、nd object This standard is intended to permit a variety of positioning devices which respond to a linear motion to be mounted on the actuator of a control valve, either directly or by employing an intermediate mounting bracket. There is a large variety of types, sizes and designs of actuators. The f
、ollowing parameters define the intended applicability of this standard for the guidance of manufacturers and users. 1.1 The standardized mounting applies only to positioners which are mounted on the side of the actuator. 1.2 The standardized mounting applies in general only to those actuators which
、have a travel of100mm or less. 1.3 The standardized mounting is designed to cover three basic types of actuator design (see Figure 1, page3): a) those with some form of cast or fabricated yoke to connect the actuator power unit to the valve; b) those which use some form of central tube yoke to conne
、ct the actuator power unit to the valve; c) those in which the yoke incorporates two or more columns or pillars to connect the actuator power unit to the valve. 2 Definitions All of the definitions given in other parts of IEC Publication534shall apply, with the addition of the following. 2.1 actuato
、r a device or mechanism which changes a signal into a corresponding movement controlling the position of the internal regulating mechanism of the control valve NOTE 1The signal or energizing force may be pneumatic, electric, hydraulic, or any combination thereof. NOTE 2The actuator comprises an actu
、ator power unit and a yoke for attachment to the control valve. The yoke may take the form of a casting, a central tube, two or more pillars, or it may be fabricated from stampings (see Figure 1). 2.2 actuating power unit the part of the actuator which converts fluid, electrical, thermal or mechanic
、al energy into stem motion to develop thrust or torque 2.3 yoke the structure which rigidly connects the actuator power unit to a valve NOTEThe yoke may be an integral part of the actuator power unit in some actuator designs. 2.4 actuator stem the bar or rod between the actuator and the valve which
、ultimately operates the internal regulating mechanism 3 Basic design principles The objective is to standardize the attachment of the positioner to the side of the actuator to assure compatibility of products from different manufacturers. 3.1 For this purpose the manufacturer of the actuator shall o
、bserve certain design criteria (seeFigure 1 to Figure 6, pages3to7). These criteria consist of a suitable rib(s) and fixing hole(s) (see Figure 6a) or, alternatively, a shape allowing the mounting plate to be clamped to the side of the actuator using either two U-bolts (see Figure 6c) or two or more
、 of the four outer mounting holes in the design (see Figure 6b). The design of the positioner mounting shall assure: a) correct positioning of the positioner in relation to the actuator stem; b) rigid mounting of the positioner. 3.2 The manufacturer of the positioner may design a positioner incorpor
、ating a means of attachment compatible with this standard. Alternatively, a separate mounting plate may be supplied which is compatible with the standardized mounting. 4 Feedback connection In order to standardize the feedback attachment to the actuator a connection piece shall be provided which sha
、ll have four threaded holes tapped M6surrounded with a bearing area of at least10mm diameter for each hole (see Figure 2, page4). The remaining design of the feedback attachment is not specified and may be designed to meet the requirements of each manufacturer. If the design permits the connection p
、iece to be rotated through180, only two threaded holes, on one side only, need be provided. The manufacturer of the positioner shall provide adequate means of transmitting the motion of the actuator stem to the positioner by use of the above connection piece.BS5793-6:1986 2 BSI 08-1999 5 Mounting pl
、ate design The positioner shall either incorporate the attachment means or be provided with a mounting plate in accordance with the details given in Figure 3, page5. It should be noted that only the standardized details are given. Details such as material thickness to provide rigidity and design of
、mounting means of the positioner have not been standardized. The design of the mounting plate must ensure sufficient contact with the rib to ensure that the objective of Item b) of Sub-clause3.1 is attained. 6 Actuator mounting The actuator shall be provided with a suitable means for mounting the po
、sitioner as follows: a) by means of ribs of the cross-section shown in Figure 4, page5, and relative position shown in Figure 5, page6; b) by means of two U-bolts as shown in Figure 6, page7, provided that the diameter of the supporting pillars is between20mm and35mm; c) by means of any two of the o
、uter fixing holes in the bracket on a suitable surface. 7 Mounting accessories The positioner manufacturer shall provide two M8U-bolts plus nuts, and four M8screws to permit the positioner to be mounted to an actuator of any design. The actuator manufacturer shall provide the necessary holes for the
、 attachment of the mounting plate, either the single central hole, or the two or more alternative holes, as may be dictated by the design of the yoke.BS 5793-6:1986 BSI 08-1999 3 NOTEMidpoint of the threaded holes in the feedback connection at midtravel of the stem.
