、Designation: F1436 11An American National StandardStandard Guide forCenter Serving Diameter Dimensions for Archery BowStrings1This standard is issued under the fixed designation F1436; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision

、, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This guide covers the formulation of preliminary guide-lines for the outside diameter dimensions of the

、center servingsfor the shooting strings for archery bows.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas the standard. The values given in parentheses are forinformation only.2. Terminology2.1 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:2.1.1 bow string, nspecial multi-strand cord

、that spans anarchery bow from end to end and is used to engage the rear endof an arrow in order to launch it into flight.2.1.2 bow string material, nstrands of various materials, both natural and synthetic, from which bow strings are made.2.1.2.1 DiscussionMost bow strings today are manufac-tured fro

、m synthetic materials that have superior strength andresistance to wear and atmospheric conditions. Difference inthe tensile strength of the materials is responsible for adifference in the size and number of the strands in a bowstring. In addition, difference in the force necessary to draw variousbow

、s may dictate varying numbers of strands of a givenmaterial to provide adequate strength for satisfactory service. The material used for wrapping to create a center serving isavailable in several sizes or diameters. This, combined withvariation in the number of strands used to make the mainstring, pe

、rmits adjustment of the outside diameter of the centerserving within reasonable limits so that standardization ispractical.2.1.3 center serving, nwrapping of twisted or braidedline, or monofilament material, that is placed on the bow stringnear its center.2.1.3.1 DiscussionThis wrapping covers the a

、rea wherethe nock of the arrow engages the bow string. It is used to resistthe abrasive wear of repeated shots and also to provide a properfit with the slot of the nock.2.1.4 draw weight of the bow, npeak or maximum forcerequired to draw the bow string of a bow from its position atrest (brace height

、) to the full draw position.2.1.5 nock, nslot, or a special fitting that contains a slot, that is positioned at the rear end of an arrow to engage the bowstring.2.1.5.1 DiscussionThe slot maintains secure contact withthe bow string while the bow is being drawn, and also duringthe release of the strin

、g and the return of the string to itsoriginal position before being drawn.2.1.6 string groove width or slot throat dimension, nnarrowest portion of the slot opening in the nock, usuallylocated near the open end of the slot.2.1.7 string hole size, ndimension at the bottom or base ofthe nock slot.2.1.7

、.1 DiscussionThis is the area where the bow stringsits when it is seated in the slot.3. Significance and Use3.1 This guide is not meant to be all inclusive since thereare, and will continue to be, special circumstances that willdictate the use of nonconforming dimensions. These specialcircumstances

、and the requirements that they establish cannotbe totally anticipated and therefore must be treated individu-ally.3.2 These guidelines are based on an analysis of presentlyused materials for the manufacture of bow strings and thestrength requirements dictated by archery bows falling withina draw wei

、ght range of 0 to 100 lb (0 to 444.8 N).3.3 These guidelines also address the desirability of properfit of the arrow nock to the center serving.4. Fit of the Nock on the Center Serving4.1 Preferable FitWhile there are some instances wherethe practice is not followed, the majority of archers prefer t

、hatthe nock of the arrow be retained on the bow string with aslight “snap-fit.” This is mandatory when the archer uses amechanical device to hook onto the string to draw the bow, andto aid in releasing the string to launch the arrow. However, there are specificmethods of using the fi

、tring isnot desirable, since it can cause shooting inaccuracies as wellas reduction in the velocity of the arrow in flight. Extremeinterference fit can result in failure of the nock as a result ofshock loading when the bow string is released. For thesereasons, it is important to be able to control n

Some snap-fit is desirable; too muchis undesirable.4.2 Influence of the Design and Manufacture of NocksMost of the separate nocks in use today are injection moldedplastic. Various designs take different approaches to obtain thedesired fit of the nock to the

It is most common toprovide a throat at the opening of the slot that is smaller thanthe diameter of the center serving and then enlarge the bottomof the slot to accept the serving diameter with a slightly looseor slight interference fit. The tangs of the nock have sufficientresilience to sp

Tosome degree, the design of the nock and the amount ofresilience influences the dimension of the opening in the throatof the nock.4.3 Importance of Controlling Center Serving DiameterInorder to p

、rovide nock manufacturers with basic dimensions andtolerances on which to base their nock designs for the sizesused in greatest volume, it is necessary to establish standard-ized dimensions and tolerances for the outside diameter of thecenter servings on bow strings.5. Recommended Dimensions and Tol

、erances5.1 Center Serving DiameterAnalysis has determined thattwo sizes of center serving diameter can permit sufficientlatitude to cover appropriate bow strings for bows ranging indraw weight from 0 to 80 lb (0 to 355.8 N). This is madepossible by varying the type of material used, the number ofstr

、ands employed to form the string, and the type and diameteror size of the material used to form the center serving. Theamount of tension used to apply the center serving will affector influence the diameter of the center serving. Experience hasrevealed that it is practical to hold the tolerance on t

、he diameterto 60.004 in. (0.10 mm). Therefore, the recommended diam-eters for the center servings of bow strings with the bow stringunder 100 lb tension are as follows:5.1.1 A serving size of 0.102 6 0.004 in. (2.591 6 0.10mm) for bows under 30 lb, and is to be used for nocks withsmall throat sizes.

、5.1.2 A serving size of 0.112 6 0.004 in. (2.845 6 0.10mm) for bows ranging from 30 to 80 lb, and is to be used fornocks with large throat sizes.6.
