Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This practice describes the procedures for testing loadedshipping containers

3、 that would be sold to the United Statesgovernment. The following tests are performed to measure theability of the shipping container to protect the contents fromthe environment, shock, and vibration during wartime condi-tions. This practice is not intended to supplant materialspecifications or exis

4、ting pre-shipment test procedures. Thesuitability of this practice for use with hazardous materials hasnot been determined.1.2 The procedures covered in this practice are suitable forall types of laboratory apparatus including reusable and dis-posable macro and micro products.1.3 The values stated i

5、n inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. Significance and Use3.1 The test procedure in this practice is proposed as apackage performance test to be met for items shipped forUnited States government procurements. This practice willapply only when requested

9、 by the buyer.4. Requirements4.1 Three individual shipping containers, or one unit con-sisting of two or more overpackaged individual units arerequired. Each specimen shall be run through the sequence oftests, in the order given.4.2 Condition the test specimens in accordance with MethodD685 for72hat

10、506 2 % relative humidity and 23 6 1C.5. Procedure5.1 Expose the specimens to a salt spray for2hinaccordance with Test Method D951.5.2 Drop Test Procedures:5.2.1 Items less than 100 lb shall be drop tested in accor-dance with Practice D4169 Element A, Assurance Level I, (seeTable 1). The drop sequen

11、ce shall be conducted as follows:bottom at twice specified height; bottom long edge at specifiedheight; bottom adjacent short edge at specified height; bottomcorner at specified height; bottom diagonal opposite corner atspecified height; and top at specified height.5.2.2 Items more than 100 lb (see

12、Methods D1083) shall bedrop tested in accordance with Practice D4169 Element B,Assurance Level I, (see Table 2). The drop sequence shall beconducted as follows: one drop on each bottom edge; and thetotal number of drops shall be four.1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee E41 on

17、D4332. Each cycle shall consist ofone week under each of the following environments in se-quence, desert, tropical, and cryogenic. Drop test as outlined in5.2.5.5 Vibration TestConduct the vibration test in accor-dance with Practice D4169 Element E, Assurance Level I.5.6 Bounce, Loose Cargo TestCond

18、uct the bounce, loosecargo test in accordance with MIL-STD-810D Method 5.6.12,Procedure XI, Part 2. Drop test as outlined in 5.2.6. Inspection6.1 The packages shall be considered successful in passingthe tests if, upon inspection, the following condition(s) are met:6.1.1 Disposable GlassCompletion o

19、f testing withoutbreakage occurring in any of the three units tested or in the caseof bulk packed items with more than fifty in a shippingcontainer, less than 3 % breakage in each of the three unitstested.6.1.2 All OthersCompletion of testing without breakageoccurring and the packaged item remaining

20、 100 % functional.6.2 Outer package must contain product and provide adegree of protection to contents.7. Certification7.1 Each supplier shall maintain on file laboratory testreports verifying successful testing as outlined in this practiceand, if required, issue a written certification that the pac

21、kagingcomplies with this practice.8.
