、 to 0.55% carbon, 0.60% min manganese, 0.04% max phosphorus, 0.05% max sulfur), induction or flame hardened on the ball surface. 4.2 Hardness The ball surface (spherical diameter) shall have a minimum superficial Rockwell hardness of 88 HR15N (or 55 HRC min when converted). The center 1/3 of the bal

、l diameter shall not exceed 35 HRC. 4.2.1 The remainder of the ball stud (neck, taper, flange, and threaded or riveted length) shall have a surface hardness of 22-35 HRC. Prior to induction or flame hardening, this hardness shall be obtained by quenching and tempering at 425C (800 F) min. This hardn

、ess range shall extend from the minor diameter of the neck to at least 3 mm (1/8 in) on the ball side (measured in a direction perpendicular to the stud axis), to a maximum of 6 mm (1/4 in). See Figure 1 below. Figure 1 - Typical Hardening Pattern NOTE: Hardness on Surface A is optional. 4.2.2 For b

、all studs with a neck diameter of 22 mm (7/8 in) or larger, the hardening pattern may extend to the start of the taper or flange. If hardened in this manner, the pattern shall extend past the minor diameter of the neck by at least 6 mm (1/4 in). The surface hardness of the neck shall not exceed 62 H

、RC. 4.3 Case Depth The effective case depth (i.e., to 50 HRC) on the finished ball surface shall be 0.25 mm (0.010 in) min whether obtained by carburizing, carbonitriding, or flame or induction hardening. 4.3.1 A case is not desired on the remainder of the ball stud as defined above. However, a case

、 is permitted on the non-spherical portion providing it is tempered so that it meets the bend test requirements herein and the hardness requirements previously specified. In the case of riveted studs, the riveted end is to be tempered at 650C (1200F) min to permit peening of the end. 4.4 Finish Stud
