded wire and cable insulations for service in wet (submerged) locations. It is intended to apply to insulations rated for service up to 2000 v

、olts inclusive. Tests may be conducted on single or multiple wall insulations, using either ac or dc voltage, as applicable. 2.0 TEST SPECIMENS Each test specimen shall be an insulated 12 or 14 AWG solid or stranded conductor of a length sufficient to immerse 10 feet (3.05m) plus have sufficient end

、s for electrical connections. No separator shall be used between the conductor and insulation and no covering shall be applied over the insulation. The insulation may be applied in multiple layers of different materials (composite insulation). The wall thickness shall have a minimum point no less th

、an 0.027 inches (0.69mm) and maximum point no greater than 0.035 inches (0.89mm). 3.0 TEST SET-UP 3.1 IMMERSION OF TEST SPECIMENS 10 feet 0.5 inches (3.05m 12.7mm) of each specimen shall be immersed in a bath of tap water with an initial pH of 6.0 to 8.0 inclusive. The bath shall be maintained at a

、designated temperature 2C. The water level shall be maintained continuously over the immersed length of the specimen. Either tap or distilled water may be used to make up evaporation losses. Note: Suggested ways to limit evaporation are to either use a tight fitting cover over the bath, with specime

、n test ends brought out through water tight bushings or use a layer of plastic balls. The water shall be maintained at ground potential by means of a metal electrode inserted in the bath. For dc testing, the positive electrode shall be grounded. 3.2 WATER TEMPERATURE Water temperature shall be maint

、ained at one of the following temperatures 2C: 90C 75C 4.0 PROCEDURE 4.1 VOLTAGE WITHSTAND A 3000 volt 49 to 61 Hertz test potential shall be applied for 5 minutes between the conductor of the test specimen and the grounded water bath in accordance with the following schedule: Initial test: Immediat

、ely after immersion 2ndtest: 1 day after immersion 3rdtest 7 days after immersion 4thtest: 14 days after immersion All succeeding test: at 7, 14, or 28 day intervals after the 4thtest. ANSI/ICEA T-22-294-2016 Page 2 4.2 CONTINUOUS TEST VOLTAGE A continuous test voltage as given in 4.2.1 or 4.2.2 sha

、ll be applied to the conductor of each test specimen immediately after the initial withstand test and maintained throughout except during measurement and withstand test periods. 4.2.1 Insulation for dc service The continuous test voltage shall be 600 volts dc negative. 4.2.2 Insulation for ac servic

、e The continuous test voltage shall be 600 volts 49 to 61 Hertz. 4.3 TEST DURATION The minimum test duration shall be 16 weeks for dc service or 26 weeks for ac service. No maximum time is specified. 5.0 MEASUREMENTS One or more of the following electrical properties shall be measured in accordance

、with ICEA T-27-581 at the same time intervals as in Section 4.1. Measurements shall be made either immediately before or immediately after the withstand test. 1. Insulation Resistance (500V dc) 2. Dissipation Factor (or Power Factor) 3. Permittivity (or Specific Inductive Capacity) 4. Stability Fact

、or NOTE: All properties of a given material may not change at the same rate. The properties of different materials may not change in the same manner. A useful technique is to measure a number of properties early in the test and then continue measuring those that show the most significant change. 6.0

、 REPORT The test report shall include the following: 1. Description of the test specimen, including conductor size and stranding; and insulation type and thickness. 2. Number of specimens tested. 3. Water bath temperature and temperature variation. 4. Test voltage; withstand and continuous, and whet

、her ac or dc. 5. Value of measured electrical properties and measurement intervals. This information may be reported in chart or graph form if data points are indicated and scales are chosen which effectively portray the magnitude of changes in values. If a number of specimens are tested simultaneou

、sly, average values may be reported. 6. Time to failure of any specimen, location of failure in the test length, and whether failure occurred at withstand or continuous voltage. 7.0 REFERENCE ANSI/ICEA T-27-581 Standard Test Methods for Extruded Dielectric Power, Control, Instrumentation, and Portable Cables for Test
