30、snotpossibletoguaranteethatawastewatertreatmentplantwillbetotallyodour free.Awelldesignedplantminimisesthepotentialforodourproblems. Thepotentialforodourgenerationshallbeconsideredattheearlieststagesinthedesignofwastewatertreatment works.Thelikelihoodofodouremission,itsimpactandeaseoftreatmentshallb
31、econsideredinallaspectsof design,especially: a) Minimisethesepticityoftherawwastewaterbyconsideringtheseweragesystem. b) Processselectione.g.ifsepticwastewaterisanticipated,possibilitiestominimiseodourareforexample: minimisetheretentiontimeofthesludgeintheprimarysettlementtank; havingnoprimarysettle
32、ment(thusavoidingamajorsourceofodour)andapplyingextendedaeration; selectacoveredprocess. c) Bylocatingthemajorsourcesofodour,whereverpossible,awayfromthemostsensitivelocationssurrounding theplant.Forplanningthedirectionandspeedofwindslocaltotheinstallationshallbetakenintoaccount. NOTESituationswithl
33、ightwindornowindandstableatmosphericconditionsaremostunfavourableforthedispersionof odours.Thus,ifthesesituationshappenveryoften,thenthelocalwinddirectionduringthesesituationsisrelevantinstead of thegenerallyprevailingwinddirection. d) Byconsideringthelocationofunitprocessesrelativetoeachotheritmayb
34、epossibletouseasingleabate mentprocesstotreatmorethanonesourceofodourortousetheodorousairfromoneprocessasprocessor combustionairinanadjacentprocess.Anydecisiontotreatodorousairwillrequireaprocesstobecovered andventilatedwiththeventedairductedtotreatment.Covering,ventingandtreatmentshallbedesignedas
35、anintegratedpackage. Wheretreatmentplantsarenotcoveredorhousedinbuildingsandtheeffectofodourisdifficulttoquantifypriorto commissioningdesignsshouldallowforcoveringand/orventilationatalaterdate. Whentanksorprocessesarecoveredcarefulconsiderationisrequiredof: a)explosion risk; b) corrosionprevention;
36、c) healthandsafetyofoperators;EN122559:2002(E) 7 d)access for maintenance. 4.2 Sourcesandnatureofodours Odourisgeneratedduringtheconveyanceandtreatmentofwastewaterduetothedegradationoforganicmatter bymicroorganismsunderanaerobicconditions.Industrialwastewatercanalsocontaincharacteristicodorous const
37、ituents.Theonsetofsepticitycanbeacceleratedbyelevatedtemperatures,highBODconcentrationand presenceofreducingchemicals.Therangeofodorousconstituentsisverywideandincludes: hydrogen sulphide; ammonia; organicsulphurcompounds; thiols(e.g.mercaptans); amines; indole and skatole; volatilefattyacids; other
38、organiccompounds. Theconditionsthatgiverisetoodoursoccurmosttypicallyin: unfavourableconditionsinthesewagesystems(e.g.longretentiontimes,poormaintenance,industrial discharges); longpressuremains; somehighratetreatmentprocesses; anaerobic lagoons; sludgestorageandtreatmentprocesses. Odourscanbepresen
39、torforminthesewersystemorinthetreatmentplant.Onceformed,odourstendtotravel withtheflowthroughthetreatmentprocesstobetransferredtotheatmosphereatpointsofturbulenceorwhere thereisalargeairwaterinterface.Levelsofodourcanbeincreasedbytherecyclingofliquorswithinatreatment process,particularlywhenrecyclin
40、gthoseproducedbythethickeningordewateringofsludge. NOTE EN7524givesguidanceonminimisingsepticityindrainandsewersystems.
