、F COMPONENTS IN POLYETHYLENE-BACKED CARPET Application This procedure is used to determine the weight of the various components of polyethylene-backed automotive carpeting materials used as floor coverings, luggage liners, trim panels and other applications. This extraction procedure will remove pol

、 controlled atmosphere of 23 +/- 2 C and 50 +/- 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure 1. Die cut three test specimens across the width of the carpet. Each sample should be cut at least 250 mm from the

、edge of the roll. 2. Clean and dry the beakers and place in an oven for 15 minutes at 102 C. 3. Remove the beakers from the oven and place in a desiccator. Allow to cool to 23 +/- 2 C. 4. Weigh each beaker to the nearest milligram (1000 mL beaker = W1 and W1*; 2000 mL beaker = W2). 5. Place a test s

、pecimen in the 2000 mL beaker and record weight (W3). W3 - W2 = Weight of test specimen (W4) 6. Add approximately 600 mL of xylene or toluene to the 2000 mL beaker containing the sample, and cover with a watch glass. 7. 10、ugh the 50 mesh sieve to collect any loose fiber in the solution. Place the solvent-treated sample and all the loose fiber on a sheet of filter paper, backed by several sheets of absorbent paper towel. Allow the solvent to evaporate from the sample under a hood for one hour, then dry the sample in a

、n oven at 38 +/- 2 C for one hour. 10. Remove the sample from the oven and condition for a minimum of 4 hours at 23 +/- 2 C and 50 +/- 5 R.H. 11. For a Needled Carpet: Place the sample and all loose fiber in one of the tared 1000 mL beakers. Weigh the beaker and sample and loose fiber (W5). Calculat

、e the weight, in grams, of the sample and loose fiber (W6) by subtracting the weight of the tared beaker (W1). Weight of sample and loose fiber (W6) = W5 - W1. Obtain the weight of the polyethylene (W7) as follows: Weight of polyethylene (W7) = W4 - W6 12. For a Tufted Carpet: A. Carefully separate

、the pile (using fingers or equivalent technique) from the tufting foundation. Place the pile fiber in one of the tared 1000 mL beakers (W1), along with any loose fiber in the filter paper. Place the tufting foundation in the other tared beaker (W1*). B. Weigh each beaker with the samples and record

、the weight. Weight of pile fiber and beaker = Wp; weight of tufting foundation and beaker = WT. Calculate the weight of the pile fiber (W8) and tufting foundation (W9) by subtracting the weight of the tared beakers. Weight of pile fiber (W8) = Wp - W1 Weight of tufting foundation (W9) = WT - W1* C.

、Calculate the weight of the polyethylene (W7) as follows: Weight of polyethylene (W7) = W4 - (W8 + W9) 13. Convert the weight (grams) of the various carpet components to a weight/unit area as required in the applicable material specification. To get: kg/m2 - multiply results by 0.043 FORD LABORATORY

、 TEST METHOD AN 102-02 Page 4 of 4 Copyright 2001, Ford Global Technologies, Inc. 14. Report weight of pile fiber, primary and secondary backings (if applicable), and polyethylene backcoating. 15. Repeat for second and third samples. Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities.
