、 is not part of this Standard.) This FOTP is from TTA Standards Proposal No. 3541 I formulated under the cognizance of TIA FO-6.7, Subcommittee on Fiber Optic Cable. This FOTP is part of the series of test procedures included within Recommended Standard EIATlA-455. NOTE - This FOTP was originally pu

、e hygroscopic nature of the materials contained within the cable. The amount of water wicking is measured in terms of a) the weight of water absorbed by the cable sample and b) the distance from the end of the cable that the water has migrated due to wicking action. 1.2 Scope This procedure is gener

、ally not intended for use on cables containing water swellable tapes, powders, or yarns. Swellable materials must absorb water in order to swell and build a block to further penetration of water. This test method may be used to look at the water wicking characteristics of such cables, however it mus

、t be understood that a certain amount of water absorption is necessary for such cables to pass water penetration requirements. 2 Normative references Test or inspection requirements may include, but are not limited to, the following references: EIA/TIA-455-A, Standard test procedures for fiber optic

、 fibers, cables, transducers, sensors, connecting and teminafing devices, and other fiber optic components. 1 lT-455-39B -7 J 3 Apparatus 3.1 Use a test tube, or similar vessel, suitable to accept the diameter of cable to be tested. 3.2 Use a scale, balance, or platform, accurate to 2 0.05 mg (2 x I

、O4 oz). 3.3 Use a dye solution, consisting of: Distilled wate; Sod iu m Fluorescein 2 liters (0.52 gal.) 4 g (0.14 oz.) Note 1 - The prepared solution shall be kept stoppered and a fresh solution shall be prepared every 30 days. A new portion of the solution shall be used for each test conducted. .

、Note 2 - Alternative dyes are permitted if they are ultraviolet detectable and it can be demonstrated that they can be carried in the wicking water. 3.4 Use an ultraviolet light source to detect the presence of the dye solution in the cable sample. The light source shall operate in the absorbance wa

、velength range for the dye solution being used. 4 Sampling and specimens The test specimen shall be a representative sample of the fiber optic cable. The specimen shall be 150 5 1.5 mm (6 5 0.1 inches) long, unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification. Trim the lower (immersed) cable end

、so that it is flat and perpendicular to the cable axis. If necessary, due to the construction of the particular cable under test, prepare the upper end of the sample to ensure that the inner portion(s) of the cable will not fall out when the sample is suspended vertically (see clause 5.2). 2 STDOEIA

、 TIAIEIA-455-39B-ENGL 1999 3234600 Ob21977 548 W TMIA-455-3 9B 5 Procedure Unless otherwise specified, wicking of an optical fiber cable shall be determined using the procedures specified below. 5.1 A clean specimen shall be weighed accurately to the nearest 0.1 mg (4 x 10“ oz.) for samples which we

、igh less than 25 g (0.06 Ib) and to the nearest 1 mg (4 x oz.) for samples which weigh 25 g (0.06 Ib) or more. NOTE - Excess filling compound from the end of the cable can be removed before the sample is weighed. 5.2 The weighed specimen shall be suspended vertically with the lower 50 mm (2 inches)

、immersed in the dye solution in an open test tube or other suitable vessel. The specimen shall remain in this configuration, placed in a draft-free area, for a period of 24 hours. The test conditions shall be standard atmospheric conditions as outlined in ElAilIA-455-A. 5.3 At the end of the test pe

、riod, the specimen shall be removed from the dye solution. Ensure that no cable filling compound has been left in the test tube. Upon removal, the outer surface of the specimen shall be wiped free of excess moisture using a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. Care should be taken not to wipe off any cable

、filling compound while wiping off the excess moisture as this will affect the weight measurements. After wiping, and within five minutes after removal from the solution, the specimen shall be weighed again to the nearest 0.1 mg (4 x IO“ oz.) for samples which weigh less than 25 g (0.06 Ib) and to th

、e nearest I mg (4 x lo5 oz.) for samples which weigh 25 g (0.06 Ib) or more. 5.4 Immediately after the final weighing, the specimen shall be observed under ultra- violet light to determine, to the nearest 1 mm (0.04 inch) the distance the dye solution has traveled in the specimen by wicking action f

、or each cable component. To facilitate observation, the layer(s) of jacket shall be removed from the specimen and the entire cable dissected working from the upper end of the specimen. 3 STD-EIA TIA/EIA-455-39B-ENGL 1999 = 3234600 Ob2L578 484 TIA/EIA-455-39B 6 Calculations or interpretation of resul
