3、 Clarification of the Accessibility Requirements for the Bottom of anApplianceDECISION:6.9 The requirements in Clauses 6.1 and 6.2 apply to the back of a freestanding appliance and to the backand sides of a recessed appliance. They do not apply to the bottom of a freestanding or recessedappliance if
4、 the front, sides, and back of the appliance extend substantially to the surface upon which theappliance rests. For the bottom of a freestanding or recessed appliance, if the front, sides, and back ofthe appliance can be positioned no more than 38.1 mm above the surface upon which the appliance rest
5、s,the tip of the probe, illustrated in Figure 1, shall be inserted up to 150 mm inside the plane of the openingcreated between the bottom edge of the appliance and the supporting surface. If the distance betweenthe bottom edge of the appliance and supporting surface is greater than 38.1 mm accessibi
6、lity through theopening created between the bottom of the appliance and the supporting surface shall be evaluated inaccordance with Table 1.RATIONALE FOR DECISION:This Certification Requirement Decision is intended to clarify the accessibility requirements for the bottomof an appliance, and document
7、s present practice in the application of these requirements.Accessibility via the bottom of the appliance to parts that may present a risk of fire, electric shock or injuryto persons is dependent upon the distance from the bottom edge of the front, sides and back of theclothes washer to the supporti
8、ng surface. Clause 6.9 presently uses the phrase “extends substantially tothe floor”, which is not clear and may lead to inconsistent application of this requirements. This clarificationto Clause 6.9 is intended to: Clarify the maximum distance between the bottom edge of the appliance and the suppor
9、tingsurface that is considered to be extended substantially to the floor; Address accessibility of live or moving parts near the outer edges of the bottom by applyingthe accessibility probe up to 150 mm from the plane of the opening, and Define the applicable accessibility requirements when the maxi
