SCOPE The material defined by this specification is gray cast iron poured into permanent (cast iron) molds to produce castings with good machinability and high strength at m
、oderate hardness level. 2. APPLICAION This material was released originally for material used to make automotive engine water pump pulley hubs. 3. REQUIREMENTS Material specification requirements are to be used for initial qualification of materials. 3.0 STANDARD REQUIREMENTS FOR PRODUCTION MATERIAL
、S Material suppliers and part producers must conform to the Companys Standard Requirements For Production Materials (WSS-M99P1111-A). 3.2 CHEMICAL COMPOSMON (TYPICAL) Total Carbon 3.45 - 3.65 Silicon 2.45 - 2.65 Manganese 0.60 - 1.00 Phosphorus 0.35 max Sulfur 0.15 max Iron Balance 3.3 HEAT TREATMEN
、T All part and test bar castings shall be cast in permanent (cast iron) molds and shall be normalized at approximately 1650 F (900 C) in a continuous furnace and light air blow cooled. The following microstructure has been found most suitable. The indicated microstructure is not to be used as a basis for
、 rejection; however, it can be used to support functional rejection. The matrix structure of permanent mold gray cast iron parts in the normalized condition shall be predominantly ferrite, with 5% minimum pearlite, no massive cementite and free of abnormal segregation. The graphite per ASTM A 247 sh
、all be evenly distributed and shall be present in the form of predominantly interdendritic random orientation Type D flake - Size 6 to 8 at the as-cast surface. Graphite may have diminishing amounts of Type D and up to 100% random orientation Type A - Size 4 to 6 at the casting center and at machined surfaces.
