Scope*1.1 This specification covers the identification of polyeth-ylene plastic pipe and fittings materials in accordance with acell classifi

It is not the function of this specifi-cation to provide specific engineering data for design purposes,to specify manufacturing tolerances, or to determine suitabilityfor use for a specific application.1.2 Polyethylene plastic materials, being thermoplastic, arereprocessable and recyc

16、ogy3.1 DefinitionsTerms as described in Terminology D883shall apply in this specification.3.1.1 polyethylene plasticsas defined by this specification,plastics or resins prepared by the polymerization of no less than85 % ethylene and no less than 95 % of total olefins withadditional compounding ingre

17、dients.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 materialspolyethylene (PE) resins with the addedcompounding ingredients.3.2.2 PE compoundshas the same meaning as PE plasticsmaterials, compounds, and plastics.3.3 Historical usage and user group conventions have re-sulted in inconsiste

18、nt terminology used to categorize anddescribe polyethylene resins and compounds. The followingterminology is in use in ASTM specifications pertaining topolyethylene:3.3.1 Specification D1248:3.3.1.1 Type (0, I, II, III, IV) = density ranges (same,respectively, as Class in Specification D4976).3.3.1.

19、2 Class (A, B, C, D) = composition and use.3.3.1.3 Category (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) = melt index ranges (same asGrade in Specification D4976).3.3.1.4 Grade (E, J, D, or W followed by one or two digits)= specific requirements from tables.3.3.2 Specification D3350:3.3.2.1 Type (I, II, III) = density ranges (s

30、ies. Theinformation from the format is to be used alone or incombination.NOTE 6This type format, however, is subject to possible misapplica-tion since unobtainable property combinations can be selected if the useris not familiar with commercially available materials. The manufacturershould be consul

31、ted. Additionally, the appropriate ASTM standard speci-fication should be reviewed to assure materials utilized will meet all thematerial and piping requirements as specified in the standard.4.3 GradeA code for polyethylene pipe and fittings ma-terials that consists of the two letter abbreviation fo

32、r polyeth-ylene (PE) followed by two numbers that designate the densitycell (Property 1) and the slow crack growth resistance cell(Property 5), as defined by either Test Method F1473 or TestMethod D1693, of the thermoplastic, as specified in Table 1.For the requirements of Property 5 (slow crack gro

33、wth resis-tance), consult the materials section of the appropriate ASTMstandard specification for the end-use application.NOTE 7Grade designations were adapted from SpecificationD1248 - 84 prior to the removal of pipe material from D1248 - 84. FormerSpecification D1248 - 84 grades for PE pipe materi

34、als were P14, P23,P24, P33, and P34. Equivalent Specification D3350 grade designations forthese materials are PE11, PE20, PE23, PE30, and PE33, respectively.5. Materials and Manufacture5.1 The molding and extrusion material shall be polyethyl-ene plastic in the form of powder, granules, or pellets.5

35、.2 The molding and extrusion materials shall be as uniformin composition and size and as free of contamination as isachieved by good manufacturing practice. If necessary, thelevel of contamination may be agreed upon between themanufacturer and the purchaser.5.3 When specified, the color and transluc

36、ence of molded orextruded pieces formed, under the conditions specified by themanufacturer of the materials, shall be comparable withincommercial match tolerances to the color and translucence ofstandard samples supplied in advance by the manufacturer ofthe material.6. Physical Properties6.1 Cell Cl

37、assificationTest values for specimens of the PEmaterial prepared as specified in Section 9 and tested inaccordance with Section 10 shall conform to the requirementsgiven in Table 1. A typical property value for a PE material isto be the average value from testing numerous lots or batchesand determin

38、es the cell number. When, due to manufacturingtolerances and testing bias, individual lot or batch values fallinto the adjoining cell, the individual value shall not beconsidered acceptable unless the user, or both the user and theproducer, determine that the individual lot or batch is suitablefor i

39、ts intended purpose.6.2 Color and Ultraviolet (UV) StabilizerThe color andUV stabilization shall be indicated at the end of the cellclassification by means of a letter designation in accordancewith the following code:Code Letter Color and UV StabilizerA NaturalB ColoredC Black with 2 % minimum carbo

40、n blackD Natural with UV stabilizerE Colored with UV stabilizer6.3 Thermal StabilityThe PE material shall contain suffi-cient antioxidant so that the minimum induction temperatureshall be 220C when tested in accordance with 10.1.9.6.4 Brittleness TemperatureThe brittleness temperatureshall not be wa

41、rmer than 60C when tested in accordancewith Test Method D746.6.5 DensityThe density used to classify the material shallbe the density of the PE base resin (uncolored PE) determinedin accordance with 10.1.3. When the average density of any lotor shipment falls within 60.002 g/cm3of the nominal value,

42、 itshall be considered as conforming to the nominal value and toall classifications based on the nominal value.6.5.1 For black compounds, containing carbon black, deter-mine the density, Dp, and calculate the resin density, Dr,asfollows:Dr5Dp20.0044Cwhere:C = weight percent of carbon black.6.5.2 For

43、 colored compounds, the nominal density of thebase resin shall be provided by the manufacturer, on request.6.6 Tensile Strength at YieldThe tensile strength at yieldused to classify the material shall be the tensile strength at yieldof the PE resin determined in accordance with 10.1.6. Whenthe avera

44、ge tensile strength at yield of any lot or shipment fallswithin 63.45 MPa (6500 psi) of the nominal value, it shall beconsidered as conforming to the nominal value and to allclassifications based on the nominal value.6.7 Elongation at BreakAs tested in accordance with10.1.6, all pressure rated mater

45、ials shall have a minimumextension at break of 400 %.7. Sampling7.1 A batch or lot shall be considered as a unit of manufac-ture and shall consist of one production run or as a blend of twoor more production runs of material.D3350 10a37.2 Unless otherwise agreed upon between the manufacturerand the

46、purchaser, the material shall be sampled in accordancewith the procedure described in Sections 9 through 12 ofPractice D1898. Adequate statistical sampling prior to packag-ing shall be considered an acceptable alternative.NOTE 8A sample taken from finished product may not necessarilyrepresent the or

47、iginal batch or lot.8. Number of Tests8.1 The requirements identified by the material designationand otherwise specified in the purchase order shall be verifiedby tests made in accordance with 11.1. For routine inspection,only those tests necessary to identify the material to thesatisfaction of the

48、purchaser shall be required. One sampleshall be sufficient for testing each batch or lot provided that theaverage values for all of the tests made on that batch or lotcomply with the specified requirements.9. Specimen Preparation9.1 Unless otherwise specified in Section 10, the test speci-mens shall

49、 be molded in accordance with Procedure C ofAnnex A1 of Practice D4703.9.2 When pipe or fitting test specimens are required, theyshall be extruded or molded in accordance with the specifica-tions of the material manufacturer.10. Test Methods10.1 The properties enumerated in this specification shall bedetermined in accordance with the following test methods:10.1.1 ConditioningUnless otherwise specified in the testmethods or in this specification, for those tests where condi-tioning is required, condition the molded test specimens inaccordance wit
