3、Subject: Open Type SPDsDECISION:1.1 These requirements cover enclosed and open-type Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) designed forrepeated limiting of transient voltage surges as specified in the standard on 50 or 60 Hz power circuits notexceeding 1000 V and designated as follows:Type 1 Permanently co

4、nnected SPDs intended for installation between the secondary of theservice transformer and the line side of the service equipment overcurrent device, as well asthe load side, including watt-hour meter socket enclosures and Molded Case SPDs intended tobe installed without an external overcurrent prot

5、ective device.Type 2 Permanently connected SPDs intended for installation on the load side of the serviceequipment overcurrent device; including SPDs located at the branch panel and Molded CaseSPDs.Type 3 Point of utilization SPDs, installed at a minimum conductor length of 10 meters (30feet) from t

6、he electrical service panel to the point of utilization, for example cord connected,direct plug-in, receptacle type and SPDs installed at the utilization equipment being protected.See marking in 80.3. The distance (10 meters) is exclusive of conductors provided with or usedto attach SPDs.Type 4 Comp

7、onent Assemblies Component assembly consisting of one or more Type 5components together with a disconnect (integral or external) or a means of complying with thelimited current tests in 44.4.Type 1, 2, 3 Component Assemblies Consists of a Type 4 component assembly with internalor external short circ

8、uit protection.Type 5 Discrete component surge suppressors, such as MOVs that may be mounted on aPWB, connected by its leads or provided within an enclosure with mounting means and wiringterminations.3.11.1 ENCLOSED SPD A SPD provided with a complete enclosure in accordance with the constructionrequ

9、irements of this standard.3.25.1 OPEN-TYPE SPD A Type 1, 2 or 3 SPD, with an incomplete or partial enclosure and with fieldwiring terminals and/or leads, suitable for field installation, in accordance with the National Electrical Code,ANSI/NFPA 70, within a suitable enclosure.UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL

10、 NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL6.6 Unless specified otherwise, open-type SPDs shall comply with the applicable requirements for theSPD Type, as specified in this standard.7.4 Open-type SPDs7.4.1 Any part of an open-type SPD intended to be installed

11、through an opening in or as part of anenclosure shall comply with the Enclosure requirements for the SPD Type.14.1.1.5 An SPD provided with integral pigtail leads intended for connection in the field to a power supplycircuit conductor shall be provided with a conduit connection means that is accepta

12、ble in accordance withthe National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA-70.Exception: Conduit connection means are not required for open-type SPDs.14.1.1.8 A permanently-connected SPD shall have a field-wiring terminal, wiring lead, conduit fitting, aknockout or other opening in the enclosure and wire bending

13、 space, for the connection of a wiring systemin accordance with the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA-70 and acceptable for the purposeException No. 1: An enclosure need not have provision for the connection of a wiring system, such as aconduit hub, a knockout or a fitting, if it is intended to be

14、 drilled or punched in the field to accommodatea wiring system and is provided with appropriate installation instructions.Exception No. 2: Conduit fittings, knockouts, other openings in the enclosure and wire bending space, forthe connection of a wiring system are not required for open-type SPDs.18.

15、9 For open-type SPDs, the spacings between live parts and metal parts that may be grounded, suchas the heads of mounting screws that pass through an insulating panel, shall be judged as if they weregrounded parts within an enclosure. The spacing between uninsulated live parts and the surface on whic

16、hthe device may be mounted is to be judged as if the mounting surface were part of an enclosure.39.16 Open-type SPDs, subjected to the Temperature Test, shall be mounted in an enclosure consideredrepresentative of the intended use. The maximum enclosure dimensions are to be determined by one ofthe f

17、ollowing methods:a) 150 percent of the dimensions of the device that is, length, width, and height;b) Dimensions needed to meet the wire-bending space specified in UL 508, Table 6.8;c) The intended enclosure, such as a standard outlet box; ord) The intended enclosure, which may be larger than indica

18、ted in 39.16(a) (c) provided thesize is marked on the device, detailed in the installation instructions or provided on a separatestuffer sheet. (See 80.35).44.1.11 Pass criteria During and following the tests described in 44.2.1 44.4.2, the following conditionsshall not result:a) Emission of flame,

19、molten metal, glowing or flaming particles through any openings(preexisting or created as a result of the test) in the product.b) Charring, glowing, or flaming of the supporting surface, tissue paper, or cheesecloth.c) Ignition of the enclosureSTANDARD NUMBER: UL 1449 -2-UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT

For open-type SPDsonly, this applies to parts intended

21、to be installed through an opening in or as part of anenclosure.e) Loss of structural integrity to a degree that the equipment collapses or experiences suchdisplacement of parts that there is a risk of short-circuiting or grounding of current-carryingparts.f) Opening (external to the SPD) of the sma

22、llest gauge wire specified in 44.2.2.61.1.1 A Type 3 SPD employing a metallic or non-metallic enclosure and a Type 1 or Type 2 SPDemploying a non-metallic enclosure is to be subjected to the impact tests described in 61.2.1 61.4.2without any occurrence of the following:a) Creation of any openings in

23、 the enclosure that results in accessibility of live parts, whenjudged in accordance with Accessibility of Live Parts, Section 13.b) Any condition that might affect the safe mechanical performance of the SPD.c) Any other condition that increases the risk of electric shock.Exception: Impact Testing i

24、s not required for the housing of open-type SPDs not intended to function asenclosures.79.5 Status or alarm circuit connections provided within SPDs shall be provided with the followingelectrical ratings: voltage (volts), ac power frequency (Hz) or direct current (dc), current (amperes), typeof load

25、 and, if applicable, Class 2.80.1 An SPD shall be plainly and permanently marked with the following information:a) The name of the manufacturer or other descriptive marking by which the organizationresponsible for the product can be identified;b) A distinctive catalog number or equivalent designatio

26、n;c) SPD Type (1,2,3). Type 1, 2, 3 Component Assemblies shall be marked as Type 1, 2 or 3SPDs;d) Electrical ratings per Section 79;e) Nominal Discharge Current (In) Rating (79.1);f) Maximum Continuous Operating Voltage Rating (MCOV) (79.1);g) Voltage Protection Rating (VPR) (79.2)h) Date or period

27、of manufacture not exceeding any three consecutive months which is able tobe abbreviated or in a nationally accepted code;i) Short Circuit Current Rating (SCCR) (80.11 and 80.12);j) Other specific markings as required in 80.2 80.26.STANDARD NUMBER: UL 1449 -3-UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED F

28、OR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULException No. 1: Permanently connected receptacle-type SPDs shall have all the markings indicatedabove, except that the catalog number and voltage protection levels are able to be marked on theindividual shipping carton.Exception No. 2

29、: Molded Case SPDs shall have all the markings indicated above, except that the voltageprotection rating (VPR) may be marked on the individual shipping carton. Location of required markingsshall be in accordance with the Location Categories in UL 489, Tables 9.1 and 13.1.Exception No. 3: Open-type S

30、PDs shall have all the markings indicated above, except that the voltageprotection rating (VPR) may be marked on the individual shipping carton, installation instructions or stuffersheet.80.6 A connection diagram for field wiring connections of a permanently connected SPD, shall be markedon the SPD.

31、Exception No. 1: A connection diagram on the SPD is not required for a permanently connected two-wiredevice provided with integral leads.Exception No. 2: A connection diagram, for field wiring connections of a permanently-connected SPDprovided with a cover or hinged door intended to be opened during

32、 installation, may be provided in apocket attached to the inside cover of the enclosure.Exception No. 3: A connection diagram may be marked on a stuffer sheet or on the individual carton of apermanently connected receptacle type SPD.Exception No. 4: A connection diagram may be marked on the individu

33、al shipping carton, installationinstructions or stuffer sheet of an open-type SPD.80.9 An SPD rated for use in an elevated, 40C (104F) or higher, ambient air temperature, see 79.4, shallbe marked to indicate the maximum rated ambient air temperature.80.12 Type 2 SPDs and Permanently-Connected Type 3

34、 (other than receptacle type) SPDs intended tobe installed at the utilization equipment being protected requiring an external fuse or circuit breaker asspecified in 44.1.14 shall be marked in accordance with 80.11 and, in conjunction with that marking shallalso be marked When Protected by _a_ Class

35、Fuses rated: _b_and minimum c_, Volts and/orWhen protected by a circuit breaker rated: _b _ and _ minimum c_, Volts.a) Class CC, CD, G, H, J, L, R, T or K fuse. Reference to Class H or Class K fuses shall notappear in the marking if the indicated rms symmetrical fault current is greater than 10,000

36、A.b) Current rating of fuse or circuit breaker.c) Nominal system voltage.Exception: For other than Molded Case and open-type SPDs, the marking may be on a separate sheet orin the installation instruction if there is not sufficient room on the device for the marking. Molded CaseSPDs requiring an exte

37、rnal fuse or circuit breaker, shall be marked as detailed above. Location of requiredmarkings for Molded Case SPDs shall be in accordance with the Location Categories in UL 489, Tables9.1 and 13.1.80.35 SPDs provided with terminals for connection of field-wiring shall have the following markingsadja

39、 “Sol”) or Stranded(“or Str”) or with both markings as applicable;d) Al Only or Use Aluminum Conductors Only if the terminal is acceptable only forconnection to aluminum wire; or Cu/Al or Use Copper or Aluminum Conductors or UseCopper, Copper-Clad Aluminum, or Aluminum Conductors if the terminal is

40、acceptable forconnection to either copper or aluminum wire; or Cu Only or USE COPPER OR COPPER-CLAD ALUMINUM CONDUCTORS if the terminal is acceptable for connection to either copperor copper-clad aluminum wire;e) If a terminal is acceptable for the connection of more than one conductor in the sameop

41、ening and is intended for such use, the marking shall indicate the proper connection; andf) Conductor strip length.Exception: A field-wiring terminal intended only for the connection of a control circuit conductor (i.e. astatus circuit) is not required to be marked with a value of tightening torque

42、when tested in accordancewith the applicable requirements in UL 486A-486B or UL 486E, with a value of tightening torque of 7pound-inches (0.8 Nm).80.36 An open-type SPD intended for use in an enclosure, larger than indicated in 39.16(a) (c), shall bemarked with the intended enclosure dimensions.Exce

43、ption: This marking is able to be provided on a separate sheet or in the installation instructions whenthere is not sufficient room on the device for the marking.80.37 SPDs provided with status or alarm circuit connections shall be marked with the following electricalratings as applicable to the sta

44、tus or alarm circuit connections: voltage (volts), ac power frequency (Hz)or direct current (dc), current (amperes), type of load and, if applicable, Class 2.Exception No. 1: If the type of load is general purpose, a type of load marking is not required.Exception No. 2: This marking is able to be pr

45、ovided on a separate sheet or in the installation instructionswhen there is not sufficient room on the device for the marking.80.38 Open-type SPDs shall be marked Installation within an enclosure required, see installationinstructions or the equivalent.81.1 An instruction manual or the equivalent sh

46、all be provided, shall only reference those applications thathave been evaluated, and shall include the following:a) Instructions for installation: Instructions for permanently wired devices shall include the wiregauge sizes, the ampacity of the circuit the device is intended for use on, and the int

47、ernal wiringmethods showing location and routing. The instructions shall state: “The conductors used toconnect the SPD to the line or bus and to ground shall not be any longer than necessary andshall avoid unnecessary bends” or similar wording.STANDARD NUMBER: UL 1449 -5-UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT

For open-type SPDs, instructions specify that the SPD is intendedfor installation within a suitable enclosure in accordance with the National Electrical Code,ANSI/NFPA 70.c) An explanation of t

49、he purpose and function of any indicator (lights, audio indicators, andsimilar indicators) features employed on the SPD.d) The interrupting rating of any required external circuit breaker or the short-circuit current levelof any required external fuse.e) The following statement shall be required for SPDs intended for use on ungrounded powersystems: Caution Ungrounded power systems are inherently unstable and can produceexcessively high line-to-ground voltages during certain fault conditions.
