、Designation: F1889 05 (Reapproved 2010)An American National StandardStandard Guide forStraightness Measurement of Arrow Shafts1This standard is issued under the fixed designation F1889; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revisio

、n, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.INTRODUCTIONArrow shaft straightness is a desired characteristic. Unfortunately, straightness is currentlymeasured

、using varying methods at varying span lengths. The archery industry, as well as consumers, have recognized that it is difficult to compare measurements at these various spans using differentmeasurement methods. This guide proposes the use of a fixed span distance, for all but a few very short shafts,

、instead ofusing various spans based on various manufactured shaft lengths. The span length of 28 in. wasselected based on typical manufactured shaft lengths, as well as other ATA/ASTM industry standards.Using this arrow shaft straightness guide will benefit consumers as well as the archery industry.

、1. Scope1.1 This guide covers the formulation and designation ofstraightness measurement standards and nomenclature forarrow shafts.1.2 This guide is designed to provide manufacturers andconsumers a means for measuring the straightness of arrowshafts with tools and devices available in the archery i

Significance and Use3.1 The measurement system presented in this guide isintended to ensure

、uniform arrow shaft straightness measure-ment standards to avoid confusion of the consumer, whichresults from the use of different straightness measurementsystems.4. Measurement Guidelines for Arrow Shaft Straightness4.1 Straightness MeasurementThe most prevalent andcommonly accepted method of measu

、ring arrow shaft straight-ness involves supporting the arrow shaft along a known, fixedspan, and using an indicator device while the arrow shaft isrotated about its axis on wheels or bearings. For this guide, aspan type measurement is to be used. The length of the arrowshaft to be tested, the span d

、istance to be used, and theequipment to be used are defined as follows:4.1.1 Shaft LengthThe shaft length to be used for straight-ness measurement is the actual manufactured shaft length ofeach arrow shaft size/type.4.1.2 Span DistanceThe length of the span to be used forthis test is 28 in. (0.711 m

、) with a length tolerance of 60.125in. (3.2 mm). For those shafts that are manufactured less than29 in. in length, the span distance to be used is 25 in. (63.5 cm)and adjusted to an equivalent 28 in. reading using the approxi-mate conversion formula:Approximate Conversion Formula:28-in. straightness

、 value = 25-in. straightness value 3 28/25For example:straightness at 25 in. = 0.0030 in.straightness at 28 in. = 0.0030 in. 3 28/25where 28/25 = 1.12,straightness at 28 in. = 0.0030 in. 3 1.12 = 0.0034 in.4.1.3 Measurement LocationArrow shafts shall be mea-sured for straightness at the center of th

The rotation speed shall notexceed the resolution ability of the measurement device toensure accurate measurements.4.1.7 Shaft RoundnessAccuracy of this measurementmethod depends

、 upon consistent roundness of the arrow shaft. In situations where shafts are not round, this attribute can befactored out of the straightness measurement by the use ofadditional measurement devices at the span supports. If thisadjustment method is used, it shall be noted along with themeasurement va

、lue.4.2 Measurement AccuracyThe measurement accuracy ofthe laser shall be equal to or better than 60.001 in. (0.025 mm)under ASTM standard temperature conditions.5. Product Marking and Specification Disclosure5.1 Straightness measurements commonly are presented intwo ways including a plus-minus (6)

、reading, as well as totalindicator reading (TIR). The method of measurement shall beclearly defined with the measurement value.5.1.1 Plus-Minus (6)This measurement value in inchesrepresents the range of measurements from the average value. For Example:straightness = 60.001 in.
