Scope*1.1 This specification covers aluminumbase and zincbasemaster alloys used to make zinc die-casting alloys. Alloycompositions specified
3、 for aluminumbase master alloys (hard-eners) are designated as shown in Table 1. Alloy compositionsspecified for the zinc-base master alloys are designated asshown in Table 2.1.2 Aluminum alloy hardeners are added to Special HighGrade zinc (per Specification B6) in the proper alloying ratios,as show
4、n in Table 1, to produce zinc alloys for die casting.1.3 Zinc-base master alloy is added to Special High Gradezinc (per Specification B6) in the proper alloying ratio, asshown in Table 3, to produce zinc alloy for die casting.1.4 Master alloys may be supplied in the form of shot, bar,ingot or jumbo

Materials and Manufacture5.1 The material may be made by any suitable process.5.2 The material covered by this specification shall be ofuniform quality and shall be free of dross, flux, or otherharmful c
18、ontamination. Also, if the material is in shot form, itshall be sound, uniform in size, and free of a heavily oxidizedsurface coating, stringers, and moisture.6. Chemical Requirements6.1 LimitsThe material shall conform to the requirementsas to chemical composition prescribed in Table 1 or Table 2.I
19、naddition there are weight limits for zinc-base master alloyswhen supplied in jumbo ingot form. No harmful effects have ever been noted due to the presence of these elements in up to these concentrations in die casting alloysand, therefore,

32、wing shall apply:6.2.2.1 Aluminum-base master alloysOne sample shall betaken for each 6000 lb (2722 kg) or fraction thereof. When itis deemed necessary, a sample may be taken from each melt of500 lb (227 kg) or more of the alloy.6.2.2.2 Zinc-base master alloysOne sample shall be takenfor each 10 000
33、 lb (4536 kg) or fraction thereof. Whennecessary, a sample may be taken from each melt of 1000 lb(454 kg) or more.6.2.3 A sample may consist of an ingot or bar. In the case ofmetal in shot form, a small representative lot of the shot maybe melted and poured to form a thin chill-cast bar approxi-mate
34、ly14 in. (6.4 mm) thick or a suitable spectrographic moldsample. In the case of a jumbo ingot, the sample may be a castspectrographic specimen taken from the same pour used to castthe jumbo ingots.6.3 Methods of SamplingSamples for determination ofchemical composition shall be taken in accordance wi
35、th one ofthe following methods:6.3.1 Samples for chemical analysis shall be taken from thematerial by drilling, sawing, milling, turning, or clipping arepresentative piece or pieces to obtain a weight of preparedsample not less than 100 g. Sampling shall be in accordancewith Practice E88.6.3.2 By ag
36、reement between the producer and the purchaser,other methods of sampling cast products for spectrochemicaland other methods of analysis may be used. Such methods shallbe suitable for the form of material being analyzed and the typeof analytical method used.6.3.2.1 An optional method of sampling for
37、analysis may beto melt together representative portions of each ingot selected,and then sample the liquid composite by casting suitablespecimens for spectrographic or chemical analysis, or both.6.3.2.2 Samples may also be in the form of separately castspectrographic specimens taken from the same pou
38、r used tocast the ingot.6.3.3 As there is no generally accepted method for obtaininga representative sample from a jumbo ingot, the method ofchoice will be as described in 6.3.2.2.6.4 Method of AnalysisThe determination of chemicalcomposition shall be in accordance with suitable methods.6.4.1 For al
39、uminum-base master alloysThe determina-tion of chemical composition shall be in accordance withsuitable chemical (Test Methods E34), spectrochemical (TestMethods E101 and E227) or other methods. In case of dispute,the results of Test Methods E34 shall be the basis of accep-tance.6.4.2 For zinc-base
40、master alloysThe determination ofchemical composition shall preferably be in accordance withsuitable chemical (Test Method E536), ISO 3815-1,ISO 3815-2, (note: ISO 3815-2 is not specific for zinc-basemaster alloy, but may be used in a generic manner with suitablevalidation), or other methods. Becaus
41、e there is no specificASTM or ISO method covering the composition of thiszinc-base master alloy, the test method used as the basis ofacceptance shall be as agreed upon between the producer andpurchaser.7. Size and Shape7.1 Aluminum alloy hardener may be supplied in the formof shot, bar or ingot but
42、typically is supplied as shot.7.2 Zinc-base master alloy may be supplied as ingot orjumbo ingot but is typically supplied as jumbo ingot.7.2.1 The weight of zinc master alloy jumbo ingots isimportant because they are added in a fixed ratio to SpecialHigh Grade zinc jumbo ingots. The weight of jumbo
43、ingotsshall be 1200 6 50 lbs or 2400 6 75 lbs. Other sizes or weightlimits, or both, may be as agreed upon by the producer andcustomer.8. Source Inspection8.1 If the purchaser desires that his representative inspect orwitness the inspection and testing of the product prior toshipment, such agreement
44、 shall be made by the purchaser andproducer or supplier as part of the contract or purchase order.8.2 When such inspection or witness of inspection andtesting is agreed upon, the producer or supplier shall afford thepurchasers representative all reasonable facilities to satisfyhim that the product m
45、eets the requirements of this specifica-tion. Inspection and tests shall be conducted so there is nounnecessary interference with the producers operations.9. Rejection and Rehearing9.1 Material that fails to conform to the requirements of thisspecification may be rejected. Rejection should be report
46、ed tothe producer or supplier promptly and in writing. In case ofdissatisfaction with the results of the test, the producer orsupplier may make claim for a rehearing. If the rehearingestablishes that the material does not conform to the require-ments of this specification, as much of the rejected or
47、iginalmaterial as possible shall be returned to the producer orsupplier.10. Identification Marking10.1 All shot bags, bars, ingots, or jumbo ingots shall beproperly marked for identification with the producers name orbrand.10.2 Each bundle or skid shall be identified with theproducers heat, lot, or
48、other identification mark.10.3 Each ingot, bundle or skid shall be marked with thepink Color Code for alloy V12 as per North Americanrequirements in Practice B908.11. Preparation for Delivery11.1 PackagingUnless otherwise specified the materialshall be packaged to provide adequate protection duringn
49、ormal handling and transportation. Each package shall con-tain only one alloy unless otherwise agreed upon.11.2 MarkingEach shipping container shall be legiblymarked with the suppliers name or trademark.12.
