It supersedes BS 6313:1982, which is withdrawn. This revision of BS 6

、313 has been prepared to take into account more up-to-date procedures, and to make editorial and technical changes that improve the accuracy and clarity of this standard. Libraries and similar institutions make microfilm copies of serials to preserve them for archival purposes, provide copies for ot

、her institutions and for reference purposes. This British Standard has been prepared to help people concerned in that work to produce microfilm of good quality and to provide adequate bibliographic and technical information. If a serial is prepared in accordance with the recommendations of BS 5444 t

、here should be little difficulty in microfilming it. The difficulties arise with serials that have not been so prepared. They might contain type sizes that are too small to reproduce well, the quality of paper and print might be poor, pages might be missing, torn or creased. Sometimes experiments wi

、equirements for the microfilming of serials on 35 mm black-and-white silver-halide roll film for purposes of preservation. The requirements include the provision of adequate bibliographic references and procedures for maintaining and checking the reproducibility of the microfilm image. The standard

、nitions For the purposes of this British Standard, the terms and definitions given in BS ISO 6196 and the following apply. 3.1 eye-legible readable from the microfilm without magnification (see 8.2) 3.2 serial publication, other than a newspaper, in hard-copy, issued in successive parts bearing nume

、rical or chronological designations and intended to be continued indefinitely NOTE Examples include periodicals; annuals (reports, yearbooks, directories etc.); the journals, memoirs, proceedings, transactions etc., of societies; numbered monographic series (a group of separate items related to one

、another by the fact that each item bears, in addition to its own title proper, a collective title applying to the group as a whole).BS 6313:2003 2 BSI 10 July 2003 4 Images on film 4.1 Sequence of filming Serials shall be filmed in chronological order. Numbered or lettered sections shall be filmed i

、n numerical or alphabetical order, followed by unnumbered sections such as supplements, magazine sections and comics. Indexes shall be filmed immediately after the volume or issue to which they apply. 4.2 Reel division Serials that are too large to be contained within one reel of film shall be divid

、ed between reels in a systematic and bibliographically acceptable way, e.g. at the end of a week, or a month, or a year, or at an acceptable break in the subject. 4.3 Advertisements and blank pages All sections and pages of serials shall be filmed, including any advertising or publicity matter where

、ver possible. Any blank pages that are part of a numbered sequence, whether or not they are numbered, shall be recorded on the film. They shall either: a) be filmed where they appear in the serial, if that is essential for archival purposes; or b) have their numbers listed on a target (see 8.12.5),

、if they are omitted from the film. Blank pages may be omitted if not essential for archival purposes, but where omission occurs, targets shall be included indicating any omissions. 4.4 Material out of sequence Any pages or issues that are not in the correct sequence in the serial shall, if possible,

、 be put in the correct sequence before the serial is filmed (see 8.4). 4.5 Torn or creased pages Torn or creased pages shall, whenever possible, be prepared as necessary to maximize capture of information. 4.6 Missing material Before filming begins, every effort shall be made to obtain hard-copy of

、missing issues or pages, and replacements of imperfect pages. If hard-copy cannot be obtained and a microfilm copy is available for splicing into the film, the microfilm copy shall be acceptable if it conforms to this standard. 5 Reduction ratio and image arrangement 5.1 Reduction ratio The reductio

、n ratio shall be chosen to allow the smallest characters and the finest lines in illustrations to be clearly legible in a duplicate copy displayed on a reader at the appropriate magnification. If this cannot be achieved sectional filming shall be used (see 5.4). NOTE The image should fill the frame

、area as much as possible. At any change of reduction ratio a change of reduction ratio target shall be microfilmed at the new reduction ratio. 5.2 Image area The dimensions of the image area (see Figure 1) on 35 mm unperforated film shall be as given in Table 1. Table 1 Requirements for the dimensio

、ns of the image area Dimension Requirement width (A) 33 mm max. length (B) minimum required to accommodate the material being filmed space between adjacent items (whether images or targets) (C) mm edge margins (D) 1 mm min. 2 +2 0BS 6313:2003 BSI 10 July 2003 3 5.3 Sequence of images The images shal

、ontain double-page exposures. In 1A and 2A the text is perpendicular to the long edge of the film, in 1B and 2B it is parallel to the long edge of the film.
