This specification covers the requirements for the 76-millimeter, 62-caliber steel cartridgecase, herein referred to as the “cartridge case.“ 2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS 2.1 General. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the cartridge caseshall conform to the requirements specified herein and on drawing 3028547 (see 4.5.1).3.3 High stress expansion (M101). The cartri
22、dge case shall show no evidence of cracks in anyportion of the case when subjected to the high stress expansion test of 4.5.2.3.4 Hardness (M102). The cartridge cases shall conform to the hardness values specified in table I inthe regions shown in figure 1. Generally, heat treatment is necessary to
23、achieve the required values forhardness and elongation. No individual readings shall be outside the regional requirement (see 4.5.3).TABLE I. Hardness and tensile strength. The yield strength and elongation values for thecartridge case shall be as specified in table I in the regions shown in figure 1 (see 4.5.4 and 4.5.5).3.6 Protective coating (M104). The case shall be
25、zinc plated in accordance with ASTM B 633, TypeII except that the exterior thickness of the protective coating shall be between 0.0003 inch and 0.0008 inchand the interior plating thickness shall be 0.00015 inch minimum. Thinner plating at the inert standoffcontact points is acceptable provided ther
26、e are no more than nine. The protective coating shall show nocorrosion of basis metal. The size and frequency of the black corrosion products of zinc shall not exceedthat of the established standard of 0.2400 (see 4.5.6). After testing, white corrosion products of zinc thatdo not interfere with cham
27、bering of the cartridge case are acceptable.3.7 Chamber gage (M105). Each cartridge case shall fully chamber in a Navy-approved chamber gage(see 4.5.7).3.8 Ballistics (M106). Each cartridge case shall load, eject, show no splits, and otherwise performsatisfactorily when ballistically tested (see 4.5
28、.8).3.8.1 Case extraction (M107). Cartridge cases tested under automatic and semiautomatic action shall beejected and shall in no way cause the weapon to cease firing. When fired in the single shot mode, thecartridge case shall be capable of being extracted by manual operation of the extraction syst
29、em. (NOTE:The term “ejected“ means that the cartridge case is thrown clear of the breech, permitting loading of thesubsequent round. Item identification marking of all cartridge cases shall be in accordance withthe contract or purchase order (see 6.2).3.10 Workmanship (M108). The cartridge case shall be produced in
33、such a manner as to ensurecompliance with all the requirements of this specification and the applicable associated specifications.There shall be no burrs, (cracks, tears) or other imperfections of manufacture, which in the opinion of theGovernment inspector, may adversely affect either the assembly,
34、 functioning, or handling of the product. (Flutes, draw marks, loopers, slug marks, and pits shall not exceed 10 percent of the calculated wallthickness in the affected area nor be of sufficient magnitude to cause minimum or maximum dimensions tobe exceeded. (NOTE: Grain orientation directionality i
35、s produced by rolling. A looper is a visible patternof this grain orientation extended by drawing.) There shall be no flutes, pitting, draw marks or loopers inthe region between the base and a circumferential line 3 inches from the base of the cartridge case.) Theonly acceptable surface defects on t
36、he interior base-to-wall radius are those exemplified by the sampleboard approved by the contracting activity (see 4.5.1).3.11 Wax Coating. The exterior side wall of the case shall be coated with a thin (0.0008 inch) film ofwax emulsion. The emulsion shall be a uniform, stable aqueous emulsion of wa
37、xes, resins and emulsifyingagents. Prior to application of the coating, the exterior surface shall be free of oils, greases, soaps, acids orother foreign matter. Slight sections void of wax are permissible.3.11.1 pH value. The pH value of the emulsion shall be between 8.0 and 9.0.3.11.2 Volatile mat
38、ter. The emulsion shall be free of volatile organic solvents. The solvent used shallbe water with no more than 1.0 percent by weight of perfume or perfume solvents.3.11.3 Total solids. The total solids shall be no less than 12 percent by weight.3.11.4 Wax and Resin Content. The wax and resin content
39、 shall be no less than 8 weight percent.3.11.5 Softening Point. The softening point of the wax shall no be less than 165oF.4. VERIFICATION 4.1 Classification of inspections. The inspection requirements specified herein are classified asfollows: a. First article inspection (see 4.3) b. Quality confor
40、mance inspection (see 4.4) 4.2 Classification of characteristics. The characteristics verified by the tests and examinationsspecified herein and in the detail inspection are classified as critical, major or minor in accordance withDOD-STD-2101. Requirements for critical characteristics are identifie
41、d by the symbol (C), and majorcharacteristics by the symbol (M). The number following the classification symbol indicates the serialnumber of the characteristic. Requirements which are not annotated with a classification code areclassified as minor.4.3 First article inspection. The first article sam
42、ple shall consist of 158 cartridge cases and shall beexamined and tested in accordance with table II. 43、nder the same conditions as the production lot. Further production ofcartridge cases by the contractor, prior to the approval of the first article, shall be at the contractors risk.4.3.1 First article sample acceptance/rejection. Acceptance or rejection of the first article sampleshall be in accorda
44、nce with table II. For those where the acceptance criteria is not shown, any failure tomeet the requirements shall be cause for rejection of the sample.4.4 Quality conformance inspection.
