In conjunction with the compatibility r

、equirements set forth in “Mobile Station - Land Station Compatibility Standard for Dual- Mode Narrowband Analog Cellular Technolo$y“. these requirements will ensure that a land station can provide service to subscribers in any cellular system manufactured according to the same compatibility standard

、 and a corresponding subscriber unit performance specification, “Recommended Minimum Standard for 800 MHz Dual-Mode Narrowband Analog Cellular Subscriber Units“). The land station can mewise provide service to an analog subscriber unit manufactured according to EWTA-553. “Cellular System Mobile Stat

、ion - Land Station Compatibity SpecifZcaUon“. and IS- 19, Recommended Minimum Standards for 800 MHz Cellular Subscriber Units“ The basic requirements for wideband mode of operation embodied in this performance specification were originally derived from IS-20, “Recommended Minimum Standards for 800 M

、Hz Cellular Land Station Units“. The extensions to address the dual-mode narrowband analog capability were derived by due process within EIA/TIA TR45.1. There are no annexes considered part of this Standard. vi EIA/TiA - IS-89 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 -ope These standards detail definitions, methods of me

、asurement, and minimum performance characteristics of 800 MHz cellular land stations. These standards share the purpose of the Mobile Station - Land Station Compatibility Standard for Dual-Mode Narrowband Analog Cellular Technology (Le. the “compatibity specification“ and subsequent revisions there0

、0 of assuring that celluar systems in conjunction with their land station equipment provide service to any subscriber unit that meets the compatibility requirements of the compatibility specification. Compatibility, as used in connection with these standards and the compatibility specification, is u

、nderstood to mean: Cellular systems with their associated land stations are capable of placing and receiving calls with any cellular subscriber unit. Conversely, any subscriber unit is capable of placing and receiving calls in the cellular system via the land station equipment. To assure compatibili

、ty, it is essential that both radio-system parameters and call- processing parameters be specified. The speech-filtering, modulation, and RF-emission parameters commonly encountered in two-way radio systems have been updated and expanded to reflect the unique radio plan upon which cellular systems a

、re based. The sequence of call-processing steps that the mobile and land stations execute to establish calls has been specified in the compatibility specification along with the digital control messages and analog signais that are exchanged between the two stations. Although the basic purpose of cel

、lular telecommunications has been voice communication, evolving usages (e.g data) may allow the omission of some of the features specified herein provided that the system compatibiity is not compromised. The narrow analog specifications are an extension to the standard wide analog operation. All nar

、row analog capable subscriber units shall be capable of standard wide analog operation and meet all of the corresponding wide analog specifications. These standards concentrate specifically on the land station radio transmitting and receiving equipment: they cover the cellular switch and the cell-co

、ntrol equipment only to the extent that compatibility with the compatibility specification is assured. 1.2 The system is designed to supply mobile telephone service using a “cellular“ radio coverage plan. This plan divides a metropolitan area into a number of coverage areas or “cells“ with each cell

、 being assigned a portion of the available radio channels. The channels used in one cell are again usable in spatially separated cells in the same service area. The subscriber unit communicates with a distributed array of cell-site land stations. The cell-site land stations are controlled by the cel

、lular-system network control and switching equipment that provides connection to the world-wide telecommunications network. A call between the land network and a subscriber unit is routed via the cellular control system to the cell site that best serves the location of the subscriber unit. A call in progress can proceed indefinitely as the subscriber unit moves from cell to cell throughout the service area since it is automaticaliy reassigned to an available channel within a new cell. Some of the channels within each cell are dedicated to the control of the su
