12、NTS * 3.1 First Article approval. If First Article approval is required (see 6.2.1 and 6.3), inspection therefor shall be in accordance with Section 4. A First Article comprises a preproduction model or initial production sample; approval involves testing and evaluating the First Article for conform
13、ance with the requirements herein before, or in the initial stage of, production under a contract. The approved sample shall be used as the standard for all production items manufactured to fulfill the terms of the contract. * 3.2 Design. The welding machine shall be a completely assembled and en- c
14、losed, direct current, transformer-rectifier, constant current, resistor controlled type for single operator use from three phase power. welding machine shall be designed and.built to withstand the rough treat- ment encountered around construction work. Exceptions and additional requirements for safety and health shall be as specified (see 6.2.1 and 6.4). 3.2.3 Lubrication. All bearings (except sealed-for-life) and other working parts requiring lubrication shall be provid

To provide for replacement of worn parts, all parts shall be manufactured to definite di
21、mensions and tolerances .which will permit installation of replacement parts without modifica- tion of part or machine. * 3.2.5 Materials. Materials shall be as specified herein. Materials not specified herein shall be selected by the manufacturer to meet the requirements of this specification. Only
22、 new materials shall be used, Contact between dissimilar metals, especially brass, -copper, or steel in contact with aluminum or magnesium shall be avoided whenever possible, Materials shall be free of all defects and imperfections that might affect the serviceability and appearance of the- finished
23、 product. * 3.2.6 Portability. The welding machines shall be portable and shall be base mounted. Running gear, if required (see 6.2.1), shall be specified by procuring activity. The welding machines shall be provided with lugs or lifting eyes or other suitable means for handling by crane or hoist. E
24、ach eye or lug when mounted on the machine shall be capable of support- ing two and one-half times the weight of the machine. The welding machines shall also be designed to be lifted by forklift truck. 3.3 Construction. The welding machines shall be constructed so that when installed and connected t
25、o the specified power source, they can be used for any purpose for which they were designed. The welding machines shall be constructed of parts which are sound in structure and free from any repair. 3.3.1 Castings and forginps. All castings and forgings shall be free from defects, scale, and mismatc
26、hing. In no event shall such processes as welding, peening, plugging, or filling with solder or metallic paste be used on castings or forgings to reclaim any defective parts for use on the machines. 3.3.2 Welding, brazing, and soldering. Welding, brazing, or soldering shall be employed only where th
27、ose operations are required in the origi- nal design. These operations shall not be employed as repair measures for defective parts, 3.3.3 Fas tening devices. All screws , pins, bolts, and similar parts shall be installed with means for preventing loss of tightness. Such parts subject to removal or
28、adjustment shall not be swaged, peened, staked, or otherwise permanently deformed. 3.3.4 Surfaces. All surfaces of castings , forgings, molded parts, stamping, and welding parts shall be cleaned and free from sand, dirt, fins, sprues, scale, flux, and other harmful or extraneous materials. External

30、ng. Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2.1), the welding machines shall be painted in accordance with the manufacturers stan- dard coimercial practice. * 3.3.6 Threads. All threaded parts shall conform to Handbook H28. * 3.3.7 Gears, All gears used in the machine and its components shall conform to t
31、he applicable requirements of AGMA 360. * 3.3.8 Weight and dimensions. The weight of the welding machines shall not exceed 400 pounds (181.6 kg) each. The dimensions of the welding machines shall not exceed 24 x 20 x 32 inches (60.9 x 50.8 x 81.2 cm) in height, width, and depth for Type I welding ma
32、chines; and 32 x 30 x 45 inches (81.2 x 76.2 x 114.3 cm) (HWD) for Type II welding machines. * 3.4 Performance. The welding machines shall have arc stability charac- teristics which will enable an operator to maintain a stable arc and produce sound welds when current is qdjusted within the welding r
33、ange of the machine. The open circuit voltage shall be in accordance with NEMA EW-1. The welding machines shall have a power factor of 90% or better. The time delay response of the welding machine shall be in- stantaneous and linear to high current values. Type II welding machines in addition to the
34、 above shall have gas, water and high frequency controls to initiate the gas flow prior to establishing the arc; to control time delay cutoff of gas following breaking of the arc; and to superimpose high frequency for starting the arc or for continuous use. The welding power range of the welding mac
35、hines shall be from not more than 5 amperes (at 20 load volts) to not less than 200 amperes (at 25 load volts) for 200 size; 300 amperes (at 32 load volts) for 300 size; and 400 (at 36 load volts) for 400 size. * 3.4.1 WeldinP current adjustment. The welding current shall be adjust- able from minimu
36、m welding current to maximum current in one ampere increments. Current adj,ustments for Type II welding machines shall be operated by reversible motors. 3.4.2 Temperature rise. The maximum allowable temperature rise of various parts of the machine for tha given class of insulation used shall be in a
37、ccordance with NEMA EM-1. 4 * 3.5 Components. The enclosure shall be designed and constructed to prevent liquid or solid particles, falling on the enclosure at angles up to 1
39、5 degrees from the vertical, from interfering with the satisfactory operation of the equipment. The enclosure shall have panels or removable sections to furnish access to all internal parts.
