、a comma has been used throughout as the decimal marker. 1 Scope and field of application The method specified in this standard serves to determine the Nssel deformation index of hot-applied bituminous sealing compounds and similar compounds, the index being a meas- ure of their dimensional stability
、 on heating. lhe method is also applicable to compounds containing road tar pitch. 2 Concept Given a spherical end of a specimen prior to testing, the Ns- sel deformation index is the ratio of its diameter to its height after it has been stored at 45 OC for a given period. 3 Designation Designation
、of the method of determining the dimensional stability of bituminous sealing compounds and similar com- pounds on heating (17 A 2): Test DIN 1996- 17 A 2 4 Apparatus and reagents 4.1 specimen preparation: a) DIN 12 907 - 100 casserole; b) mould release agent (e.g. 1 : 1 mixture of glycerol and dex-
、trin); c) mould as specified in DIN 1996 Part 18. lhe following apparatus and reagents shall be used for 4.2 The following apparatus shall be used for testing: a) water bath containing both water and ice (ice water); b) oven as specified in DIN 50 O11 Part 12), fitted with an internal door with glas
、s window and DIN 12 775 - E 0,2/0/100 thermometer; c) glass plate, approximately 200 mm X 300 mm X 3 mm in size; d) DIN 862 caliper gauge. 5 Specimen preparation 5.1 Sampling and specimen preparation shall be carried out as specified in DIN 1996 Parts 2 and 3, the quantity taken being sufficient to
、permit two specimen balls, each about 47 mm in diameter, to be produced. 1) See also DIN 12 880 Part 1. 5.2 A thin film of mould release agent shall be applied to the inner surfaces of both halves of a mould, and the mould assembled. Next, the sample material shall be heated in a cas- serole to work
、ing temperature. Once this temperature has been reached, the mould shall be completely filled with the liquid material, care being taken to prevent air being en- trapped. lhe mould, containing the specimen material, shall be al- lowed to cool at ambient temperature (18 to 28 OC) until the specimen c
、an easily be removed. Under running water, at ambient temperature, the specimen shall be shaped with the hands to a sphere, any adhering mould release agent being removed as well. The specimens so prepared shall show no creases or cavities. 6 Procedure 6.1 Immediately after preparation, the specimen
、 balls shall be stored in ice water for two hours and shall then be dried and placed on a dry glass plate which has previously also been cooled in ice water, the spacing of the specimen balls being 10cm. The glass plate with the specimens shall be placed in the oven with the temperature sensor locat
、ed exactly between them and at a height equal to half the speci- men height. Throughout the test, the temperature shall be maintained at (45 f 1) “C. Specimens produced from pave- ment sealing compounds shall be heated in the oven for three hours, those produced from concrete or from compounds used
、to seal rails embedded in road surfaces, for 24 hours. 6.2 After removal from the oven, the glass plate together with the specimens shall be placed in ice water fora minimum of five minutes. Following this, the specimen height and the horizontal diam- eter in at least two directions normal to each o
、ther shall be measured using a caliper gauge. 7 Evaluation The deformation index shall be calculated for each specimen using the following equation: diameter height Deformation index = , taking the arithmetic mean from the individual measured values as the diameter. If the deformation indices of the
、 specimens differ from each other by more than the permissible range, azul (cf. clause 9.1), the specifications given in DIN 1996 Part 1 shall apply. Continued on page 2 uth Verlag GmbH.
