、PE 1.1. This standard practice describes the testing required to determine the sealant grade (SG) of a hot-poured asphalt crack sealant according to MP 25, Table 1. It presents two approaches. In the first, the SG of an unknown hot-poured asphalt crack sealant is determined. In the second, the nomin
、al SG of a hot-poured asphalt crack sealant is verified. It also provides an estimate of the time required to complete a single test sequence. 1.2. This standard practice may involve hazardous material, operations, and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns a
、ssociated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practice and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 2. The homogenized sample of hot-poured asphalt c
、rack sealant obtained according to ASTM D5167 is tested to determine viscosity after 1 hr 10 minutes at the installation temperature recommended by the manufacturer (T 366) and sealant flow and deformation (TP 126). 3.2. The hot-poured asphalt crack sealant is aged in the vacuum oven (T 367), and th
、e residue is tested to determine the creep stiffness (S) and average creep rate of the log creep stiffness versus log time relationship at 240 s (T 368), extendibility in direct tension (T 369), and maximum adhesion load (T 370). 3.3. Based on these test results, the hot-poured asphalt crack sealant
、 is graded according to MP 25, Table 1. 4. SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1. This practice describes the testing required for grading or verifying the SG of a hot-poured asphalt crack sealant according to MP 25, Table 1. 5. ESTIMATED TIME NECESSARY FOR TESTING 5.1. For both testing and verification, if the
、analysis is started at the beginning of a morning work shift, all testing and analysis should be completed during the afternoon of the next day. This schedule provides the 16 h needed for conditioning of hot-poured asphalt crack sealant material in the vacuum oven. Samples can be aged and analyzed i
、n parallel, and the productivity of the laboratory thus increased. However, for the purpose of this document, analysis of a single hot-poured asphalt crack sealant will be discussed. 6. TEST PROCEDURE FOR GRADING AN UNKNOWN HOT-POURED ASPHALT CRACK SEALANT 6.1. Prepare samples and test specimens usi
、ng the procedures specified in the applicable test methods. In the case where the grade of a hot-poured asphalt crack sealant is unknown, approximately 550 g of unaged hot-poured asphalt crack sealant is required to complete the tests with the necessary replicates. 6.2. Homogenize the hot-poured asp
、halt crack sealant according to ASTM D5167. Homogenize a sufficient amount of hot-poured asphalt crack sealant depending on the type and number of tests to be performed. Note 1Four crack sealant bending b eam rheometer (CSBBR) beam specimens requiring Vacuum Oven Aged (VOA) residue are needed at eac
、h test temperature. In addition, at least six crack sealant direct tension (CSDT) specimens and six crack sealant adhesion test (CSAT) specimens requiring VOA residue will also be needed at each test temperature. A minimum of two test temperatures will be required. This testing will utilize approxim

、alant type. 6.4. If the homogenized hot-poured asphalt crack sealant does not meet MP 25 requirements for the test in Section 6.3, the hot-poured asphalt crack sealant will not satisfy the specification for any SG, and no further testing is required. 6.5. Perform the DSR test (TP 126) on the homogen
、ized hot-poured asphalt crack sealant beginning at 64C, and increase or decrease the test temperature at 6.0C increments until a value for flow coefficient 4 kPa.s and a value for shear thinning 0.7 is obtained. The highest test temperature where the value for flow coefficient 4 kPa.s and a value fo
、r shear thinning 0.7 are obtained determines the starting high temperature SG grade. Note 3For example, if flow coefficient is 3.4 kPa.s and shear thinning is 0.63 at 70C and flow coefficient is 4.1 kPa.s and shear thinning is 0.84 at 64C, the starting grade of the hot-poured asphalt crack sealant i
、s SG 64-xx. 6.6. Age a sufficient quantity of homogenized hot-poured asphalt crack sealant material in the vacuum oven (T 367). Quantities can be estimated based on the number of test samples needed as indicated in Note 1. Note 4Testing for Sections 6.1 through 6.6 can be completed during t he first
、 day of testing. This schedule allows further testing to begin on the second day after VOA is completed. 6.7. At the conclusion of the VOA procedure (T 368), including aging and combining the hot-poured asphalt crack sealant residue, prepare four CSBBR specimens for each test temperature according t
、o TP 86. Retain sufficient residue to prepare at least six CSDT specimens or six CSAT specimens for each test temperature. 6.8. Perform the CSBBR test (T 368) on the VOA hot-poured asphalt crack sealant residue beginning at 22C, and increase or decrease the test temperature at 6.0C increments until
、a value for creep stiffness (S) 25 MPa at 240 seconds and a value for average creep rate 0.31 is obtained. The lowest test temperature where the value for creep stiffness (S) 25 MPa and a value for average creep rate 0.31 determines the initial low temperature for SG grade. Test fresh CSBBR specimen
、s at each temperature. 6.9. Perform the CSDT test (T 369) on the VOA hot-poured asphalt crack sealant residue beginning at the initial low temperature SG grade determined by CSBBR test (T 368). The extendibility at the test temperature should meet the requirements of MP 25. If the extendibility is l
、ower than the threshold, then increase the temperature by 6.0C and test the VOA hot-poured asphalt crack sealant residue again using the CSDT test. Continue increasing temperature increments until the extendibility is equal to or higher than the threshold defined by MP 25. 6.10. Perform the CSAT tes
、t (T 370) on the VOA hot-poured asphalt crack sealant residue beginning at the low temperature SG grade determined by CSBBR test (T 368). Continue increasing temperature increments until the adhesion load is equal to or higher than the threshold defined by MP 25. If the adhesion load criteria is not
、 satisfied the hot-poured asphalt crack sealant will fail to satisfy the requirements of the low temperature grade. 6.11. Using the results of Section 6.8 through 6.10, determine the final sealant grade (SG) of the hot-poured asphalt crack sealant. 2017 by the American Association of State Highway a

、alant type. 7.4. If the homogenized hot-poured asphalt crack sealant does not meet MP 25 requirements for the test in Section 7.3, the hot-poured asphalt crack sealant will not satisfy the specification for any SG, and no further testing is required. 7.5. Perform the DSR test (TP 126) on the homogen
、ized hot-poured asphalt crack sealant at the test temperature indicated by the high-temperature grade designation. For example, test a SG 64-28 hot-poured asphalt crack sealant at 64C. The value for flow coefficient must be 4 kPa.s and a value for shear thinning must be 0.7 to meet the requirements
、of MP 25. Note 7This step verifies the startin g SG grade. For example, if a SG 58-34 is tested at 58C and the value for flow coefficient 4 kPa.s and a value for shear thinning 0.7, the high-temperature grade designation for the hot-poured asphalt crack sealant is verified to be SG 58-xx. Note 8If t
、he hot-poured asphalt crack s ealant fails to meet the requirement of MP 25, Table 1 for the grade designated, it may be treated as a hot-poured asphalt crack sealant of unknown grade and tested according to Section 6, or the testing may be stopped because the grade was not verified. 7.6. Age a suff
