SANS 5808, Pesticides General conditions and equipment for the rearing and handling of test insects. 3 Rearing conditions Maintain the rearing conditions prescribed in SANS 5808. 4 Rearing equipment 4.1 Cardboard shelters, V-shaped. 4.2 Containers, disposable plastics containe
9、rs of approximate height 20 mm and diameter 60 mm. 4.3 Rearing containers and lids, type A rearing containers and type A rearing container lids as described in SANS 5808. 5 Rearing media Use the following media in separate containers (see 4.2): a) brown sugar; b) milk powder; c) dried meat; d) groun
10、d dog biscuits; SANS 5812:2008 Edition 2 2 e) cotton wool, saturated with water; and f) cotton wool, saturated with a 5 % sugar solution. 6 Procedure 6.1 Place the rearing media (see clause 5) and the cardboard shelters (see 4.1) in a rearing container (see 4.3). 6.2 Place in the rearing container a colony of healthy ants consisting of workers, eggs, and a few queens. 6.3 Replenish the rearing media regularly. 6.4 Rear new colonies by repeating the procedure in 6.1 to 6.3 (inclusive) for each colony.
