Du
、ring the development of this standard, the designations of the conductor rails have been revised as follows: the designation formerly known as No. 74 FB conductor rail, is now No. 75 FB conductor rail because the actual mass per metre is 75.17 kg/m; the designation formerly known as No. 75 TW conduc
、tor rail, is now No. 74 TW conductor rail because the actual mass per metre is 74.49 kg/m. Assessed capability. Users of this British Standard are advised to consider the desirability of quality system assessment and registration against BS EN ISO 9002 by a third party certification body. Compliance
、 with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. BSI 1997 1 BS 7865 : 1997 Specification 1 Scope This standard specifies requirements for rolled steel conductor rails used for the supply of electrical power for traction in third rail and fourth rail electrified rai
、lways. The chemical composition and electrical conductivity of the rolled steel used, and the dimensions and tolerances of the conductor rails themselves are specified. In addition to the definitive requirements, this standard also requires the items detailed in clause 3 to be documented. For compli
、ance with this standard, both the definitive requirements and the documented items have to be satisfied. NOTE 1. The section properties are given for information in annex A. NOTE 2. This standard may also be applied to other conductor rail sections than those shown in figures 1, 2 and 3. 2 Reference
、s 2.1 Normative references This British Standard incorporates, by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. These normative references are made at the appropriate places in the text and the cited publications are listed on the inside back cover. For dated references, only the e

If requested by th
、e purchaser at the time of enquiry the manufacturer shall describe the source of steel supply and the steelmaking and casting processes employed. The manufacturer shall not alter these without the agreement of the purchaser. 4.2 Manufacture of rails The rails shall be manufactured from a hot-rolled
、section finished in accordance with the section tolerances of clause 11. The rolling and finishing processes shall be the responsibility of the manufacturer. If requested by the purchaser at the time of enquiry or order the manufacturer shall describe the rolling and finishing processes employed (se
、e clause 3 f). The manufacturer shall not alter these without the agreement of the purchaser. NOTE 1. The purchaser may undertake quality assurance audits as considered necessary. NOTE 2. The purchaser may witness the manufacturing process, and sampling and testing operations. 5 Chemical composition
、 When tested in accordance with clause 12 the chemical composition of the steel shall conform to the limits given in table 1. Table 1. 33、tor rail sections. 7 Marking 7.1 Branding NOTE 1. If agreed at the time of enquiry and order, other information may be included in the brand marking. (see clause 3 c). NOTE 2. Some section profiles, e.g. No. 65, or service applications, preclude the use of branding. Where brand marks are not preclud
、ed they shall be rolled in relief on one side of the web, or other agreed position of each rail. The brand markings shall include: a) the number of this British Standard; b) the identity of the rail section; c) the identification mark of the manufacturer; d) the last two figures of the year of manuf
、acture. Each element of the brand mark shall be separated by a hyphen of minimum length 0.7 times the height of the brand letters and numbers, for example: BS 7865 - 75 FB - X b) the number of the ingot or the continuously cast strand and bloom; c) the position of the rail relative to the top of the
、 ingot or bloom. NOTE. For the purpose of identification, a rail should be considered to be that which exists as a single length after hot sawing. Where such rails are subsequently cold sawn or machined to produce two or more shorter lengths, these should each bear the identification of the original
、 hot sawn rail. 7.2.2 Manual hot stamping When manual hot stamping is carried out the specified rail identification shall be stamped on the side of the rail web, or an agreed location, at a distance approximately 500 mm from the rail end. 7.2.3 Machine hot stamping When repetitive machine hot stampi
、ng is carried out, the specified rail identification shall appear at least once every 5 m along the length of the rail. 7.2.4 Casting process identification The manufacturer shall ensure that rails rolled from continuously cast blooms can be separately identified from rail produced from ingots. 7.2.
、5 Sequence casting identification In the case of sequence continuous casting, a heat shall be considered as including all blooms up to, but excluding, the first bloom that is known to be entirely of the next melt.6 BSI 1997 BS 7865 : 1997 Issue 2, December 1997 | | 8 Electrical resistivity The elect
、rical resistivity of the rail steel shall be measured in accordance with clause 13. The electrical resistivity of the steel shall not exceed 11.04mV cm at a rail temperature of 15 C. 9 Gauges The master rail profile and all the gauges required for checking the manufacture shall be provided by the ma
、nufacturer, at his own expense. 10 Freedom from defects Removal of minor surface defects shall be by a method approved by the purchaser. No other manufacturing operations shall be carried out with the object of concealing any defects. 11 Tolerances 11.1 Rail section profile The tolerances applied to
、 the nominal rail section profile dimensions shall be in accordance with table 2. Table 2. Section tolerances Dimensions in mm Overall height of rail measured at the rail end Width of head Thickness of web Width of foot 20.50 +1.00 0.80 0.80 1.20 11.2 Rail length The tolerance to be applied to the n
、ominal ordered length shall be 25 mm up to a maximum main length of 18.3 m. Special requirements for other length tolerances shall be agreed between the purchaser and manufacturer at the time of enquiry and order. (See clause 3 d). 11.3 End squareness The deviation from square in both horizontal and
、 vertical directions shall not exceed 0.50 mm. All burrs arising from the cold sawing or machining of the rail ends shall be removed prior to final inspection and despatch. 11.4 Straightness A finished rail, after cold straightening, shall, when standing on its base or lying on its side, be capable
、of being pulled by hand into a straight line and of retaining that position. The straightness of the rail shall be judged by eye but, in case of doubt or dispute, the affected portion shall be checked using a 1500 mm straightedge. The maximum permissible deviation shall be 1.5 mm measured as the max
、imum ordinate on a chord of 1500 mm. Rails shall, if agreed between the purchaser and manufacturer at the time of enquiry and order, have the ends checked by means of a 1000 mm straightedge. The maximum deviation from straight, in both the horizontal and vertical planes, shall not exceed 1.0 mm meas
、ured as the maximum ordinate on a chord of 1000 mm (See clause 3 e). Any rails not conforming to these requirements shall be rectified and re-inspected. 11.5 Twist The maximum twist permissible shall be an angle of 3 in an 18.3 m rail length, with a pro rata adjustment on other rail lengths. 12 Chem
、ical analysis The chemical composition of each heat of steel shall conform to the limits given in table 1. 13 Electrical resistivity tests 13.1 Method of test The test to determine electrical resistivity shall be carried out on a sample approximately 2 m long cut from a rolled rail. Unless otherwise
、 agreed at the time of enquiry and order, the sample position shall be at the discretion of the manufacturer. Place the sample test piece on insulated knife edge contacts approximately 1500 mm apart, and make electrical connections with cleaned ends of the sample test piece. The distance between the knife edges shall be measured to within an accuracy of 1.0 mm. Pass a direct current of not less than 100 A through the rail and measure the drop of voltage across the knife edges by means of a milli-voltmeter. Record the relative humidity which shall be betw
