1、Designation: C782 13Standard Test Method forSoftness of Preformed Tape Sealants1This standard is issued under the fixed designation C782; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parent

Scope1.1 This test method describes a laboratory procedure fordetermining the softness of preformed tape sealants.NOTE 1Cone penetration methods applicable to g

Test MethodD2451 also uses a penetration technique for determining the degree of setin sash glazing compounds.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. Temperature values are also provided (in parenthe-ses) i

7、initionsThe definition of the following term usedin this test method is found in Terminology C717: preformedtape sealant.4. Summary of Test Method4.1 The preformed tape sealant specimen is allowed toequilibrate at standard conditions. A standard needle under adefined load is placed on the specimen f

8、or 5 s. The penetrationof the needle into the preformed tape sealant is measured.Multiple readings are recorded and averaged.5. Significance and Use5.1 Preformed tape sealants are tacky, deformable solidsthat are used under compression between two substrates in avariety of sealing applications. This

9、 procedure measures thesoftness of a preformed tape sealant and gives an indication ofthe preformed tape sealants ease of compression duringinstallation. The resistance to penetration may also give anindication of the toughness of the preformed tape sealant.6. Apparatus6.1 Needle Penetrometer, as de

Test Specimen8.1 Prepare a test specimen by cutting short lengths ofpreformed tape sealant and plying them together to

16、form a solidblock no smaller than 13 mm wide by 13 mm by 25 mm long.9. Conditioning9.1 Condition the test specimen and the penetrometer, including the needle, for at least2hat236 2C (73 6 3.6F).NOTE 3Other test temperatures may be used, provided that thespecimen and the penetrometer, including the ne

17、edle, are conditioned forat least2hatsuch temperature and maintained at that temperature duringthe test. For low temperature testing, for example, both conditioning andtesting must be done in a cold box.10. Procedure10.1 Place the penetrometer in a level position with the shaftset up so that there i

This loadis comprised of the 2.5-g needle, the 47.5-g shaft, and an extraweight of 50 g placed atop the shaft.10.2 Raise the penetrometer shaft until the pointer on thedial reads exactly zero. Lightly tap the indicator dial controllever to ensure that this reading is

19、maintained.10.3 Position the test specimen on the penetrometer so thatit is approximately centered under the needle. Then lower thatpart of the apparatus consisting of the dial gage and shaft withthe needle point until the needle point just makes contact withthe top surface of the specimen.NOTE 4If

20、the specimen is made from preformed tape sealant less than13 mm wide, care should be taken to see that the needle is not placed inthe joint between two abutting strips of preformed tape sealant.10.4 Quickly release the needle for 5 s.10.5 Adjust the apparatus to measure the distance throughwhich the

21、 needle penetrated the specimen. Record the amountof penetration to the nearest 0.1 mm.10.6 Wipe the penetrometer needle clean. Following thesame procedure, take at least two additional penetration read-ings for the same preformed tape sealant specimen. If readingsare taken on the same specimen surf

22、ace, the penetration shouldbe made at points at least 7 mm from other readings. Theamount of penetration for each reading should be recordedseparately and the needle should be wiped clean after eachreading.NOTE 5Unusually low readings, caused by the needle striking anembedded core or other hard mate

23、rial, and unusually high readings causedby penetrating a void or air pocket shall be considered invalid anddisregarded.11. Report11.1 Report the following information:11.1.1 Identification of the preformed tape sealant, that is,the name, lot number, and any other identifying characteristics.11.1.2 A
