、ubject: An additional testing option includedDECISION:There is currently one method to conduct an odor panel evaluation for efficacy. Upon evaluation, and inreponse to a query about a second method, , we believe that a second method should be included.Proposed Amendment to UL 2796PRODUCT PERFORMANCE

、 TESTING7A.1 Products shall demonstrate their ability to control odors in accordance with one of the following testprocedures:a) Odor control products must perform as well as at least two conventional, functionallyequivalent products that are available in North America when tested against Standard G

、or control products only.RATIONALE FOR DECISION:The original standard CCD-107 only permitted a single test method to demonstrate efficacy. Upon reviewof this additional ASTM method (E679), it is also considered sufficient to demonstrate efficacy and resultsfrom this method should also be acceptable.

、 A comparison of the two ASTM methods is below. As for ASTM E679 vs E1593, some of the key differences are below.E679 makes a series of forced 3-way choices (among control, test and blank) to establish a detectionthreshold and then a recognition threshold (serial challenges of ascending concentration

、). The productpresentations are adapted for use with small volumes of air or liquid which would seem appropriate formicrobial odor control products (drain cleaners?). If the recognition threshold of the control is much lowerthan the test material, then the odor control product would seem to work. Ho

、w much difference do weneed to see though between the product and the control to deem the product effective?UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULE1593 uses multiple chambers that are dosed and then assessors enter and rate the odor.

、 The facility forthis would be much more involved (walk-in chambers vs flasks). The time needed would be greater as wellsince the method recommends that only 1 assessor be in a chamber at a time whereas more than oneassessor could be sniffing a set of flasks at a time. The stats differ as well. E1593

、 says to use any of several procedures (examples are given). E679 usesthe geometric mean of the thresholds (binomial data: yes or no). E679 can be used to measure thresholddifferences between 2 samples (test and control) as well as establish threshold for a single material.Summary It seems that the
