、I INTERNATIONAL TRUCK and ENGINE CORPORATION I CEMS (CORPORATE ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION) TITLE: Plastic Coatings - Powder System Materials Engineering Materials Engineering WHTTENREVIE WED BY: PPROVED Bi? NUMBER: CEMS G-15 CURRENT ISSUE DATE: April 2002 July 1999 SUPERSEDES ISSUE OF: 1.0 S
、COPE This specification covers the Corporations requirements for plastic coatings applied by a fluidized bed coating technique to provide improved bearing properties, corrosion resistance and other properties. 2.0 INTRODUCTION The powder coat system provides another means to provide a smooth, nonpor
、ous coating on either simple or complex parts. Relatively heavy coatings providing a comfortable “feel” on handles and knobs can be provided. 3.0 CONTENTS REFERENCE DOCUMENTS CLASSIFICATION AND REQUIREMENTS QUALITY METHODS OF TEST SOURCE APPROVAL AND QUALITY CONTROL DESIGNATION ON DRAWINGS PACKING A

、This coating process is applicable to any base material or substrate which has a melting point substantially higher than that of the coating material and will not form a nonadherent oxide film at coating temperatures. These requirements permit coating most ferrous metals (such as iron, steel, cast i
、ron, etc.), aluminum and glass; but prohibit coating metal alloys containing low melting constituents such as uncombined tin, copper or lead. A.5 TYPICAL APPLICATIONS Plastic coatings have been successfully applied in the following areas: A.5.1 Bearing Surfaces - The toughness and low coefficient of
、 friction of nylon and teflon which encouraged their use as bearings are retained with the additional advantage of creating a bearing surface wherever needed as on pivots and ball joints, rocker arm shafts, transmission shift forks and rails. A.5.2 Parts Subject To Corrosion - These heavy, durable,
、corrosion - resistant coatings are applicable to chemical handling equipment or parts subject to heavy corrosion damage. A.5.3 Handles And Decorative Parts - The ability to produce a smooth and level coating on rough surfaces such as sand castings and forgings, recommends this process. A.6 PLASTIC C
、OATING MATERIALS Several plastic materials are currently available in finely divided powder suitable for coating by the fluidized bed process. The properties of these coatings are summarized in the following table. Considerable variation is encountered in coating materials of the same basic type but
、 supplied by different manufacturers. For this reason, the prescribed qualification procedure must be closely followed.
