、HISTORICAL NOTE Doors for protection of openings in walls and partitions have been subjected to re-exposure tests by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. for a period of more than 100 years. Standard construction of wood-core, tin-clad re doors was rst formally recognized by the National Fire Protection A

Fire-testing of other types of doors and shutters by UL has been conducted over a correspondingly long period. Study by a long-continued NFPA committee, of results o

、CTION OR DISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL INTRODUCTION 1 Scope 1.1 These methods of re tests are applicable to door assemblies of various materials and types of construction for use in wall openings to retard the passage of re. 1.2 Tests made in conformity with these test methods register per

、formance during the test exposure; and such tests shall not be construed as determining compliance for use after exposure to re. 1.3 It is the intent that tests made in conformity with these test methods develop data to enable regulatory bodies to determine the compliance of door assemblies for use

、in locations where re resistance of a specied duration is required. 1.4 These methods are intended to evaluate the ability of a door assembly to remain in an opening during a predetermined test exposure. 1.5 The tests expose a specimen to a standard re exposure controlled to achieve specied temperat

、ures throughout a specied time period, followed by the application of a specied standard re hose stream. The exposure, however, is not representative of all re conditions, which vary with changes in the amount, nature, and distribution of re loading, ventilation, compartment size and conguration, an

、d heat sink characteristics of the compartment. It does, however, provide a relative measure of re performance of door assemblies under these specied re exposure conditions. 1.6 Any variation from the construction or conditions that are tested is capable of substantially changing the performance cha

、racteristics of the assembly. 1.7 The methods do not provide the following: a) Full information as to performance of all door assemblies in walls constructed of materials other than those tested. b) Evaluation of the degree by which the door assembly contributes to the risk of re by generation of sm

、oke, toxic gases, or other products of combustion. c) A temperature limit on the unexposed side of the door assembly. d) A limit on the number of openings intended in glazed areas or of the number and size of lateral openings between the door and frame. e) Measurement of the degree of control or lim

、itation of the passage of smoke or products of combustion through the door assembly. CONTROL OF FIRE TESTS 3 Time-Temperature Curve 3.1 The re exposure of door assemblies shall be controlled to conform to the applicable portion of the standard time-temperature curve shown in Figure 3.1. The points on the curve that determine its character are: a) 1000F (538C) at 5 mi

、nutes, b) 1300F (704C) at 10 minutes, c) 1462F (795C) at 20 minutes, d) 1550F (843C) at 30 minutes, e) 1638F (892C) at 45 minutes, f) 1700F (927C) at 1 hour, g) 1792F (978C) at 1-1/2 hours, h) 1850F (1010C) at 2 hours, i) 1925F (1052C) at 3 hours, and j) 2000F (1093C) at 4 hours. 3.2 For a more deta

、s of the test exposure shall be the average temperature obtained by a minimum of three thermocouples and no fewer one thermocouple per 15 square feet of test assembly exposed to the furnace symmetrically disposed and distributed to show the temperature near all parts of the test assembly, see Figure

、 4.1. The thermocouple assembly is to consist of a thermocouple protected by a sealed porcelain tube having a 3/4 inch (19.1 mm) outside diameter and 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) wall thickness or, a base-metal thermocouple, protected by: (1) sealed 1/2-inch (12.7-mm) wrought-steel or wrought-iron pipe of stan

、dard weight or (2) Inconel 600 series schedule 40 pipe (0.8 inch OD / 0.6 inch ID, 20 mm OD / 15 mm ID). The end of the thermocouple assembly is to be initially located 6 inches (152 mm) from the exposed face of the test assembly or from the construction in which the door assembly is installed. Duri

、ng the re exposure, if the movement of the test sample causes the samples distance to the end of the thermocouple assembly to vary, the end of the thermocouple assembly is to be reset to 6 inches (152 mm) at intervals not exceeding 10 minutes during the rst 30 minutes of the test. Thereafter, the in

、tervals are to be increased to not more than 30 minutes. Revised 4.1 effective February 16, 2018 4.2 The temperatures are to be recorded at intervals not exceeding 1 minute. 4.3 The accuracy of the furnace control is to be such that the area under the time-temperature curve, obtained by averaging th

、e results from the thermocouple readings, is within 10 percent of the corresponding area under the standard time-temperature curve for re tests of 1 hour or less duration or during the rst hour of multi-hour tests, 7.5 percent in the rst 2 hours of multi-hour tests, and within 5 percent for tests ex

、February 16, 2018 4A.1 Furnace pressures are to be read at intervals not exceeding 1 minute. 4A.2 The neutral plane within the test furnace shall be established prior to the initiation of the re test. Such pressure shall remain constant or increase to maintain the neutral plane upon initiation of th

、e re test. Control of the furnace pressure is to be established beginning no later than 5 minutes after the start of the test and is to be maintained throughout the remainder of the re test. 4A.3 The vertical pressure distribution within the furnace is to be measured by at least two pressure-sensing

、 probes separated by a minimum vertical distance of 6 ft (1.8 m) inside the furnace for furnaces with a minimum vertical dimension of 10 ft (3.05 m). Minimum vertical separation between pressure probes is to be reduced proportionally for furnaces with an internal dimension less than 10 ft (3.05 m).

、4A.4 The pressure-sensing probes are to be as shown in either Figure 4A.1 or Figure 4A.2. The probes are to be located so that the center line of the sensing holes are positioned 6 1 in (152 2.5 mm) from the surface of the exposed face of the test assembly and a minimum of 18 in (457 mm) from the ed

、ges of the furnace. The probes are to be positioned horizontally in the furnace without a change in vertical elevation of the probes or tubing within the furnace. This is generated text for gtxt.
