It specifies float glass and aluminium foil as the test substrates and makes use of a modified cleaning procedure to prepare the float glass substrate. It supersedes BS4781-1:1973 and BS478

It refers only to technical suitability and in no way absolves the user of this standard from statutory obligations relating t

、and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on theinside front cover.BS4781:1990 BSI 03-1999 1 1 Scope This British Standard specifies requirements for plastics labels for permanent adhesion under specified conditions. Requirements and methods of test are

、given for adhesion, dimensional stability, colour fastness and permanence of legend as well as resistance to water, temperature variation, abrasion, detergents and other chemicals. It does not apply to pressure-sensitive adhesive labels for marine use which are the subject ofBS5609. NOTE 1Assumption

、s should not be made that adhesion performance as determined by the method described in this British Standard can be related to performance on different substrates. NOTE 2The titles of publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of th

、is British Standard, the following definitions apply. 2.1 pressure-sensitive adhesive plastics label (orlabel) a label, plate, panel or decorative trim with or without a legend or symbol (for any purpose, e.g.identification, instruction, warning, decoration) and made of plastics film or sheet to whi

A.1.2 Preconditioning Immediately before test specimens are prepared, precondition the labels for at least2

、4h in an atmosphere of23 2 C and505% r.h. A.1.3 Test specimens Cut three test specimens (see clause4) measuring200mm 25mm from each label. A.1.4 Procedure A.1.4.1 Flexible plastics labels A.1.4.1.1 Preparation of substrate. Wipe the surface of the glass plates (A.1.1.2) with a fresh piece of lint-fr

、ee cotton wool saturated with4-hydroxy-4-methylpentan-2-one. Dry the plate with fresh cotton wool, then wipe the surface with fresh cotton wool saturated with one of the cleaning materials listed in items c) to f) ofA.1.1.5 of this appendix. Dry the plates with fresh cotton wool, then repeat for a t

、otal of three cleaning operations with this solvent. A.1.4.1.2 Preparation of test specimens. Place the prepared glass plate, test surface uppermost, on a flat level surface. Remove the protective backing from a test specimen and place the test specimen adhesive side downwards on the glass plate usi

、ng light finger pressure only. Ensure that the test specimen is unstretched and is applied central and parallel to the longer sides of the plates, taking care that no air bubbles are trapped between the glass plate and the test specimen. Place the roller centrally across the test specimen on one end

、 of the plate and, taking care not to apply any additional pressure by hand, roll twice in each direction so that each traverse of200mm occupies about10s, ensuring that the roller travels in the exact line of the test specimen. Prepare three test specimens in this way. A.1.4.1.3 Conditioning of the

、test specimens A.1.4.1.3.1 For initial adhesion, condition the test specimens for20min in the atmosphere specified inA.1.2. A.1.4.1.3.2 For final adhesion, condition the test specimens for24h in the atmosphere specified inA.1.2. A.1.4.1.4 Stripping. Double back one end of the test specimen and fix t

、he free end of the plate in one clamp of the testing machine and the free end of the test specimen in the other clamp so that the peel angle is180. Set the driven clamp in motion at a constant rate of300 30mm/min and record the average reading, ignoring the first and last25mm of the test piece lengt

、h. Repeat for the remaining two test specimens. NOTE 1If the test specimen does not peel cleanly from the plate, a small piece of release paper may be interposed between the label and glass plate for approximately1mm from the labels leading edge. This will ensure a true peel from the glass plate. NO

、TE 2If the test specimen is too short to allow an end to be doubled back prior to stripping, apply a length of suitable pressure-sensitive adhesive tape, at least twice as long as the glass plate, lengthways along the glass plate so that it covers the entire area of the test specimen. Roll as described in A.1.4.1.2, condition as described in A.1.4.1.3 and double-back one end of the tape to form a “tail” prior to stripping. 2) Information on the source of a suitable roller may be obtained from BSI Enquiry Section, Linford Wood, Milton Keynes MK
