、 1 ANSI/BHMA A156.7 - 2016 Revision of ANSI/BHMA A156.7-2014 AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD FOR TEMPLATE HINGE DIMENSIONS Sponsor BUILDERS HARDWARE MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION, INC. AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARDS INSTITUTE Approved October 21, 2016 2 An American National Standard implies a consensus of those

、 substantially concerned with its scope and provisions. An American National Standard is intended as a guide to aid the manufacturer, the consumer, and the general public. The existence of an American National Standard does not in any respect preclude anyone, whether he has approved the standard or

、not, from manufacturing, purchasing, or using products, processes, or procedures not conforming to the standard. American National Standards are subject to periodic review and users are cautioned to obtain the latest editions. CAUTION NOTICE: This American National Standard is permitted to be revise

、d or withdrawn at any time. The procedures of the American National Standards Institute require that action be taken to reaffirm, revise, or withdraw this standard no later than five years from the date of publication. Purchasers of American National Standards receive current information on all stan

Not to be reproduced without specific authoriza

、tion from BHMA Printed in the USA This Standard was first published in 1929 by the U.S. Department of Commerce as Commercial Standard CS9-29 entitled, “Builders Template Hardware“. It was revised in 1933 and again in 1965. The 1965 version bore the title, “Builders Template Hinges“. It was revised a

、gain in 1972 under the sponsorship of the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association, Inc. At the suggestion of the Department of Commerce, the Standard was submitted to ANSI for approval which was secured under the canvass method. The 1981 revision was primarily for inclusion of SI (metric) units.

、 The 1988 edition adds two classifications of hinges, slip-in and swing clear. BHMA was accredited on 21 March 1983 by ANSI as a sponsor using the Canvass Method. 3 1. PURPOSE The purpose of this Standard is to establish nationally recognized dimensions for builders template hinges which are used on

、 metal doors and frames. This Standard is intended to assure the interchangeability of template hinges and to provide a uniform method for template identification. 2. SCOPE AND CLASSIFICATION 2.1 Scope This Standard covers the requirements for the length, width, thickness, offset, and screw hole spa

、cing for builders template hinges. Included in the standard are hinge identification symbols and screw sizes. Methods for identifying template hinges that conform to the Standard are provided. 2.2 Classification This Standard covers the following types of builders template hinges: 2.2.1 Full mortise

、 hinge A hinge designed for mortising into the butt edge of the door and into the rabbet edge of the door frame. Used generally with steel frames and steel doors. 2.2.2 Full surface hinge A hinge designed to be applied to the surface of the door and the surface of the door frame. Used generally with

、 channel iron frames and metal covered doors. 2.2.3 Half mortise hinge A hinge designed to be mortised into the butt edge of the door and applied to the surface of the door frame. Used generally with channel iron frames and steel doors. 2.2.4 Half surface hinge A hinge designed to be applied to the

、surface of the door and mortised into the rabbet edge of the door frame. Used generally with steel frames and metal covered doors. 2.2.5 Slip-in hinge A hinge designed for one or both leaves to slide into a cavity prepared in a door or door frame thus concealing one or both hinge leaves. Used genera

、lly with aluminum frames and doors. 2.2.6 Swing clear hinge A hinge designed to swing a door completely clear of the opening when the door is opened 90 to 95 degrees. It can be full mortise, full surface, half mortise or half surface. Used generally with frames and doors as described in 2.2.1 throug

、h 2.2.4 as applicable. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 General Products represented as complying with this Standard shall meet all of the requirements specified herein. 3.2 Types, Sizes, and Dimensions The types, sizes, and dimensions of the hinges covered by this standard shall be as specified in Figures 1 thr

、ough 24. The figures are for illustration only to assist in identifying the hinge types and in locating dimensions. All dimensions are in inches and millimeters. The figures do not show requirements for the design, type of bearings, or contour of the offset. The tolerances for the specified dimensio

、ns shall be as follows: 4 Dimension Tolerance inch (mm) Length +0.000 -0.015 (0.38) Screw hole spacing 0.005 (0.13) Thickness 0.005 (0.13) Width 0.015 (0.38) 3.2.1 Variable dimensions The offset dimensions and machine screw sizes are included with the template dimensions for each hinge. Hinges that

、are represented as conforming to this Standard and which comply with the template dimensions but vary in the recommended screw sizes, shall be accompanied by information clearly describing the variation. The off-sets shown herein for half surface, half mortise and all swing clear hinges may be small

、er or greater according to the individual manufacturers regular practice, provided that the widths of affected leaves are changed to conform with any increase or decrease in offset. The template dimensions shall not be affected by such modifications. 3.2.2 Template identification symbols The first l

、etter of the symbol indicates the thickness: A = Standard weight and B = heavy weight. The next two digits indicate the vertical height of hinge; for example, 20 = 2 inch (50.8 mm), 25 = 2 1/2 inch (63.5 mm), 30 = 3 inch (76.2mm), 35 = 3 1/2 inch (88.9 mm), etc. The last letter(s), indicate(s) the t

、ype of hinge: M = full mortise, H = half surface, HM = half mortise and S = full surface, SMA = slip-in with one leaf in cavity (normally jamb leaf), SMB = slip-in with both leaves in cavities, the suffix S added to M, H, HM or S = swing clear in full mortise half surface, etc. Thus A45MS indicates

、a standard weight full mortise swing clear hinge in 4 1/2 in (114.3 mm) size. 3.3 Full Mortise Hinges The leaves of full mortise template hinges shall have straight edges and square or radius corners. Each leaf shall be shaped so that the leaves shall be parallel when the hinge is opened 1/16 inch,

、+ .015 inch (1.59 mm + 0.38 mm). 3.4 Half Surface, Full Surface and Half Mortise Hinges The surface leaves of full surface, half surface and half mortise hinges shall have beveled edges. The mortise leaves of half mortise and half surface hinges shall have straight edges and square or radius corners
