The magnitude of metallic wear on the interior pre-weighed pump components as determined by weight loss over a given time pe

、riod is a method of gauging the lubrication and anti-wear properties of the test fluid. Changes in the fluid, as a result of pumping, are a measure of oxidation of the fluid. Changes in pump components, other than by wear, may be a measure of corrosion. Apparatus Required Hydraulic Pump 75 L/minute

、, Ford Global Technologies, Inc. Preparation of Hydraulic Test Pump Interior Components (Ring and Vanes) Since the test conclusions are based on the weight loss of the test pump ring and vanes after 1000 h operation, it is essential that they are prepared in a prescribed manner for determining their

、 original weight. 1. Remove burrs or other machined irregularities from ring vanes and bushings with an Arkansas hand stone or equivalent. 2. Verify the hardness of the rings and vanes to be HRC 60-63 (harder or softer materials could provide misleading wear data). 3. Submerge ring vanes and bushing

、s in trichloroethane and clean components thoroughly with a medium bristle brush to remove all foreign matter. 4. Submerge components individually in a trichloroethane rinse bath, followed by an acetone rinse and finally a methanol rinse. 5. Allow components to completely air dry before determining

、weight. 6. Weigh ring and vanes set independently on an analytical balance to the nearest 0.0001 g. Note: Bushing weights are not included as part of this test. Preparation of Hydraulic Fluid Test Stand Prior to Scheduled Test 1. Prepare pump for flushing by first immersing a cleaned pump cartridge

、(ring, vanes, rotor and bushings) designated for flushing into a container filled with fluid to be tested. 2. After flush cartridge is thoroughly saturated, insert it into test pump. Reassemble pump according to manufacturers procedure. 3. Install a 10 micron replaceable pleated paper filter element

、 into retainer (see diagram). 4. Fill reservoir with 75 L of fluid scheduled for test. 5. Open pump full-flow inlet valve and allow fluid to flow from reservoir to pump inlet. 6. Loosen in-line sight indicator glass located at pump inlet. Fluid will replace entrained air escaping through loose sight

、 glass opening. Manually rotate pump shaft to draw fluid into the pump inlet before tightening the sight glass. 7. Electrically jog the electrical drive motor until all entrained air is purged from the system. FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD BJ 001-03 Page 4 of 6 Copyright 2001, Ford Global Technologies

、, Inc. 8. Start pump and allow system to flush about two h with relief valve set at 2.8 MPa. If the system was previously contaminated by a highly oxidized fluid, a longer flush cycle or second fluid change is required. 9. Drain flush fluid from reservoir and carefully remove all residual fluid from

、 reservoir that may exist. Remove flush cartridge and 10 micron replaceable filter element. Filters are not used during the 1000 h fluid evaluation process. 1000 Hour Fluid Qualifying Test Procedure 1. Fill reservoir from drum (through a 10 micron in-depth filter) with 75 L of test fluid. Filtering prevents contaminants existing in fluid s

、ource from being transferred to the reservoir. 4. Before rotating pump, provide sufficient time to allow air entrained in the reservoir fluid fill to rise to the surface and disperse. 5. Open pump inlet full flow valve and allow fluid to drain from the reservoir to the pump inlet. 6. Loosen in-line

Manually rotate pump shaft to draw fluid into pump inlet before securing sight gage glass. 7. Electrically jog the drive motor until all possible residual air has been purged from the syst

、em. 8. Start pump and allow system to operate about two h with relief valve set pressure of 2.8 MPa. 9. Increase relieve valve set pressure in 1.4 MPa increments at 30 minute intervals until 6 MPa test pressure is attained. As the pressure is increased, a corresponding rise in fluid temperature will

、 occur. Prior to reaching the fluid test temperature, adjust the heat exchanger control to commence operation. Adjust the heat exchanger control as necessary to maintain specified fluid temperature at set test pressure. 10. Operate system uninterrupted for 1000 h or until operational difficulties di

Approximately one h prior to terminating pump test, remove reservoir cover plate and agitate fluid by stirring to activate oxidized or metallic solids that may have acc

、umulated throughout the test period. 12. When testing is terminated, deactivate the pump and close the full flow valve, restricting flow from the reservoir. Disassemble pump and remove bushings, rotor, vanes and ring. A 4 litre sample can now be retrieved from the reservoir through the open-ended pu

、mp housing. This sample is compared with the “as received“ 4 litre sample secured prior to testing. 13. Drain reservoir and record its condition as to accumulation of sludge, metallic or other foreign matter. 14. Examine pump components for evidence of deterioration due to corrosion or erosion. 15.

、Clean and prepare interior pump components for determination of weight loss according to procedure described in “Preparation of Hydraulic Test Pump Interior Components“. Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities.
