2、LEATHER Application This procedure is used to determine the grease content and acidity of genuine leather. Apparatus Required Extraction Apparatus Solvent extraction apparatus (Soxhlet-type) incorporating a reflux condenser and a 300 mL Pyrex extraction flask. Suitable filter thimbles are required.

3、Hot Plate With adjustable heat control. Support Rod and Clamp For holding extraction apparatus. Mechanical Convection Oven Capable of maintaining a temperature of 100 +/- 2 C. Desiccator Containing drying agent (e.g., calcium chloride). Steam Bath For evaporating the solvent. Shaker Mechanical or ma

Scissors or Sharp Knife (Used to cut leather into small pieces). The above apparatus is available from any reputable labora

5、tory equipment supply house. Petroleum Ether Boiling point 30 - 60 C. Note: The petroleum ether used in the extraction shall leave no more than 1 mg of residue per 100 mL when evaporated and then dried to constant weight at 100 +/- 2 C. CAUTION: Low flash point - refer to Industrial Hygiene for heal

6、th and safety comments. Distilled Water Must be freshly boiled and cooled. 10 ppm max dissolved solids (ASTM D 1888). Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/- 2 C and 50 +/- 5 % relative humidity for not

7、less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure Preparation of Sample 1. Obtain scraps of samples used for physical tests, taking a portion of leather of the same size and weight from each specimen to make a composite sample. A total of 10 g

8、 is required for grease and acidity tests. 2. Cut the portions into the smallest pieces possible with scissors or sharp knife (approximately 4 to 7 mm squares). 3. Dry the composite sample in an oven at 100 +/- 2 C to constant weight to remove moisture and store in a desiccator after mixing thorough

9、ly. Procedure - Grease 1. Weigh 10 g of the well-mixed, dried sample to the nearest 0.1 mg and transfer to the extraction thimble. 2. Weigh the 300 mL Pyrex extraction flask to the nearest 0.1 mg and add approximately 225 mL of ether. FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD AN 104-01 Page 3 of 3 Copyright 2001,

10、 Ford Global Technologies, Inc. 3. Assemble the entire apparatus on the hot plate and clamp securely in place. 4. Adjust the temperature of the hot plate so that the thimble is filled with ether in 15 +/- 3 minutes by refluxing, at which time it should then drain. Continue this cycle until 20 extrac

11、tions of the leather with the ether have been made. 5. Disconnect the apparatus and evaporate the ether on a steam bath. (Save the leather for acidity test.) 6. Dry in an oven at 100 +/- 2 C to constant weight, cool in a desiccator and weigh to the nearest 0.1 mg. Increase in Weight of Flask x 100 =

12、 grease (on moisture-free basis) Weight of Sample Procedure - Acidity 1. Weigh 5 g of the leather from the ether extraction and transfer to a glass flask. 2. Add 100 mL of distilled water, freshly boiled and cooled. 3. Stopper the flask, agitate thoroughly with a magnetic or mechanical shaker 4 - 6

13、h. 4. Decant a portion of the extract and measure the pH at 23 +/- 2 C. 5. Report to the nearest 0.1 pH unit. Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities.
