、the relative corrosion performance of plated and/or painted parts. It was originally developed to test tubing, but can be used for any metallic part. Tubing tested under this method may undergo an additional (optional) pressure leak test. This is an accelerated test that is intended to simulate the

、corrosive conditions chassis components are exposed to during normal vehicle use. Apparatus Required Test Box A box, with cover , made of high heat (120 C) resistant material such as polycarbonate. Dimensions are at the discretion of the testing facility, but depth of box must be a minimum of 3 time

、s the diameter of the largest parts that will be tested. Drain holes of 10 mm dia meter are to be drilled in the bottom of the box every 100 - 140 cm. Samples As appropriate for the desired material under evaluation, and/or as specified by the engineering document. Actual components (tubing, clamps,

、 tube/end fitting combinations) or sections of components should be used whenever possible. Nylon Net 1 layer of nylon mesh (landscape fabric), 3 mesh/cm (20 mesh/in), to be spread over the bottom of the test box. Laboratory Oven Air circulating oven capable of maintaining a temperature of 120 C and

、 large enough to hold the test box. Materials Required Sand* Only sand of quartz - type is to be used. Designation Medium Grain Size, mm Max-min Grain Size, mm Sand A 0.65 0 - 1.6 Sand B 0.30 0 - 0.6 Sand C 0.18 0 - 0.35 Kaolin 0.01 FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD BQ 117-01 Page 2 of 3 Copyright 2000, F

Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditio ned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/ - 2 C and 50 +/ - 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and t

、ested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure 1. Prepare a 1 % by weight sodium chloride solution in dist illed water. 2. Prepare the sand mixture as follows: Designation Weight % Sand A 56 +/ - 1 Sand B 13 +/ - 1 Sand C 25 +/ - 1 Kaolin 6 +/ - 1 3. Place a layer of sand in t

、he test box to a depth of the diameter of the largest sample being tested. NOTE: Weigh sand before adding it to the box. Weight of sand used to fill box will be needed in Step 6 of the procedure. 4. Place samples on top of sand layer, leaving at least 10 mm distance between each sample and betw een

、walls and samples. 5. Cover samples with sand to a depth of the diameter of the largest sample being tested. NOTE: Weigh sand before adding it to the box. Use the same sand throughout the test. For cycles 2 through 12, mix and pulverize sand as necessary to remove lumps and redistribute corrosion pr

Use an amount that is equivalent to approximately 8 % of the total sand mixture dry weight. 7. Put cover on box to protect test

、mixture and reduce surface evaporation. Leave box at room temperature for 6 days. 8. At the start of day 7, remove top and place box in an air circulating test oven at 120 C for 24 hours. 9. After 24 hours in the oven, remove the box from the ove n and allow the box to cool for a minimum of 1 hour.

、10. When box and contents are cooled enough to handle, carefully remove the test samples from the sand mixture. Tap samples gently to remove all loose deposits or brush with a soft bristle brush under running water. Dry samples with compressed air. 11. Evaluate samples visually for occurrence of red

、 rust and white corrosion. Photograph samples (see step 13 below for schedule) and run any additional tests (step 14) if requested. 12. Place samples bac k in the box. 13. The following schedule of events should be followed: Cycle # Steps 1 3 - 9 2 - 12 5 - 12 2, 4, 8, 12 photographs 14. The followi

、ng tests are optional and should be performed only if requested: - pressure leak testing for t ubing samples (at 4, 8 and 12 cycles) - functional tests (for example, opening and releasing clamps) after every 2 cycles Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each party is responsib le for determining proper use and handling in its facilities.
