19、alysisandtesting.ItsimportanceisrecognizedinthisEuropeanStandardwhichgives guidanceongeneralmethodsforthesamplingofwoodpreservativesandpreservativetreatedtimber. Suchsamplesshouldberepresentativeofthematerialsunderexaminationandinaformthatmakesthe determinationoftherequireddatapossible. Noattempthas
20、beenmadeheretodefinerigidlyanydetailedmethodologytobefollowedinoperationsinthese areasbecausethismaydependuponthenatureofthepreservative,themethodoftreatmentandtheparticular requirementsofe.g.nationalauthoritiesorqualitycontrolandcertificationbodies. Furthermore,theobjectivesofeachanalysis,andthedem

ThisEuropeanStandardisapplicabletotheprovisionofappropriatesamplesforanalysiswhichcanbeusedto checkthecontentofactiveandotheringredientsinpreservativeformulations,andthecontentofactiveandother ingredientsofwoodpreservativesintreatedtimber,eitherbefore,duringoraftertheservicelifeofthetimber. NOTE Attentionisdrawntotheneedtocomplywithanystatutoryregulationsthatgoverntheuseandstorageof flammableliquids. 5 Guidanceonsamplingpreservatives 5.1General Themethodofsamplingchosenshould
38、ensurethatthesampleobtainedisasrepresentativeaspossibleofthe totalconsignment. 5.1.1 Suspectconsignment Aconsignmentshouldbeconsideredsuspectif: a) acontainerisdamagedordefective; b) thereisanydoubtastothenatureofthecontentsofacontainer,forexamplebecauseofthepresenceofan oldlabelorincorrectmarkings;
39、 c) obviousandunusualvariationsareobservedintheconsignment. Suchsamplesshouldbefullyreportedandshouldnotberegardedasacceptablewithoutmutualagreement betweenthepartiesconcerned. 5.1.2 Numberofitemsinconsignment Theleastnumberofcontainers,e.g.drums,tobesampledfromanygivenconsignmentofpreservativemater

43、contents.Allsamplesshouldbestored intheircontainersinacool,darkplacepriortoanalysis. 5.2 Samplingofsolidpreservatives 5.2.1 Samplingdevice Asuitablesamplingdeviceforthepurposeofsamplingthepreservativeinadrumisasamplingspearofinternal diameterapproximately30mmandsufficientlylongtoreachthebottomofthedrum. 5.2.2 Procedure(seeFigure1) Beforesampling,mixthecontentsofthedrumasthoroughlyaspossible.Takegreatcaretominimizethemoisture pickedupbythesampleduringthesampling,mixingandreducingprocesses.Usingthesamplingdevice,takefive samples,onefromthecentre
